Hollywood remake of Red Dawn spends $1m to change villains from Chinese to North Koreans... so as not to offend Beijing

Hollywood film-makers have changed the villains in a re-make of the film Red Dawn to avoid offending China and spoiling its chances of success at the box office.

The original action film starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen featured Russian troops invading America.

In the remake Chinese troops lead the invasion - but bosses at MGM studio are to spend more than $1 million on digital special effects to make it appear the invaders are from North Korea.

Military flags and symbols from China will be erased or changed as well as dialogue before the film starring Chris Hemsworth is released later this year.
Computer experts will make sure North Korean flags are seen in the film and the characters refer to the invading army from a country President Bush said was part of the 'axis of evil.'

Studio bosses took the decision because they were afraid having China invade the U.S. would not go down well at the box office in Beijing.
China is one of the biggest emerging markets for Hollywood and bosses at MGM studios didn't want to risk offence.

They also wanted to make sure the Chinese Government approved the film as only a handful of Hollywood movies areaccepted for showing each year.
Producers were worried their movie would be blacklisted....

Well, that reflect a lot of intestinal fortitude.

How the Hell would any significant number of NKs get here? On their fleet of amphibs, or dropped from their vast air force transports?

Smuggled in shipping containers! :D Of course, that would have to be done by the Chinese, so it wouldn't help the movie moguls intended goal of NOT offending them.

This really is a good example of our attitudes these days. When the Russians were the enemy we had no problem making movies showing them as evil. Then we defeated them for real. Know we are scared about offending the new enemy. I guess making them Muslims was not even considered. God we are in trouble.

Muslims were not even considered due to the fact of what transportation they have. I wonder if camels can cross the pacific...

In this case it's kind of like showing 8mm porn of your parents to the kids in the neighborhood.

FWIW, the original version of this absolutely horrible movie caused significant controversy in the TMZ.

First, it opened during the 1984 summer Olympics. Angelenos were concerned that the film detracted from the triumph of those games.
Second, the movie was absolutely horrible. (The echoing silence in the half empty Cinerama Dome was broken only by derisive comments and laughter of angry--but not bitter--members of the audience.)

How could ANY movie with Ben Johnson be "horrible"??? Bad, maybe. But, horrible??? No way!:)

Sometimes it's better to let the original movie be the "last word".

The North Koreans????? In Michigan??????? Oh, come on now......

How did they get their Army through China and Russia?

It appears Palin has a better grasp of geography than Hollywood.

I love that movie. Probably more because it was date night with my dad and it was the day I got my cast off my arm. I still remember it now, Fargo's for dinner and chapel hills mall for the movie because the Citadel was sold out.

Great memory.

Charlie Sheen was still cute back then.

Was 12 years old and living in western Colorado when the original was new.
Created lots of ideas for entertainment for my peer group.

Still head up into the Colorado mountains every summer, with the same friends, and continue that line of entertainment.
We just have better toys and more ammo now. :D

My son was 5 or 6 when we saw this together. A few months later I was getting ready to leave on a hunting trip and he asked, "Are you going to drink the blood?" We both still laugh about it...

Saw the original when I was on active duty. Agree with some of the others that we must be politically correct in this era because the Chinese hold too much of our debt.

Had a bad dream onetime that the Chinese invaded Alaska and seized the pipleline...

Correct me if I'm wrong...but in the original if they (Wolverines) could have held out until the spring there was talk about some green berets being dropped in to help.

My favorite quote from that movie...

"All that hate's gonna burn you up kid."

"It keeps me warm."

We (1-505 82nd ABN) did a jump just north of Boise, ID a few years prior to "Red Dawn". (I always thought it was after the movie!) Our OBJ was the ID National Guard base.

We took all the necessary measures and contacted the local media, newspapers, radio etc to let them know it WAS NOT an invasion and please do not shoot at us while we're under canopy.......:D
