The liberal group MoveOn.org ramped up its campaign against Target Corp. Tuesday with a new TV ad urging shoppers to boycott the retail giant over its $150,000 donation to a Minnesota politician who opposes gay marriage – and its decision not to give a matching amount to pro-gay candidates for balance.

The 30-second ad slams Target for supporting Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, a staunch conservative, according to a statement from MoveOn.org. It calls Target “one of the very first companies to take advantage of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision allowing unlimited corporate cash in elections,” and cites a poll showing most voters don’t like corporate spending on political campaigns.

“Target’s refusal to acknowledge its customers’ outrage at their attempt to buy elections is scandalous,” Justin Ruben, Executive Director of MoveOn.org, said in the statement. “Americans have spoken: we don’t want corporations meddling in our democracy. Corporate money in elections is nothing more than political bribery and we’re not going to stop targeting Target until they stop trying to buy our elections.”

On Monday, despite pressure from MoveOn, Human Rights Campaign and other gay rights groups, Target declined to contribute $150,000 to pro-gay rights candidates. The company maintained it fully supports the gay and lesbian community in its workplaces and through corporate sponsorships, but it decided to keep its options open, “given the current political and emotionally charged environment.”

“We believe that it is impossible to avoid turning any further actions into a political issue and will use the benefit of time to make thoughtful, careful decisions on how best to move forward,” according to the company’s statement.

HRC and MoveOn.org have spearheaded petition drives and a boycott of Target since it decided to support Emmer, a state House member who angered the progressive community for his conservative positions on abortion and birth control. Target officials have said the donation to a newly-formed business group, Minnesota Forward, came from its business account rather than its internal political action committee; the retailer is backing Emmer because he appeared to be the strongest pro-business candidate in the race.

After employees and outside groups complained, Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel issued memos to his workers explaining his motivation for the donation and apologizing if it upset them. He also reiterated the company’s commitment to equal rights within the workplace and its sponsorship of gay rights events in Minnesota.

But HRC had hoped to convince the firm to donate $150,000 to pro-gay rights candidates and groups in Minnesota to “make right” its support for Emmer. After weeks of negotiations, HRC officials said Monday that the talks had broken down without a deal.

HRC said it will devote $150,000 of its resources to defeat Emmer. And MoveOn members are still calling for a boycott of the national chain that had nurtured strong ties to the gay community through its store locations, marketing, and non-discriminatory employee benefits program.

In addition, Solmonese said the gay community is now pressuring Best Buy, which donated $100,000 to Minnesota Forward’s pro-Emmer advertising campaign. Like Target, Best Buy receives one of the highest corporate rankings for workplace equality issues from the HRC.

While nodding to those rankings, Solmonese said that “before they can regain that exalted status among their consumers, they need to make things right in Minnesota.”

FWIW, both Target and Best Buy have a long history of supporting "progressive" events and organizations. That they would contribute to Minnesota Forward in order to help Mr. Emmer's campaign indicates how dangerous they feel the policies of his competition could be for the business climate here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. MOO

That said, this small donation makes me feel slightly less sick about the number of stops my wife seems to make at Target.:D

Mine, too - and I feel sorry for any MoveOn.Orgers who try to keep her from her self-appointed shopping rounds there. ;)

Target Corp (TGT.N) posted higher quarterly earnings, helped by sales of more profitable items like clothing and improved profit at its credit card business. The discounter said profit rose to $679 million, or 92 cents a share, in the second quarter ended July 31 from $594 million, or 79 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts on average had forecast 92 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Earlier this month, Target reported sales of $15.13 billion for the quarter at its retail business, up 3.8 percent from a year earlier. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 1.7 percent. On Tuesday, larger rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) posted 1.8 percent drop in same-store sales at its U.S. discount stores.

As countless numbers of college students prepare to return to dorm rooms they will probably be shopping at Target for life's necessities. Our college senior daughter has spent $$$ again for the next semester. Good luck convincing them, who grew up shopping at Target, that it's a bad place to spend money. :boohoo

We are there several times a week as there's one about two miles from the house. We also get our prescriptions filled there as it's much faster and cheaper (when time and gas are factored in) than going on post.

Not to mention it's also much cleaner, the parking lot safer, and the employees more respectful than our neighborhood Walmart.

We have the same experience here with Walmart, I don't venture there unless required to do so. And when I don't shop, I get in and out as quickly as possible. In addition I find that Walmart is dirty, very noisy, very hurried, whereas as our Target is a clean, quiet and calm environment.

TARJAY is okay but I prefer JACQUES PENWAUGH (JC Penny) :D

As for Walmart, I swear the guy who designs their parking lots used to be a lobster fisherman/lobster trap designer. You can drive in with no problem but you're screwed if you want to get out.

This seems to be a common theme. Although I try to avoid Walmart for the reasons listed above, while there last year I was targeted by a couple of hoodlums. I would not want my wife shopping there alone.

There was a study done a few years back that showed a distinct correlation between a Super Walmart opening and the level of street crime rising. Something to do with their all night hours and dimly lit parking lots. At any given time after the sun goes down you can buy the latest "DVDs" of movies that have just opened in our Walmart parking lot.

You can also aid your fellow citizen that "ran out of gas," or "is trying to pay for one more night at a hotel."

I’d like to see some non-biased studies on that. RVing around the country, we often stay overnight in WM parking lots and have noticed nothing out of the ordinary. There are RV “boondocking” forums with many discussions about overnighting at big box stores, and the only negative comments I remember are teenagers hot-rodding through the lots and honking.

Pat

ETA: There are negative comments about WM, but they are usually from campground owners and those who are anti-WM for political reasons.

Well, I am not a big fan of Target since 2004 when they refused to let Toys for Tots collect toys on their properties...oh and that same year Target barred the Salvation Army from soliciting donations at its stores.

Just throwing it out there.

I don't totally agree with the study, as I believe most statistics can be skewered; but based on my own observations...there is some truth there. I think you could also see similar stats on large mall parking lots as well though.
