As was talked about in the Aimpoint/ EOTECH thread, here's a pic of the ACOG/ JPoint set up I was talking about earlier. As you can see the JPoint mount has protective wings to help protect it.

Here's a side shot.

Who made the mount?

Your TS had them made custom, but are they commercially available or were they a one time deal?

The mount is available from JPoint. They make two mount models one for the NSN ACOG and one for the civilian market ACOG. I don't know the difference between the two. My fellow Tm Sgt Brett submitted the idea for the mount to JPoint and they made one for him and have since started to offer them on their site.

I think the NSN model has rudimentry back up sights on top, and the standard civvie model does not. But I am not positive.

Cool looking system, much smaller than the aimpoint mounted over a Swarovski that a friend of mine had set up for 3 gun in the early 90's.

I believe you are correct on the difference with civvie model not having the back up sight. I'm not too familiar with the civvie side of these optics.

That looks like a really nice set-up. I just might have to give that a try when I get my ACOG. Is it a sturdy mount?

I need to caveat these photo's are not my set up. They were sent to me by J Point, as I'm in the process of aquiring some of these for my ODA. I have seen this set up first hand on a friend's work gun and it is a sturdy set. Now I'm sure there are some applications that might warrant a more protective hood, like jumping with it exposed but I have yet to do that in either of my two tours in Iraq.

pretty cool.

some of the tac-team guys and various gun-gomers were discussing the shortcomings of the ACOG since most police engagements are so short range. They have been using some of the Leupold CQ/Ts but they aren't a very good solution for needing magnification sometimes and close-up sometimes too without having a lot of lead time - whatever is in the car is what gets deployed at short notice. might be a perimeter gun, might be on the entry team for a hasty kind of situation.

I guess you have to be careful about torquing those screws down on the ring... have they looked at putting a second ring on it farther forward? Never mind, I'll just point them at this and have them give JP a call.

If the ACOG is set-up and used properly, the mag is not an issue, even for CQB.

The BAC effect, which requires both eyes open, makes the optic funtion basically as an OEG until the dominant eye acquires the target and focuses on it. Till then, the dominant eye is just picking up the reticle as an aiming point.

I have seen guys run flip-up opaque covers or put a strip of tape over the objective lens to get the full OEG effect. You can always flip it off for a longer precision shot. The Killflash also helps with this.

You may want to do some research into the Bindon Aiming Concept and try it out. I would recommend mounting the optic as far forward as possible to get the best effect. That is the deficiency in the TA-31. Due to optical principles, it does not have the eye relief of the TA11 or Compact ACOGs.

The BAC works great for me though.

Personally, I never had much success w/ BAC. But I'm cross-dominant (left eye, right hand) so I think that tracking with my dominant eye and having the dot in front of my weak eye, rather than the other way like 'normal' people, has something to do with that.

Anyone else goofy-eye'd have trouble with this?

it is also hell on my trap and skeet game ;)

Sorry for the necropost, but I've got a problem with the TA01NSN bopping me in the nose whenever it's in the proper alignment with my eye. If I'm seeing no shadow, it hits me right in the bridge of the nose, and if I get in enough rounds it starts bleeding and it'll start giving me a flinch. Is there any solution to this or do I just give up on ACOGs due to my huge schnoz?

What type of weapon are you shooting it on?

Assuming this is on an AR-15 type platform, to better help you I would specifically like to know the following:

1) Weapon system
2) Caliber
3) Barrel length
4) How tall of a riser are you using (if any)
5) Flat top or carry handle mount

There are a thousand other "issues" that maybe directly or indirectly affecting you but those are the few questions I can think of in a few short minutes and I need to go run.

It's beat me up on every AR I've put it on. They've all been 5.56, and at least two of them were Army M4's. I had it on one 16" AR with the rifle length gas system, which made it shoot extremely soft, and that one cut me up too. All of these were off of a Larue flat top mount.

Just so you know, I do have a big nose.

Just so you know, I do have a big nose.

If that's the case, then if you put the tip of your schnoz on the back of the charging handle (a common anatomical reference point to produce a consistent cheek-stock weld), your eye should be further away from the optic than if you had a small nose. Have you tried moving the optic further down the rail and adjusted your cheek-stock weld higher or lower on your face to see if you lose the shadow?

Well then, my only other recommendation would be .5 inch risers. This also helps take the torque out of your neck while maintaining your cheek weld.

Gentlemen, I have one of the J Point NSN ACOGs. I bought this while in Iraq last year, but never took it on missions.

First, images:

Second, I have not mounted or shot it, the only mods I have done to it are adding a Larue ACOG mount and a killflash.

It will get added to a weapon later this year that I will be shooting a lot now that I have the time.

Notes

1. There are no BUIS on the sight, the JPoint takes the place of them.

2. The reticle is different from a regular ACOG NSN model.

3. JPoint will hook an active duty guy up, I think I got 10% off, and at over $1K that was about $100+, very nice indeedy.

If you have questions on this piece of kit feel free to ask me, just keep in mind I have not range tested it yet.
