Have to wonder about the fierceness of a nut. However, to give the Buckeyes credit, they play in the toughest division in NCAA football and play well every year. As for the "Fightin' Irish", I believe their biggest fight is with the NCAA as they figure out how to get the easiest possible schedule each year.

LMAO. I would say they probably play one of the harder schedules out there, regularly scheduling Michigan, Michigan State, Florida State, Miami, USC, Florida, and Tennessee.

They play Navy every year, and sometimes Army the same year, but USC and Michigan are there every year, too. And doesn't Michigan play Illinois, Indiana and Northwestern every year. :lifter

Some pretty tough opponents this year:
Sat 09/04/2004 BYU @ Provo,
Sat 09/11/2004 Michigan @ Notre Dame,
Sat 09/18/2004 Michigan State @ East Lansing
Sat 09/25/2004 Washington @ Notre Dame
Sat 10/02/2004 Purdue @ Notre Dame
Sat 10/09/2004 Stanford @ Notre Dame
Sat 10/16/2004 Navy @ East Rutherford
Sat 10/23/2004 Boston College @ Notre Dame
Sat 11/06/2004 Tennessee @ Knoxville
Sat 11/13/2004 Pittsburgh @ Notre Dame
Sat 11/27/2004 USC @ Los Angeles

But we all know the greatest rivalry is Michigan vs. Ohio State. When a reporter asked Woody Hayes why he went for two against Michigan when they were up by twenty late in the game, he replied "because I couldn't go for three." LOL.

I'll have to remember who the Michigan fans are when it comes down to that game. Plus Michigan is in South Bend this year. We'll have to keep this thread going.

I became a fan of So. Cal. long before most of you were born. I played against Frank Gifford when he played HS ball for East Bakersfiel H.S.

However there is another USC (So. Carolina) worth noting if for no other reason than their coach Lou Holz. In the past two weeks Miami has lost to USC and Clemson. This should give some respect to the ACC as more than a Basketball conference. I don't know if Miami has been over rated or the ACC under rated -- perhaps both. :lifter

You are so correct TR. USC and Clemson have identical records so far this year. Clemson needs one more win for a bowl bid and it is a pretty well sure thing since they play Duke this week. I am sure that Duke has won a game or two over the years but have been insignificant since Spurier moved on. The USC V Clemson game should be a good one this year.

http://und.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111704aaa.html

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - A recent survey by The Harris Poll® of a nationwide cross section of adults has confirmed what one survey earlier this year by ESPN -- The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame are the most popular college football team in the nation among adults in the United States.

The 2004 survey, released Nov. 12, continues a long-standing trend. Notre has been America's favorite college football team every year since The Harris Poll® first started asking this question in 1997 (with the exception of 2000 and 2001 as Harris Interactive® did not poll on this topic during these years). They are followed by Ohio State, which for the first time unseats Florida State for the number two spot, while Florida State, which has been second for the past seven years, drops precipitously out of the top 10.

My Irish and Buckeyes 1 and 2.

First the Buckeyes take care of Michigan, and then the Irish upset the Trojans next week.

I don't buy that poll for a second. The Nittany Lions, while having very little to cheer about the last four years :boohoo , are more popular nationally than three of those four teams who tend to be regional (Texas, Michigan, OSU). I'll give you the Irish's popularity though Sigi there is no way to top them nationwide. GH is also correct the Big Ten is the toughest conference (followed closely by the SEC).

Just because Notre Dame is popular doesn't make them good.

And this year, Michigan is going to the Rose bowl. Where is Notre Dame going?

You left out their 2002 collapse in the Gator Bowl against mighty NC State. No. 17 North Carolina State dug deep into its playbook of tricks to pull off a 28-6 shocker over 12th-ranked Notre Dame.

Make that 1-6 in bowls for the past 10 years.

Sorry, Sigi!

Penn State is historically a great team, Googles. I was at the Fiesta Bowl in 1987 in which they beat Miami. Miami swaggered in. They slunk out.

Unfortunately Sir your boys seem to have our number. Wish I could have attended that one (miami 87). Enjoyed the yolk dripping from Testeverde's face after interception number 5! :D

(corrected with addition that TR pointed out)
I was in college last time ND won a bowl game and that was ten years ago. I chalk it up to poor coaching and worse defense. Our defense has not played well at all over that span of Bowl Games, and this year is about as sloppy as they have been in awhile.

But I love the Irish, win or lose. Probably like you love Michigan, even though they got spanked by the Ted Ginn Jr./Troy Smith show yesterday. ;)

RL,
The avatar thing is a little unfair since you post much more than I do. Although I would absolutely love to see you don the ND Avatar, I am in for $25 to the SOWF.

As much as I respect and admire TR and Greenhat, let's keep the bet. It's a good cause and I'm not going to spite the survivors of brave warriors just because the organization did something colossally stupid.

I'll go with whatever the spread is. Pick a newspaper spread source, and that source will determine the spread. How much do you want to bet?

Everything I can find on the Net says the spread is 24 points, OK?

After the ass beating at home last year I would expect a lot better of the Irish ......

Damn, Tyrone needs to find a defense, which is a staple of ND. He plays way too much like the Pac 10.

I gladly pay the tab (RL), but I think Notre Dame needs not only a new coach, but new recruiting.

And please spare me the comments about how the Golden Dome is tarnished because y'all can kiss it. If your son is going to Notre Dame he better be prepared for both freshman Physics and Chemistry and Logic and Trigonometry.

Damn I hate to lose. Damnit~
