WASHINGTON: Reports of Taliban supreme Mullah Omar being captured in Pakistan raged through Washington on Tuesday, a day after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused some Pakistani officials of sheltering Osama bin Laden and the Taliban leadership.

The Obama administration did not respond to the reports, and independent sources said they had not been able to confirm the information.

Reports of Mullah Omar's capture or custody first surfaced on the popular blog Brietbart where an analyst who formerly worked with the Department of Homeland Security claimed that through ''key intelligence sources'' in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he had just learned that Mullah Omar has been taken into custody.

''At the end of March, US Military Intelligence was informed by US operatives working in the Af/Pak theater on behalf of the D.O.D. that Omar had been detained by Pakistani authorities. One would assume that this would be passed up the chain and that the Secretary of Defense would have been alerted immediately. From what I am hearing, that may not have been the case,'' the analyst, Brad Thor, said.

''When this explosive information was quietly confirmed to United States Intelligence ten days ago by Pakistani authorities, it appeared to take the Defense Department by surprise. No one, though, is going to be more surprised than Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. It seems even with confirmation from the Pakistanis themselves, she was never brought up to speed,'' he added, referring to Clinton’s remark on CBS 60 minutes on Sunday that some officials in Pakistan were sheltering Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar.

But the administration maintained a stony silence on the report -- which suggested Clinton was out of the military-intelligence loop -- unlike in the case of Taliban No.2 Mullah Baradar, whose capture was first leaked in Washington.

Meanwhile, various Obama administration officials went into a damage control overdrive on Monday to mollify Pakistan after Clinton warned Islamabad of ''severe consequences'' if any future terrorist attack was traced to Pakistan in the 60 Minutes interview.

Officials went so far as to deny that Clinton had even used the expression much less made a threat, but when faced with the 60 minutes clip posted on the CBS website, questioned the context in which she made the comment.

"I think she (Clinton) was responding to a hypothetical question that the U.S would take seriously any link to a foreign country where there are successful terrorist attacks. She's not singling out any one country in particular," State Department Spokesman Philip Crowley asserted.

But Clinton clearly singled out Pakistan, and her remarks were unmistakably in the context of the Times Square bombing attempt. ''Heaven forbid that at attack like this that we can trace back to Pakistan were to have been successful, there would be very severe consequences,'' Clinton said.

The Obama administration's Af-Pak pointman Richard Holbrooke too took a pacifying role on the episode amid an outpouring of anger in Pakistan over Clinton’s remark. Because the interview was not shown in its entirety, the quotes appeared to be different from what the Secretary of State actually meant, he suggested.

The US military, whose day-to-day operations in Afghanistan depend heavily on Pakistan, also went into overdrive to pacify the Pakistani military after Clinton’s blistering attack. Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is said to have phoned Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, chief of the Pakistani army, to reassure him that the U.S was not trying to pressure him as a result of the Times Square case.

The messages ran contrary to what Hillary Clinton seemed to suggest in her CBS 60 Minutes interview, although she too blew hot and cold over Pakistan in that exchange.

With what little faith I have in the media, I trust the Jawa Report much more than the NY Times :D

An overseas intelligence source has confirmed to the Jawa Report that Mullah Omar has been captured as originally reported by Brad Thor.

You can wait for the New York Times to catch up if you'd like, we don't mind.

Oliver North Confirms Big Government Report**
Intelligence Sources in US & Afghanistan: Mullah Omar in Hands of Pakistan’s ISI

By Lt. Col. Oliver North
May 13th 2010

Washington, DC – The two presidents – Karzai and Obama – were on stage together in the East Room of the White House for forty minutes on May 12. They each talked about how they had differed in the past and how committed they are to going forward together. Both leaders expressed great hope in their mutual “quest for peace” and the forthcoming “Peace Jirga” or “reconciliation talks” to be held in Kabul at the end of this month. Neither leader – nor any of the journalists present – mentioned a “cease fire” or the unseen skunk at their picnic: Taliban leader, Mullah Omar.

Mullah Mohammed Omar, secretive head of Afghanistan’s Taliban movement, is one of the most wanted men on Earth. His sanguinary regime sheltered Osama bin-Laden’s Al Qaeda as it prepared for the 9-11-01 attacks. The U.S. government’s “Rewards for Justice” program has a standing offer of “up to 10 million dollars” for information resulting in his capture or confirmed death because he “represents a continuing threat to America and her allies.” Now, thanks to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI), Mullah Omar may be a key factor in the upcoming “Peace Talks” trumpeted by Messer’s Obama and Karzai at their joint White House press conference.

