View Full Version : Scariest New Restaurant Foods
I came across this this morning and wasn't sure to post it here or in gourmet guerilla. While some of these dishes sound extremely interesting and somewhat appetizing (and boy do I love to eat LOL) I cannot help but wonder 'WHAT THE HELL ARE PEOPLE THINKING?". We are constantly inundated with news reports about the "expanding American waistline" and instead of coming up with yummy and HEALTHY foods, they come up with crap like this! I felt a heart attack coming on just reading the nutrition (un) value on these items.

Just went to the Kentucky State Fair this past friday.
The average weight for the lines was too great for me. ;)
Krispy Kreme introduced their new 'Donut Burger'.
Guess the fried Snickers, Oreos, and Reese's wasn't enough. But then again, I was at the Kentucky State Fair....

"Look-out McGriddle, it's the Donut Ham Hamburger!" I just knew somebody was going to see Gaffigan's act and think "hey, that's a great idea!"...
I love Jim Gaffigan. I'm practically in tears listening to him on XM.
"Pie can’t compete with cake. Put candles in a cake, it’s a birthday cake. Put candles in a pie, and somebody’s drunk in the kitchen."
I love capitalism!
As do I.
The market works. If the new food is a hit it will stick around. If not it will disappear.
Every food place is looking for a "hook" to get you in the door.
As to the top five - 5 through 2 didn't seem to interest me. 1 could - maybe.

They had me at "cheese stuffed meat". :D

My friend, I must disagree with you on this article. It says:
"There’s an arms race going on, and it could mean disaster for your waistline.
But this terrifying competition to build the biggest, scariest weapons of mass destruction isn’t happening between the United States and Russia, or on the Korean peninsula, or among angry rivals somewhere in the Middle East. It’s happening between America’s restaurants—every one of them, it seems, is eager to show it has the biggest, scariest, most destructive new food in the marketplace. And the unsuspecting victims of this Strangelovian contest? You and me."
The words I italicized are written to evoke panic, and are highly inflamatory, IMHO.
Restaurants are in the business of making money, and that is a good thing!;)
Personal responsibility is knowing what to eat, and when to stop etc... It is not the restaurants fault that some people do not have any, but personally, I do not want ANYONE telling me what ingreidents I can or cannot prepare and serve, and I sure as hell do not want ANYONE telling me what I can or cannot eat!:munchin
If I feel in the mood for a supersize Bratwurst, thats battered and deepfried with chili cheese fries, then bring it on and bring me a shovel! (hehehe):o

I see a lot of people in "Rascals", etc. on my way to work daily. I also see a lot of young people. The movie "Wall-e" may have been prescient about what our future holds, at least in some respects.

Hehehe...I LOVE Brats! And the ones recently grilled at my AO by an SF man rose to the occasion on the grill, and were perfectly grilled! They were so juicy and flavorful in my mouth, it was heaven!
ZD, and here is an after photo to prove said delicious-ness!:lifter See, you really can enjoy good food, and not be unhealthy for it!!! hahaha

A big part of the issue is the total calorie count. The solution is simplicity itself - divide by two (or more). Either share the entrée, or take part home.
Just because a restaurant turns out a mega-burger, one is not obligated to eat the whole thing by oneself at one sitting.
Unless, of course, one adds enough ketchup to lubricate it properly... :D
The attached image is: CLEARFIELD, Pa. -- People from New York and Ohio come to Denny's Beer Barrel Pub for a pretty big hamburger: 6 pounds of beef, one large onion, two whole tomatoes, a half a head of lettuce, 1 1/4 pounds of cheese, top and bottom buns, and a cup each of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, banana peppers and some pickles.

To quote Fonzy (from "Happy Days", not here at PS.com), "Exactamundo!"
One finds, as one ages, that eating what you used to eat without consequence no longer applies. So... one must exercise more, or eat less. (As a radio personality said this morning, "There is NO amount of time on a treadmill that can burn up the calories of an "Awesome Blossom" from "Outback Steakhouse"!" (While not technically correct, it would still be difficult.)
I use the nmap approach. I get the "doggie bag" at the beginning of the meal and put half or more away. (At "Claimjumper" - 2/3!!) Make two, or three, meals of it. (Of course, I am also famous for leaving said "doggie bag" at the table upon departure!)
It is a person's personal responsibility - not up to your "government nanny" to decide. However, I do appreciate magazines pointing such things out, so I can be better informed to make my own decisions.

