A 2008 video produced by an ABC News hidden camera team, called "How Muslims Are Treated in America." Setting aside concerns about the morality of such "hidden camera" journalism, which some critics say tricks and emotionally manipulates innocent people, it provides a brief window into American attitudes towards Islam.

An interesting 7 minute video.

And so it goes...

I loved the military dads response @ 03:10 - 03:45. I’d like to think I would have done the same thing, and afterwords, invite her to sit down and talk about Islam. I love picking peoples brains.
I had a discussion with a female from Saudi a while back who jumped at the chance to discuss her beliefs with a non-Muslim, it was an interesting learning experience…

It might also be illuminating to see the results if Mr. Quiñones used the same methods (hidden camera) in sections of Dearborn, Michigan.

IIRC we had a lively thread in 2009 about "controversial" filming at an Arab Festival.

MOO, I suspect that no "group" has a monopoly on prejudice ....but we'll never see that video from Mr. Quiñones.

[H]ere’s some clarifying info from the FBI. According to the latest hate crime statistics available, there were 1,606 hate crime offenses motivated by religious bias in 2008. A closer look: 65.7 percent of them were committed against Jews. Against Muslims? 7.7 percent.I wonder what would the percentage be if you were to reverse the question: "How Americans are treated in country XYZ" or "How Christians are treated in country XYZ?"

Stay safe.

A recent article about hate crimes against Muslims and commentary from Robert Spencer. I haven't seen much reporting in the MSM about these 'fake' hate crimes that Mr. Spencer references.

FBI: Hate crimes against Muslims rare

This is why they have to fabricate them. Remember: the thuggish Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has actually trumpeted fake anti-Muslim hate crimes in the past, in order to use them to score political points. They did this again just weeks ago in Georgia.

CAIR, an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas funding case, has claimed that "anti-Muslim hate crimes" have risen sharply in the U.S. since 9/11. In fact, the rate of such crimes has actually dropped. CAIR knows well that victimhood is big business: insofar as they can claim protected victim status for Muslims in the U.S., they can deflect unwanted scrutiny and any critical examination of how jihadists use Islamic texts and teachings to justify violence and supremacism.

That's most likely why CAIR and others have not hesitated to stoop even to fabricating "hate crimes." They want and need hate crimes against Muslims, because they can use them as weapons to intimidate people into remaining silent about the jihad threat.

"FBI data: Hate crimes against Muslims rare," by Michael Doyle in the Sacramento Bee, August 28 (thanks to Pamela Geller):

WASHINGTON -- Hate crimes directed against Muslims remain relatively rare, notwithstanding the notoriety gained by incidents such as recent vandalism at the Madera Islamic Center.

Jews, lesbians, gay men and Caucasians, among others, are all more frequently the target of hate crimes, FBI records show. Reported anti-Muslim crimes have declined over recent years, though they still exceed what occurred prior to the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

"We see hate crimes generally go in spurts, and are often in relation to international or domestic events," Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said Friday.

In 2008, 105 hate crime incidents against Muslims were reported nationwide. There were 10 times as many incidents that were recorded as anti-Jewish during the same year, the most recent for which figures are available.

The number of anti-Muslim hate crimes leaped to a record 481 in 2001, apparently prompted by the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. It hasn't been nearly that high since....

When a group identifies itself with some specific label - Muslim, in this instance - then the members can hardly be surprised when the behavior of all individuals under this label is aggregated in the minds of others. Thus, Muslim behavior anywhere will, IMO, tend to influence attitudes toward them.

LINK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFBsVbwBgLU&feature=related)

The link deals with the execution - without trial, apparently - of two women in Afghanistan by the Taliban. I could easily come up with a wealth of links, as could others. This begs the question - what's the difference between Muslims who pulled the trigger and those in the U.S.?

I have mentioned this question before. Although it is rhetorical in this instance, the problem is real. Until one can easily differentiate between an "Islamic fanatic" and an "Islamic not-fanatic", then those who adopt that label surely cannot be surprised when they are all lumped together.

As for how to treat Muslims, I suppose it would be wrong to suggest hydrogen peroxide. :D

Honor killing, teenage girl.

After the video came out, officials were shocked (shocked, I tells ya!), and have arrested several. But note well - the numerous individuals in the area did nothing to stop the attack, did nothing to report the attack, and did not show any sign of disapproval.

Islamic fanatics? Maybe. I still don't know how to spot the difference between those who approve of such things and those who do not.

Those I have met have not made much effort to set themselves apart from the radicals. To the man, what I have heard is excuses, not condemnation. Which doesn't garner my trust.

...wouldn't that be a better question?

Intolerance part of the lesson: Iraqi boy wonders whether he will have to kill his Christian friend one day

A lot of people in the west are putting a large stake in 'Islam means peace'. But the reality of the new Iraqi school curriculum flies in the face of this. It might be difficult for many to cover this story ~ because they have convinced themselves ~ that Islam actually does mean peace ~ when submission by any means would be a better fit. Anti-Islamic, not anti-Islamic what does it matter ~ people just want to live ~ and to do so within a measure of freedom.