Both heads of state avoided reference to the ISI or Mullah Omar as they gushed about the “Consultative Peace Jirga,” that starts in Kabul on May 29. And each president spoke glowingly about “commitment” to an “Afghan-led peace process” that will allegedly produce a negotiated settlement among Afghanistan’s warring parties – and the country’s neighbors – meaning Pakistan and Iran. Mr. Karzai announced he wanted to consult with “thousands of Taliban who are not ideologically oriented, who are not part of Al Qaeda, or other terrorist networks, or controlled from outside in any manner troublesome to us.”
Mr. Obama observed that the peace talks will include those who have “a respect for the Afghan constitution, rule of law, human rights, so long as they are willing to renounce violence and ties to Al Qaeda and other extremist networks.” An awkwardly worded joint communiqué vaguely noted U.S. “support for an inclusive process that includes broad representation from across all of Afghan society – both men and women – and takes into account their concerns and priorities.”

All of this sounds very promising to the so-called “International Community” and the self-declared mainstream media. It makes the striped-pants set all warm and fuzzy to see two leaders who last month appeared to be very much at odds, now standing side-by-side to pledge their troth. And of course, the forthcoming “Peace Talks” mean diplomats, not warriors, are about to have their day. Unfortunately, none of this takes into account ISI plotting about the role they intend to play in Afghanistan’s future, the part being played by the ISI’s long-time ally, Mullah Omar, or the near-total lack of intelligence on what’s really happening on the ground on either side of the Af-Pak border.

This lack of intelligence was evident last week in the aftermath of the failed Times Square bombing on May 1 when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proffered a blunt indictment of Pakistani cooperation with the U.S. Her stunning comment: “I believe somewhere in this government are people who know where Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda is (sic), where Mullah Omar and the leadership of the Afghan Taliban is (sic)…” created a diplomatic firestorm.

Hopefully, Ms. Clinton was dissembling, because intelligence sources here in the U.S. and Afghanistan inform me that Pakistani officials know exactly where Mullah Omar is: in the hands of the ISI. This should not be news to the U.S. Secretary of State.
Last month, while I was still in Afghanistan, rumors were circulating that the ISI had detained Mullah Omar in Karachi on March 27, and placed him under house arrest in what they call “community care.” American operatives say he has since been transferred to a secret ISI lock-up under the Pakistani euphemism: “institutional care.” According to several reports, all of this information was confirmed to U.S. officials by a senior Pakistani military officer “several weeks ago.”

“Why would the ISI take down ‘one of their own?’” I asked. The answer came in a mixed metaphor but the meaning was clear: “The ISI intends to be in the driver’s seat when the ‘Peace Talks’ get underway in Afghanistan later this month. And the ISI officers calling the shots know Mullah Omar is the best bargaining chip they have.”

None of this bodes well for the “Consultative Peace Jirga,” on which Mr. Obama has now placed his imprimatur. Some of those watching preparations for the “peace talks” predict a call for an immediate, Vietnam-style, “cease fire” as a pre-condition for the conference – and a demand to grant Mullah Omar – Osama bin-Laden’s closest ally – safe haven in Saudi Arabia. If the O-Team agrees to any of this, it will be akin to putting perfume on a skunk.

I can only hope this is true. I hope that the aforementioned sources did not violate OPSEC in an effort to share the news. It is my hope that neither the MSM nor the suits in Washington are talking about this because he is at some government funded resort designed for the utmost discomfort for people of Mr. Omar's caliber.

Report: Pakistani spy agency rushed Mullah Omar to hospital
By Jeff Stein

Mullah Omar, the elusive, one-eyed leader of the Afghan Taliban, had a heart attack Jan. 7 and was treated for several days in a Karachi hospital with the help of Pakistan's spy agency, according to a private intelligence network run by former CIA, State Department and military officers.

The intelligence network, operating under the auspices of a private company, “The Eclipse Group,” said its source was a physician in the Karachi hospital, which was not identified in the report, who said he saw Omar struggling to recover from an operation to put a stent in his heart.

“While I was not personally in the operating theater,” the physician reported, “my evaluation based on what I have heard and seeing the patient in the hospital is that Mullah Omar had a cardiac catheter complication resulting in either bleeding or a small cerebral vascular incident, or both.”

U.S. officials said they could not immediately verify the report.

"No one on this end has heard this," said a U.S. official from Kabul. "It doesn't mean it's not true -- we just have no information to confirm or dispute these facts."

A spokesman at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.

Yea but Brittney spears is.............................

To look at the news since the big O got in office you would hardley know we were in volved in two wars. IMHO they are only intrested in showing this country in its worst light and not our success. I give up trying to figure out why, just that it is what it is.

It didn't get more coverage because it wasn't true, not because there is a conspiracy to suppress good news. Did you miss that part?