And I thought they called you Big Teddy cuz you LOVE teddybears and you are as cuddly as one!!! hehehe :D
As the ladies would say, "a moment on your lips, forever on your hips". I will admit, I have ZERO self-control when it comes to food. I love to eat. I have struggled with my weight most of my life. It is not easy when you have restaurants creating these monstrosities or when portions get bigger and bigger. I can't order from the kids menu, the restaurants don't allow it and when I don't finish everything on my plate I get a server who, with a pouty look, condescendingly says "aaw, whats wrong, didn't you like it? You didn't finish your meal. NO dessert for you!" Makes me wanna commit very unChristian-like acts!!!
I am NOT infavor of Big Daddy Govt telling us what we can and cannot eat, the salt issue was one thing that got me going. The responsibility lies solely on us, as consumers, to show some restraint. But I find that a lot of menus are limited when it comes to eating healthy BUT tasty food. I'm just sayn!

Those "burgers" highlight what, for me, is the main problem with Krispy Kreme doughnuts... they are too damned little! :)
I am seriously getting agida looking at those KK burgers. Wow...yeah, not so much. I like that whole sweet and salty taste but not in a burger or a donut.

MY favorite burgers are at "In 'n Out" - a CA chain. They didn't open one in AZ until around '94, and it was waaaaay far from me up in Snottsdale. However, it was right next to a brand new Krispy Kreme... so it was worth the trip. Go for a late breakfast and an early lunch.
Of course, being cheap, I'd wait until there was a long line at Krispy Kreme, and then stand it in. They'd bring around sample doughnuts for you while you waited. When I got near the front, I'd just move to the back. I'd eat 6 or 7 doughnuts (they are little!! that way. When I finally got to the register, I'd just order a small milk. :D

S--- My friend, sweet and savory DO actually meet well together, in some Culinary masterpieces! But, in this case, I think it is every man for himself!
Worth trying a bite of though...., after all, what is wrong with only, "one bite?" hehehehe

It is a combination birthed in heaven... Syrup on everything, plus the right hot sauce on the chicken, and HOT DAMN, it's gonna be a good day! Works best with wings.

It's just...bizarre. I like sweet/salty combos but that seems odd. Then again I like an over easy fried egg on toast with smear of peanut butter, so to each their own. :D

Now I do have to agree that NO ONE is going to tell me what I can or cannot eat. It is up to the individual to decide what they are going to eat. All of you are also right. Americans are on the obese side, and I do not see us getting any better. I have learned that with a proper and regimented eating pattern (notice I did not use the word “Diet”), exercise, and proper sleep you will see the waist line get smaller. Do not be so concerned with the number on the weight scale. Be more concerned with the waist line. Remember the muscle weighs more that fat. No I am not a nutritionist, but I have been around the block a few times. I have seen those who use this technique and have seen it work. I myself use it and I have lost a good 20 lbs. Now, I am only 5’ 8” and was a189lbs. I now flux between 160-165lbs. So check it out and see where the foods and exercise come into play.
That list above is why I don't eat out much. When I do...which is very rare...then all bets are off. :D

Well,
The only thing I can say is, Men's Health had a reason for putting this list together, and I guarantee none of the CHAIN/Fast Food establishments listed are Advertisers in the mag!;)
Sex, drugs, and anything that scares the beejesus out of you, sells, IMHO!
But take heart, for all of those folks who choose to dine only at the above mentioned places, there are many, many others who prefer REAL food, cooked to order, at local tables worldwide...hence the need/demand for quality cooks and Chefs who prepare, and execute incredible arraangements of ingredients, into works of art for the palate.
JMHO,:)

TS, Sir,
Speaking of Scariest Restaurant Foods...am in a class right now that deals with, "Food Safety," and OMG:eek:
Today we saw a video of a Slaughterhouse...Needless to say, think twice about that next Steak ingested from a restaurant!
I am going to ask up-front now when I dine out, "Who is the supplier!"
And that doesn't even sniff the surface of the fast-food elements of the video!
Be afraid, mi amigos, be afraid of where you eat fast food!:munchin

All this does not take into account the sodium levels in restaurant food especially chains.
Scary and has put me off eating at most chains anymore. In fact, there are very few restaurants I'm willing to eat at because as I've reduced the sodium level in my home diet, I've become more sensitive to tasting it in food and it can be overwhelming.

Pete Sir,
I love what salt does naturally to food...it enhances the flaor of food!:)
It is all about portion size, and control of what is ingested, IMHO. Yes! You can still have that steak and baked potato with salt, just eat in moderation, have some exercise, and pile on the gray/sauce if you want!:lifter
In really fine cooking, real salt, real butter, real eggs, real meat, are used. It is how much a person comsumes that turnes it into a problem, IMHO.:o
