April 2010
Are you ready for our picnic? It’s coming soon and you’re invited to hear great music, eat excellent food and have a generally wonderful weekend!
PICNIC INFORMATION: We have reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn, Asheboro at the special rate of $65.00/night. 336-636-5222 and you must ask for the STMP rate.
Directions to the site: From Asheboro, take Route 49 South (toward Charlotte). Go ten (10) miles and turn left on Waynick Meadow Road, which is where Rt. 49 now becomes 4-lane road. Go two (2) miles on Waynick Meadow Road to our gate on the left. There is parking in the field adjacent to the pavilion, but please don’t park along the access road or on Waynick Meadow Road.
This will be the 24th such gathering. It is our big event of the year. Back in 1986, the menu was – you really don’t want to know. Each year the food gets better and now quite good. But really, 3,000 to 5,000 people don’t come from all over the U. S. just to have a good meal. They come to catch up with old friends and make new ones. They come to see “how things are”.
Looking and talking can take more than one afternoon! People start arriving at the land mid-week and by Sunday afternoon the area is packed. The best time to walk and talk is Friday and Saturday. Sunday is just too busy.
You will want to take time to see all the improvements on the land. Each season bring us quite a bit closer to what we have dreamed and hoped for. Of course you will see areas that still need improvement, but that all comes with the territory. IMPORTANT REQUEST: If anyone has any used slotted metal shelving (Dexion), we could really use them in the two new containers which are now on site. This is the type of shelving usually seen in warehouses or store rooms. Call me if you have any leads or questions!
Be sure to save some time to visit the STMP sales area. Some sales items are shown on our website, but lots of new items will be available. Save some time to visit the various Montagnards who have brought things to sell. Usually there are some beautiful weavings. One of our members is a distributor for SOG knives and there will be an opportunity for you to purchase them at a discount. This will be on an “as ordered” basis and they will not be a stock item for STMP.
Sunday, May 30th will be a busy day with all the seeing, talking, listening and eating. What about Saturday the 29th? That’s the general membership meeting at 12:00 Noon.
ELECTION INFORMATION: This year, the election will be for five directors and each will serve for two years. Below is a brief biography of each candidate so that an informed choice can be made. The Board will include at least two Montagnards but there can be more.
Y’Yung Bounya – Current board member responsible for farming operations and equipment maintenance. Provides electronic setup for events. Surgeon for FULRO.
Craig Calao – Current board member. Retired from city of New York and has hobby farm near the site. Provided plumbing & electrical work at the site.
Y’Sui H’Long – Current board member. Major organizer in Montagnard community. Coordinator for Montagnard activities on the land. Chief intelligence officer for FULRO.
Y’Pioc K’nul – Leader in the Montagnard community. Owns a construction firm and directs that type of work at the site. Worked with Army Corp of Engineers and Rangers. Works with Montagnards for on-going Special Forces training.
David “Bulldog” Smith – Past President and past board member of STMP. Retired military. Currently on board of Special Operations Association.
John Solberg – Current board member. Retired military. He & his wife operate STMP on-line sales and maintains inventory for all sales items. Works with Special Forces & Montagnard employment.
John Spencer – Current board member. Retired Asheboro business leader. Works with local governments and has gotten major funds from local organizations. Helped establish our cemetery and facilitates funerals for Montagnards.
The vast majority of those attending the picnic are Montagnards and this event is free to them. The money raised from the enclosed raffle tickets allows us to purchase the food needed for the thousands who do attend. Everyone else pays a fee of $10.00 per day. Because this event is free to so many, your support of the raffle is very important. The raffle which was very successful is the same as last year. And again like last year, anyone selling $500.00 or more of raffle tickets will have a choice of prizes.
Many of you have questioned the status of the two Vietnam Human Rights proposals before U. S. Congress, S-1159 and HR 1969. There has been no action in the last year and both bills are stuck in Committee. Several trips have been made to D.C. to try and get them moving again. A large number of letters and petitions have been sent.
In the beginning of March, STMP was invited to make a presentation to the American Legion’s joint session. There were about 400 American Legion leaders from across the nation there. We were in the big league. Before this meeting, the Legion sent a letter to the Chairman of the House Committee in support of HR 1969 and its sister bill S-1159. The Legion will also add a plank to their national platform to support this at their national convention. Also, STMP will be given the opportunity to address the convention attendees. We also hope to have an American Legion crew at the picnic. We hope that there will be an article and a video about the Montagnards and STMP.
Without this level of National publicity, it’s highly doubtful there will be any resolution to the Dega plight in S.E. Asia. Other areas of support are actively being sought. We need more voices to be heard so that the Congress will move theses two bills forward.
Looking forward to another successful picnic!
