View Full Version : Mental skills training
My wife is a sports psychologist who works mostly with women's athletic teams. She was at a seminar today where one of the groups who presented information discussed their work with the Army on various mental skills related to being a soldier.
Some of the performance enhancement training pertains to:
Stress management;
Goal setting;
Performance routine;
Imagery;
Focusing/concentration techniques;
personal responsibility and commitment;
trust in self and teammate to perform task/goal;
self control during performance
For the members on the board, can you see Special Forces soldiers benefiting from working on the mental skills mentioned above ?
I have my opinion , but I wanted her to see some objective opinions. :lifter
I think the men who would most benefit from that training were weeded out in SFAS and the Q.
Women athletes? Depending on the sport, I volunteer to help with some mental training... ;)

Usually, when all of those things listed become necessary, it's a little late to be thinking...

Was your wife listening to an ACEP (Army Center for Enhanced Performance) briefing?

I can see where some "experts" would think SF would benefit from the above mentioned subjects, but that is primarily based on a civilian's attempt to understand the requirements of the SF soldier. Most of our mental training was developed long before SF training. It is a major player in our desire to become SF. Our training in the different groups is by mentoring of some very hard guys, who we try to emulate.

Well - I can think of a couple real tough cases that were lucky to escape being immolated!
On a serious note - stand by for Army mandated Resiliency Training. We've been directed to send representatives from every SFG(A) to the Master Resilience Trainer Course. So far we're holding the line at one per Group but we're expecting to get forced to participate down to one per Company. Another good idea spate of "sensitivity training". I will manfully refrain from sharing the rest of my opinion of the program.

Yes. The folks were from Fort Lewis.