"each Muslim had a duty to carry out jihad - namely to fight unbelievers." She identified unbelievers as those who did not follow Allah or the Prophet Mohammed.

Some students appear to be learning the lessons well.

Sajjad Kiayyad, 7, of Baghdad, said he plans to become a holy warrior when he grows up. "I will fight the Americans because they are Jewish and unbelievers," he said. "I will be victorious, or I will be a martyr in heaven."

~

Zuhair Jerjis and Ahmed Mohammed are both 10. They attend the same Baghdad school and often ride home together. After school, the two get together and play video games.

But Ahmed is worried. He wonders if some day he will have to murder his best friend.

The boys go to the same school and share a ride home to the same district of Baghdad, but their parents do not share the same faith.

Zuhair's family is Christian and Ahmed's is Muslim. Recent religious lessons at school have left Ahmed questioning what end awaits his friendship.

"Our teacher tells us it is forbidden in Islam to make friends with unbelievers," he said. "When I study that we have to fight the unbelievers in the name of jihad, I think, 'Will I kill Zuhair one day?'"

Ahmed's family in Muslim; Zuhair's is Christian. And it turns out that in Iraq's schools today, religious tolerance is not part of the curriculum.

Religious education is a regular feature of public schools in Iraq. Because Zuhair is a Christian, he is not required to attend religious classes. But because the vast majority of his classmates are Muslims, Zuhair said he often feels alone and isolated.

"When all of my friends are in the class, I have to stand outside," he said.

As students prepare to return to classes this fall, there is growing criticism of the recently introduced curriculum, which critics say fails to tackle the causes of religious and sectarian hatred that have fueled the violence of the last six years. Worse still, they accuse it of laying the foundations for future strife.

The main concerns about the school program are that it favors the Shia interpretation of Islam. In addition, many are concerned that some teachers focus on subjects not directly addressed in the curriculum, such as the treatment of non-Muslims and jihad, or holy war.

Before the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003, religious education reflected the beliefs of the minority Sunni population, which makes up roughly one-quarter of the current population.

The current curriculum places more emphasis on Shia Islam, a sect followed by the majority of Iraq's Arabs and by its most powerful politicians, including Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Muhsin al-Freji, an adviser to the education minister, insists that the curriculum - first introduced in 2006 - has attempted to represent all Iraqis.

"We did our best to update the curriculum so it expressed the views of all Iraqis," he said. "A few changes were made, and more are on the way." But Sunni Arab politicians have been vocal in their criticism of the changes.

Alaa Makki, a Sunni member of parliament and head of a parliamentary committee on education, said the new curriculum was unbalanced.

"The current changes have a huge sectarian impact," he said. "The updating process should focus on the shared aspects (of Islam), not on a specific sect." Some of the areas of dispute are subtle and reflect the centuries-old schism within Islam.

For example, Iraq's former Sunni-accented textbooks followed all mentions of the Prophet with a traditional Sunni blessing, "Peace be upon him." In the new textbooks, the blessing is a typical Shia one, "Peace be upon him and his family." In addition, anecdotal evidence from schools suggests many teachers offer their own views on such topics as the treatment of non-Muslims or the obligation to wage jihad.

Sanaa Muhsin, an Islamic studies teacher in Baghdad's Shaab district, said she regularly instructs her students that "each Muslim had a duty to carry out jihad - namely to fight unbelievers." She identified unbelievers as those who did not follow Allah or the Prophet Mohammed.

Back to the video -

I went to the FBI web-site to read the report cited. I would think we've all been in situations where we've experienced treatment similar to that seen in the video (for whatever reason), and understand that there is quite a bit of difference between such an awkwardly frustrating experience and the severity of the treament which would probably lead to a reportable national stat for a 'hate crime.' I would suspect that across the board amongst all elements of American culture, such behavior is - if anything - an under-reported occurrance and any 'official' stats lag years behind such activities being monitored, investigated, and reported.

To me, the report is interesting in that, although such reported crimes are up towards some groups, the same historical scapegoats appear to remain the most targeted groups overall and the misperceptions (or misrepresentations) of such behaviors are common to all levels of American culture.

Sometimes, it certainly seems as if the old adage of the more things change, the less they change still holds true.

And so it goes...

 I didn't see anybody wearing a mask in the video.

Based on what I've seen and experienced, I thought the video gave a fairly accurate idea of what is probably a typical encounter today - 1/6 supported the clerk's behavior, 2/6 supported the girl, and 3/6 said nothing.

The location where the program was filmed lies along the East of I-35 about 1/2 way between Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin in the town of West, TX. I've passed by the place many times while driving to San Marcos and back to visit my sons at Texas State University.

