Just curious, how often do 18Es use microcomputers? And if so, what OSs are typically used?

reason I'm asking, is because due to my Network Technician Certificate I'll be getting alongside my ATA, well, I'll be taking Windows XP, LINUX, and VISTA.

This fall quarter I'll be learning everything related to windows XP from the command lines, to the full user interface. (Everything the entire OS is capable of doing, I'll be training in on top of my ET courses, I know, this quarter, and the following 2 years I'll have no life outside of the IT/ET schooling) Winter quarter it'll be the same, only with Linux, and Spring quarter will be everything about VISTA, Summer Quarter it'll be the same but with Windows 7/MAC OSs. (Windows 7, and the new MAC OS are programmed to be identicle OSs, only with a few "tweaks" here and there that are said to be different)

It's to my knowledge that 18Es are fluent in C++, PHP, and are trained in A+ on top of the Logarithms, etc. correct?

How much time do you typically spend working MCs and Ts?

I've read quite a bit regarding SIGDETs, and other "rear echlons" 18Es work in. and was curious how involved they were with MCs. Is there a central CS which links to multiple Ts? Or are all MCs broken up into different sections, under different CSs?

And also, are 18Es in areas outside of an ODA responsible for running, and maintain information/computer networks? Or are those responsibilities handed out to 25S, 25U, 25B, and 25Cs respectively?

Is there any information about how DSN, and other military networks work? (I'll be learning about how that stuff works overtime anyway, but if I can get a leg up, it'd be nice). And is there a universal OS used across the Army (Navy uses a dual OS setup between XP and LINUX, does the Army do similar?)

And if this doesn't fall under OPSEC, I was curious to know how a connection between field mobile SATCOM systems used by the Army integrate with the MCs used in rear echlons? I'm still studying logarithms of radio signals etc. and how transmitters pick them up, and translate the information. But I was curious to know if the SATCOM systems are no different?

Last question I'll be asking for hopefully quite some time.

Thanks for any info.

Draco:

Stop asking these inane questions.

You will almost certainly never need to know the answers.

If you are ever selected for 18E, let me know and I will reopen this thread.

Sign up for 18X, and if you are selected for 18E, you will eventually have ALL of your questions answered, if you make it to 18E!!!

For those that have not yet figured it out, we will not disclose ANY, possible CLOSE HOLD information, whether it is current or from the past. If something is questionable, we will ALWAYS err on the side of Opsec/Persec, for the obvious Security Reasons!!

Take care.
