I just hope this doesn't spark a new attack on Assault Rifles.
I read that they were killed on an interdiction stop. I'd like to know if they found any drugs in the suspects' vehicle.
It seems like half (or more) of the violent crime we experience today is in one way or another driven by our country's desire for drugs.

Last night the news coming out of Memphis seemed to a nice mash up of relevant additional information along with a dose of liberalism. The "Anatomy of a Shootout" special segment hadn't been on more than 15-20 minutes before the anchors were asking about reinstating the assault weapons ban.
Early reports coming in hear in Northeast AR did indicate they had AKs or something similar, but later in the evening it moved to unsubstantiated reports of a "long rifle and pistol." But of course the cat was out of the bag at that point and they began questioning the need for citizens to be so armed.
The Memphis chief on as a guest did a great job deflecting the issue asking instead that we consider the mental state that creates such "aberrant" behavior rather than what weapons they may or may not have been using.

Police: Ohio man, son killed Ark. officers

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An anti-government Ohio man who had several run-ins with police around the U.S. was identified Friday as one of two people who allegedly gunned down two officers during a traffic stop in Arkansas.
Arkansas State Police on Friday identified the pair — killed during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers — as Jerry R. Kane Jr., 45, of Forest, Ohio, and his son, Joesph T. Kane, believed to be 16.
About 90 minutes before the shootout Thursday with police, Sgt. Brandon Paudert, 39, and Officer Bill Evans, 38, were killed with AK-47 assault rifles after stopping a minivan on Interstate 40 in West Memphis, Ark., authorities said.
Jerry Kane, who used the Internet to question federal and local governments' authority over him, made money holding debt-elimination seminars around the country. He had a long history with police and recently complained about being busted at a "Nazi checkpoint" near Carrizozo, N.M., where court records show he spent three days in jail before posting a $1,500 bond on charges of driving without a license and concealing his identity.
Clark County, Ohio, Sheriff Gene Kelly told The Associated Press on Friday that he had issued a warning to officers on July 21, 2004, about Kane, saying he might be dangerous to law enforcement. Kelly said he based his conclusion on a conversation he had with Kane over a sentence Kane received for some traffic violations.
Kelly said Kane had complained in July 2004 about being sentenced to six days of community service for driving with an expired license plate and no seat belt, saying the judge had tried to "enslave" him. Kelly said Kane added that he was a "free man" and asked for $100,000 per day in gold or silver.
"After listening to this man for almost 30 minutes, I feel that he is expecting and prepared for confrontations with any law enforcement officer that may come in contact with him," Kelly wrote in his warning to officers.
Kelly told the AP on Friday that he wrote the warning because he was "very concerned about a potential confrontation and about his resentment of authority."
On an Internet radio show — hosted on a website that lets amateurs create their own shows and live discussions — Kane expressed outrage about his New Mexico arrest.
"I ran into a Nazi checkpoint in the middle of New Mexico where they were demanding papers or jail," he said. "That was the option. Either produce your papers or go to jail. So I entered into commerce with them under threat, duress and coercion, and spent 47 hours in there."
Kane said he planned to file a counterclaim alleging kidnapping and extortion against those involved in his arrest and detention. Kane also said he had an officer sign a document that said the officer must pay for using Kane's name.
"I am now putting together an invoice for him for approximately $80,000 in gold for the eight times he used my name," Kane said on the radio show. "I already have done a background check on him. I found out where he lives, his address, his wife's name."
Mark Potok, who directs hate-group research at the Southern Poverty Law Center, said Kane had not been in the group's database before Thursday. But he said that was not surprising, given the "explosive growth" in the anti-government movement in recent years. With 363 new groups in 2009, there are now 512, Potok said.
Members of so-called patriot groups don't recognize the authority of the U.S. government and consider themselves sovereign citizens.
JJ MacNab, a Maryland-based insurance analyst who has testified before Congress on tax and financial scams, said she had been tracking Kane for about two years and that his business centered on debt-avoidance scams.
Potok said such scams are common in the sovereign citizen movement.
"He basically promised them they would never have to repay their mortgage or credit card debt," MacNab said.
Kane's website showed he held one of his seminars in Las Vegas 15-16 and that he was due to appear in Safety Harbor, Fla., May 28-29. His website Friday asked that donations be sent to an address in Clearwater, Fla., to help his family.
At that Florida address, a woman, speaking through the front door, told an AP reporter to leave the property when he knocked and identified himself. Two bicycles were in front of the unkempt, single-story home and exercise equipment was on the porch. A sign on the front door read: "No visitors. This means you. Thank you for understanding."
A woman who answered the door at the home of Kane's mother, Patricia Holt of Marysville, Ohio, also told an AP reporter to leave and said she had no comment. She did not identify herself.

I can't believe how no one says anything when he talks about how if he kills one he won't be able to stop because he has an "addictive personality."
I wonder how many people that new this guy would say "I can't believe he would do something like that."
What a POS.

I just hope this doesn't spark a new attack on Assault Rifles.
In light of this the W. Memphis police announced today this:
WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. - A brand new gun policy is in place in West Memphis where officers will be trained and allowed to carry high powered semi-automatic weapons. One captain said the changes have been a long time coming, but more important now in light of the Wal-Mart shoot out on May 20th.
"That situation at Wal-Mart could have gotten out of hand really, really quick in a busy parking lot," said Assistant Chief Mike Allen while addressing the West Memphis Police Commission, and city council members who dropped in on the meeting.
"May 20th at Wal-Mart was a wake up call for us, how serious things can get very, very quickly now," said Captain Donald Oakes. He and other high ranking officers at the West Memphis Police Department are serious about changing their gun policy.
"We just want to be prepared. This had, we had been discussing this for a very long time. It's not new. This is just a time we could move forward," said Oakes.
Oakes has done extensive research on adding more high powered rifles to their arsenal of weapons.
"We would like to have a few out, all the time the policy changes were presented to city council Thursday and passed in a vote of 7-4," said Oakes.
The policy is similar to that of the Little Rock Police Department's policies and procedures. It will require all officers who want the patrol rifles undergo extensive training.
"Handguns are sometimes inadequate for some situations because of the limitations, the limited affected range, and limited accuracy," said Allen.
Both Allen and Oakes felt the need to move forward with the measure before the school bell rings in the fall.
"we don't want to be able to say, we're sorry because we didn't have adequate firepower to protect your child," said Allen.
"We've seen it Jonesboro, we've seen it in Columbine, we've seen it at Virginia Tech, you can go down the list where this occurred," said Oakes.
Oakes said we've seen it too many times before on school campuses. He wants this department to be safe rather than sorry.
City council Member Taz Tyrone agreed saying why wait?
"God forbid something else happen like we've already had happen, and we're still not ready for it. I think we need to get this approved as quickly as possible," said Tyrone.
The new policy was passed Thursday afternoon.
Captain Oakes said the officers would be trained by the lieutenant who is also a commander of the swat team. They would also receive assistance from the Shelby County and Memphis police swat teams.

West Memphis is getting to be a scary place, between car bombings and serious shootouts, they're making Memphis look sane... Funny, I haven't seen the leftwingers out in droves about it yet, but then again, they all live in Mid-Town and I suppose they don't think anything over the bridge has anything to do with them... I was honestly surprised that they didn't already have a policy such as this.

Wildlife Officers are trained to the same standards as other State Police officers in most states. They are usually pretty good at handling two legged critters.
He done good!