By Nonie Darwish

Imam Feisal Abdel Rauf <leader of the Ground Zero Mosque movement> claims that the U.S. Constitution is Sharia compliant. Now let us examine below a few laws of Sharia to see if Imam Rauf is truthful or a fraud:

1 - Jihad defined as “to war against non-Muslims to establish the religion” is the duty of every Muslim and Muslim head of state (Caliph). Muslim Caliphs who refuse jihad are in violation of Sharia and unfit to rule.

2 - A Caliph can hold office through seizure of power meaning through force.

3 - A Caliph is exempt from being charged with serious crimes such as murder, adultery, robbery, theft, drinking and in some cases of rape.

4 - A percentage of Zakat (alms) must go towards jihad.

5 - It is obligatory to obey the commands of the Caliph, even if he is unjust.

6 - A caliph must be a Muslim, a non-slave and a male.

7 - The Muslim public must remove the Caliph in one case, if he rejects Islam.

8 - A Muslim who leaves Islam must be killed immediately.

9 - A Muslim will be forgiven for murder of: 1) an apostasy 2) an adulterer 3) a highway robber. Making vigilante street justice and honor killing acceptable.

10 - A Muslim will not get the death penalty if he kills a non-Muslim.

11- Sharia never abolished slavery and sexual slavery and highly regulates it. A master will not be punished for killing his slave.

12 - Sharia dictates death by stoning, beheading, amputation of limbs, flogging and other forms of cruel and unusual punishments even for crimes of sin such as adultery.

13 - Non-Muslims are not equal to Muslims and must comply to Sharia if they are to remain safe. They are forbidden to marry Muslim women, publicly display wine or pork, recite their scriptures or openly celebrate their religious holidays or funerals. They are forbidden from building new churches or building them higher than mosques. They may not enter a mosque without permission. A non-Muslim is no longer protected if he commits adultery with a Muslim woman or if he leads a Muslim away from Islam.

14 - It is a crime for a non-Muslim to sell weapons to someone who will use them against Muslims. Non-Muslims cannot curse a Muslim, say anything derogatory about Allah, the Prophet, or Islam, or expose the weak points of Muslims. However, the opposite is not true for Muslims.

15 - A non-Muslim cannot inherit from a Muslim.

16 - Banks must be Sharia compliant and interest is not allowed.

17 - No testimony in court is acceptable from people of low-level jobs, such as street sweepers or a bathhouse attendant. Women in such low-level jobs such as professional funeral mourners cannot keep custody of their children in case of divorce.

18 - A non-Muslim cannot rule even over a non-Muslims minority.

19 - H***sexuality is punishable by death.

20 - There is no age limit for marriage of girls under Sharia. The marriage contract can take place any time after birth and consummated at age 8 or 9.

21 - Rebelliousness on the part of the wife nullifies the husband’s obligation to support her, gives him permission to beat her and keep her from leaving the home.

22 - Divorce is only in the hands of the husband and is as easy as saying: “I divorce you” and becomes effective even if the husband did not intend it.

23 - There is no community property between husband and wife and the husband’s property does not automatically go to the wife after his death.

24 - A woman inherits half what a man inherits.

25- A man has the right to have up to 4 wives and she has no right to divorce him even if he is polygamous.

26- The dowry is given in exchange for the woman’s sexual organs.

27 - A man is allowed to have sex with slave women and women captured in battle, and if the enslaved woman is married her marriage is annulled.

28 - The testimony of a woman in court is half the value of a man.

29- A woman loses custody if she remarries.

30- To prove rape, a woman must have 4 male witnesses.

31 - A rapist may only be required to pay the bride-money (dowry) without marrying the rape victim.

32 - A Muslim woman must cover every inch of her body which is considered “Awrah,” a sexual organ. Some schools of Sharia allow the face and some don’t.

33 - A Muslim man is forgiven if he kills his wife caught in the act of adultery. However, the opposite is not true for women since he “could be married to the woman he was caught with.”

The above are clear-cut laws in Islam decided by great Imams after years of examination and interpretation of the Quran, Hadith and Mohammed’s life. Now let the learned Imam Rauf tell us what part of the above is compliant with the US constitution?

Back when I was a High School Kid - in Fort Worth, Texas – we happily lived in our little bubble of caucasian indifference to people who did not look like us – why? Because our school was segregated – we had no blacks and only a few Hispanics. They did not live in our neighborhood and we just didn’t know them – at all.

Then on my first day of school in my Junior Year – a shocking thing happened. A black family drove up parked in front of the School and marched inside – Mom, Dad and their Son. Fifteen minutes later – they came back out and left – we never saw them again.

That was 46 years ago – we have come a long way from that day. I tell my kids that story and they are shocked by it.

Perhaps – in 46 more years – somebody we will look back at parts of this video and will be shocked. Cautiously, I say “Let’s hope so.”
