'Hero's welcome' backfires on Fort Lewis soldier
JOINT BASE LEWIS MCCHORD, Wash. - A Fort Lewis soldier returning from Afghanistan got a hero's welcome in his home state of Wisconsin.

But as it turns out, that soldier's story and the truth aren't exactly on the same page.

The truth is that Jordan Olson really was in Afghanistan. He made patrols near Kandahar, serving in harm's way.

But he just wasn't everything he appeared to be.

When he returned home to Wisconson, he got what every soldier expects - a family welcome - plus a little bit more that he did not expect.

There was a military honor guard. And that's not all - the local newspaper was there, too - along with representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

"It was supposed to be my family there," says Olson. "I didn't know the news was going to be there."

If he had known, he might not have worn what he was wearing - a sergeant's stripes and a parachutist's badge. And he might have canned that fake limp.

You see he wasn't wounded in Afghanistan. He isn't a sergeant, and he never went to jump school.

And he may be in trouble.

Major Mike Garcia at Joint Base Lewis McChord says, "I have no explanation ... nor can I explain the rank and patches, badges he is wearing."

"This is something that his unit will look into upon his return," Garcia added.

So what was Specialist Olson thinking?

"Just wanted my family to be proud of me and over-stepped some boundaries I shouldn't have have over-stepped," he says.

And he may have one other problem - maybe a bigger one.

The local newspaper in his hometown, the Appleton Wisconsin Post Crescent, published some photos from Olson's return showing him with his mom and a young woman identified as his fiancee.

Trouble is - he's got a wife at Fort Lewis.

it just gets worser and worser. Posing, limping, media attention, girl friend, and to top it off. . . .

Probably related to the hero I put out of the Army back in '88 with all the self-proclaimed SF Medic exploits.

These clowns are even more out of it all than the three ring circus (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial) going on in Washington, DC, these days.

It would be wholly ironic and fitting if this guy was married to one of those Bobbit girls. :p

There was a Marine reservist around here that told his wife he was called up at the outset of Iraqi Freedom - left for 6 months and then showed up back home for a hero's welcome - once his story made the news, his unit outed him - he'd never been called up, never went to Iraq, had been in the area with a girlfriend the entire time - the fallout was pretty funny.

And so it goes...

When it rains, it pours. Talk about learning a lesson the hard way.

What was the line the land nav TAC's used to say?

"If you ain't cheating you ain't trying, but if we catch you cheating your out of here."

No go at this station.

So which one is worse?

This real soldier with the extra ball and chain who needed to stuff a sock in his underwear or last weeks thirsty marine who never was but dressed like one with a navy cross so he could get a beer at the legion?

Seems to be a lot of that going around lately. Funny thing is, the wives are catching on and hiring PI's to get the evidence on tape.....love being in court on days like that!! :D

Hm. So they DO start young.

I am glad that my brother didn't join the military because that'd be him in that article. When it came to integrity I got an extra large helping, he took none. :boohoo

Oh well. Folks like that only learn the hard way or not at all.

S, You know your right, this kid could have been given the same attention in his regular uniform from the VFW and the AL who were waiting to welcome him....... Instead he choose to be a "hero" and disgraced himself and his family........:( I've said this many times before but it's still valid,Stupid is as Stupid does...........

Then hiring lawyers like me...

Had a case once of a private contractor who went off to Iraq and began having his paycheck deposited into his girlfriend's account. Left his wife and child completely destitute for 6 months-- they were even evicted from their home and had to go on food stamps, while this joker was making 6k a month.

I got everything -- including his Harley. That case made my year. :D

Amen, brother! Love it when a plan comes together!!:D

Nothing like a self inflicted claymore blast to the face.... with an assist from the family.

Why aren't people proud of their accomplishments these days?

Why does everyone have to inflate their ego and become John Wayne? Oh wait, these young kids have no idea what a real American Icon Film role model is.

Maybe we should bring back the draft, and have a compulsory 2-year service for all citizens (male and female). Then at least these posers would have been in the military at one point.

The draft could come back at some point. I wrote a paper for college in regards to it, and how it would be ironic if President Obama were to re-institute it. :D

Maybe we could have the Stolen Valor act changed so that if you impersonate a Soldier, Airman, Marine, or Sailor, we can give you a military trial. With hard time at Leavenworth, cleaning bedpans at a VA hospital, and/or the Firing Squad as sentences.

A 1976 movie entitled Baby Blue Marine tells the storey of A WWII Marine.

A would-be Marine fails basic training, and is sent home wearing the "baby blue" fatigues of a washout. En route, he is mugged by a battle-fatigued Marine Raider, who leaves him to hitch-hike home in an undeserved hero's uniform. A small Colorado town takes him in, treating him like the hero he appears to be.

You think your taxes are high now? Compulsory service doesn't come cheap! Israel only implements it because her survival depends on it.

From my understanding, she was the wife... NORMAL550GIRL?

No no, I represented the wife.

Never fear, I just meant that it was a personal victory for me. She got the Harley, but he got to pay my fees. :D

Thanks for clearing that one up. I have so many comments, but OH  look at the time! :p
