The Big Chill: Alan Grayson could lose

Democratic firebrand Alan Grayson no doubt felt a chill today upon hearing the rumor — apparently well founded — that a bona fide Republican heavyweight is about to take him on for Florida’s 8th congressional seat.

Dan Webster, former speaker of Florida’s House of Representatives and a nearly 30-year veteran of the Legislature, is expected to announce his candidacy for Congress on Thursday.

One GOP consultant upon hearing of Webster’s supposed 11th-hour decision apparently complained that his late entry only complicates Republican aspirations for the seat.

But that’s complete nonsense. Till now, only political neophytes, relative unknowns or also-rans have been willing to take on Grayson, who’s already amassed $1.5 million in cash contributions from fans of his strident manner and unabashed liberalism.

Webster may be entering the race late, but don’t bet against him making the race a highly competitive one. Webster’s record of conservatism and accomplishment will prove a magnet to contributors, many of whom have literally prayed for someone who can give Grayson a run for his money.

And the money will pour into Webster’s campaign. That’s what working deals on behalf of Central Florida’s movers and shakers over decades will get you. Webster did that; now watch as the bigwigs return the favor.

Watch as District 8 becomes a real donnybrook.
