View Full Version : Do not ever tell me I can't do something, including making %$#^&*$ commo

I got it working, OK? There are problems, but I'm attaching video from tonight assuming I can attach a file that big. First, the set-up. Let's start with the camera. Concealed in a birdhouse.

Bought a bunch of stuff and got the camera working in a tree above the sign. Here's a photo from where the sign is:

Zoomed in on the camera in this shot. You'll notice I had to cut away some branches to clear a path from the lens to the sign.

Here is some video. I made a much shorter video with some commentary and stuff, but it is an a format that won't play on Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. :( So you get the long version.

You'll see that the angle is way too narrow. All you can see is the sign -- we won't see much of what happens to someone who touches it. I need to fix that problem.

This could have been webcast live tonight, but webmaster is on vacation. Yeah, that's an excuse, but I consider this thread to be commo made.

OK, who's got the Angry 8? Give it to RL along with a long-wire, some extra copper wire and some coconuts and put him on the seashore... :p

RL, do you need a place to put the video until Dan comes back?

The Reaper

Now all we have to do is to teach you how to size your photos to 720 width or less.

Consider putting some plexiglass in the birdhouse for protection of the camera, lest you have a much bigger loss than the sign.

Is this akin to getting the catheter in the patient's arm bragging about how easy it was before you check to see if you have an IV bag with you?

Where is the video feed, Kali lawyer man?

Well actually I was thinking that if he is having problems with his production and shooting that perhaps we could send that famous war photographer out to hell him. I believe he is great with 8mm movie cameras, is a war hero, and can spin one hell of a yarn. I think you can get in touch with him thru the Heinz Corporation and while he is out helping you, the secret service can provide local surveillance on your sign.:D

E-mail inbound. Expects delays -- it's 5MB even after I zipped it. Also sent to the other two who have been giving me hell.

Kyobanim should have it on his site with a link here in a while for the rest of you. Don't get excited -- it's just enough to show that I got the camera working, but all you can see is the sign. I need a wider angle lens or enough wire to put the camera a lot farther away.

Oh, and I am bitter. Failure sucks.

Got news for you.

You have more problems than that. Got two that look like this. It would appear that you are unable to send.

Must be the week for technology breakdowns. Somehow I killed my operating system and had to spend the day talking to some very literate cyber mechanic in Mumbai, India. Damn, while he was good and we got thru it, it was like trying to get information from a 7-11 store owner or taxi cab driver in NYC. Now everytime that I look at that damn microsoft mouse with the little red light on it all I can imagine is some Hindu has returned as my computer mouse with a mark of visnu where the light is sort of chuckling at me because I couldn't figure it out for myself.:o

OK, so here's the issue:

Do I go ahead and record footage with this setup?

Or wait until I get a better angle?

I am loathe to put the camera at risk just to get footage of someone's hands and feet taking the sign away, so I took it down for now.

The Reaper

I would reposition it to get the full person and possibly vehicle/license plate coverage of the most likely place they would park, if stopping to damage your property.

Agreed there is little sense in missing the full picture.

Kudos to RL for stepping it up a notch. LOL.

Roger that. Used to be able to rely on those little critters, now got to rely on other things so those Phrench and Indians don't creep up on the home stead undetected. Speaking about things going undetected have you caught any interlopers with your camera RL or did they rip that off too?

It is MPEG-2, and the Windows editor doesn't work on it. I have two programs that will do it, but need to figure out how to use them. :(

http://audio-video.ws/download.html

Scroll down the page and you will see a Video converter that will take mpeg2 and convert it to windows media. I have used their stuff and it is ok. It should let you download the trial version for free.

Martin

I haven't used this personally, but I've heard that this is a good and competent program for video editing:

It should satisfy your needs.

RL, you can open it with After Effects and then do a save as to a AVI file. Then use the Windows movie maker. windows movie maker is quick and dirty and will let you save it to an even more compressed format like wmf and chop it up into reasonable lengths.

I've been trying all day to export it to .avi using after effects, but it takes FOREVER and the program keeps shutting down on me. I'm continuing to try, but this is going to take a while.

That's just the app rendering the image. You need a lot of ram and a pretty hefty processor if you're rendering a 25 meg mpeg2 to avi. Try starting the conversion before you go to bed and let it run all night.

I've been down that road before.

No, this is a 10.5 GIGABYTE mpeg2! It's not running long enough to get it done. It shuts down after about an hour. I'll keep trying, but we may need to find another way.
