Like I said before, liberalism is coming to an end. Like must ideologies, they sowed the seeds of their own destruction.

Board of Education adopted a social studies and history curriculum Friday that amends or waters down the teaching of the civil rights movement, slavery, America's relationship with the U.N. and hundreds of other items.

The ideological debate over the guidelines, which drew intense scrutiny beyond Texas, will be used to teach some 4.8 million Texas students for the next 10 years.

The standards also will be used by textbook publishers who often develop materials for other states based on those approved in Texas, although teachers in the Lone Star state have latitude in deciding which material to teach.

The board took separate votes on standards for high schools and kindergarten through eighth grades. The final vote was 9-5 on each set of standards.

The debate has brought national attention, including testimony from educators, civil rights leaders and a former U.S. education secretary.

The ideological dispute contributed to the defeat of one of the board's most outspoken conservatives, Chairman Don McLeroy, in the March state Republican primary.

In final edits leading up to the vote, conservatives rejected language to modernize the classification of historic periods to B.C.E. and C.E. from the traditional B.C. and A.D. They also required that public school students in Texas evaluate efforts by global organizations such as the United Nations to undermine U.S. sovereignty.

McLeroy offered the amendment requiring students to evaluate efforts by global organizations including the U.N. to undermine U.S. sovereignty, saying they threatened individual liberty and freedom.

During the monthslong process of creating the guidelines, conservatives successfully strengthened the requirements on teaching the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation's Founding Fathers and attempted to water down rationale for the separation of church and state.

The standards will refer to the U.S. government as a "constitutional republic," rather than "democratic," and students will be required to study the decline in the value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.

Conservatives say the Texas history curriculum has been unfairly skewed to the left after years of Democrats controlling the board.

Educators have blasted the proposed curriculum for politicizing education. Teachers also have said the document is too long and will force students to memorize lists of names rather than thinking critically.

Education standards in this country have always been a little odd. What is really scary is that European students often know more about our history than we do. Instead of bickering about which way to slant what happened, just teach WHAT HAPPENED, from all sides! Teach WHY people left Europe for a new world. WHAT was the initial reactions from the indigenous peoples and the settlers. WHAT changed in the relationships and why. What caused the beginnings of the civil rights movement, who were the key players and what were their differing opinions. What were the political motivations for keeping the vote from women, for allowing slavery, for breaking treaties with Native Americans, and so on. Just teach it the way it happened, period!

Why Johnny can't read and Suzy can't figure out that her credit card bill is more than her monthly salary!

Also explains why the Pope is more interested in denouncing scientists making a new cell than how many children were molested by priests.

Politics is far more important than the truth to far too many people.

So...was the so-called "American Revolution" a revolution or a war for independence?

And so it goes...;)

Would be easier to reply if you defined the terms.

Yep, we do!! Our standards will be decided by POLITICIANS not educators or historians. I am assuming that everyone knows that Mcleroy believes the world is 6000 years old and that is what he believes should be taught instead of evolution? He can't be wrong because the Bible tells him so!! He didn't get that in YET but they are patient. In the meantime, in hundreds of churches all across the state, the word is quietly being passed and money collected to support candidate for local Boards of Education who will promote those with views like his. But don't expain those views prior to the election!! Hell no, because then then you won't win! Make it a stealth campaign! And the smirky self righteous assholes will be one step closer to promoting their views of history to the exclusion of all others. And they do so while declaring themselves to be the only real Christians and patriots. You know, because liberals are traitors to God and America.
You want to idolize people like McLeroy? I want to put my fist right in the middle of his smirky self righteous grin!!

As a young conservative in a blue state out of high school for just under a year I can not even begin to describe what a relief it is to hear this. Just as an example of what is being shoved down our throats here in CT i didn't know that the Civil War was largely caused by the vast economic differences between the North and the South until i took AP American history taught by a conservative, until that point i thought that slavery was THE issue for the split. If i may make one more point i would also like to see black history month abolished, now bear with me on this. There is not one piece of "black history" that was not a large part of American history it only creates a needless divide between black and white and is counter productive to its original purpose, there is no reason that there needs to be a whole month dedicated to the civil-rights movement when it can be taught just as any other unit in American history, in fact i believe this is a large part of why we never got past the early 70's in history come to think of it...
just my 2 cents

Richard, is there really a difference? What started as a "Revolution" against the treatment of the colonials by their English rulers became a "War for Independence" from those same rulers. I do not see how they are mutually exclusive.

Yep, we do!! Our standards will be decided by POLITICIANS not educators or historians.

Unfortunately, the educators are run by left-wing unions that have been rewriting history since Wilson. Progressives have ruined eduacation and the right hasn't done much better.

Don't you hate that! Kind of like most of the current liberals in office today. Kind of like our current president. I'm sure the new candidate for the supreme court will be very forthcoming on her beliefs, etc. No stealth campaign there.

You know, because liberals are traitors to God and America.
Some things make so much sense, it's hard to argue against them. :D
