Given the wealth of wisdom and experience on this board I was wondering if any of the BTDT types, vets, or LEO's might share stories or instances of command presence or inspirational leadership they witnessed during their service?

In 1968, I was a part of the Third Mobile Strike Force (B-36) which was commanded by Major James (Bo) Gritz. A recon team got into it with a company of NVA and called for an extraction. Because of the amount of enemy fire (rifle, machine gun and RPGs) the regular pilots wouldn't go in to pick up the team.

Bo, who was a self qualified helicopter pilot, Told the team that he was coming to get them. All the way in Gritz cried like a wild cat because that was his radio call sign. He picked the team up and gave them a ride back to Song Be.

Any one of those men and anybody else who heard the radio transmissions would have followed Gritz anywhere he cared to lead them.
