Superintendent accidentally fires gun during class

"....Dwain Haggard, who used to be a Civil War re-enactor, was showing the gun to five students in Reed Point High School's American history class Friday when it fired.
No one was injured, and Haggard says he can't explain how the weapon was loaded.
He says he usually fires a cap during the demonstration, but this time there was a loud bang and the room filled with smoke........"
Ok Dwain, you are what is known as a "total Funnel Cake eatin', dead animal parts wearing, if they had it they would have used it FARB .
It's also clear the numnutts did not clear the weapon, clean the weapon or check the weapon properly.

Well, it's not because he got old and fat.
The two odd parts of the story are they mention he was an ex Civil War Reenactor but then say it fired a ball through the map.
Reenactors don't use balls - for the most part except at limited live fire demonstartions - but hunters do.
Anyway - pull out a muzzleloader the first thing you do is drop the rammer down the barrel to check for a load, dirt, fouling or anything else that should not be there.

Several years ago a Civil War re-enactor was killed at a re-enactment at Gettysburg. Someone loaded a mini-ball in his musket and shot the unfortunate re-enactor through the neck. I can't recall if the one who fired the shot was ever discovered. Thank God it was not a cannonball or canister shot.

Yup. The last thing we did when I was a re-enactor before taking the field was to hold an inspection and spring rammers. If the rammer didn't slide all the way down the barrel to the breech plug and make a disting ringing sound there was something in there and the weapon was cleared. Cartridge boxes were inspected for minie balls as well.
I used to do CW presentations to school groups back in the day until they banned all guns no matter what the purpose. I guess if your a superintendent you can waive the rules.
The ball shot through the "o" in the word "North" on a wall map.
Ah guess he were a Reb. ;)

I think that one was known. A British reenactor flew over for one of the big summer Gettysburg events. He was borrowing a pistol from somebody here in the states and was handed it loaded - really loaded. He did hit somebody on the other side but he didn't die. The weapon was tracked down to his part of the field and then to him.
A couple more involving pistols here and there. Every once in a great while some grunt fires his rammer by accident.
For any who've never seen a Civil War Reenactment - a well run one - you should see a complete weapons/safty inspection in camp prior to the battle and all the units reform after the "battle" and clear weapons.
For those in NC - the Battle of Bentonville Reenactment is at the state run Bentonville Battle Field just north of Newton Grove on the 20th and 21st of March just 11 days from now. About 40 minutes north/east of Fayetteville on Hwy 13. It's only held every five years.
Canons? An accident looking to happen. They have loading procedures for a reason. There is a YouTube clib out there somewhere of a youth ramming a powder charge when it went off. He was holding the rammer incorectly. The rammer took off, with his hand and arm followed a split second later by his body. I think his left arm was 2 foot longer than his right after than.

That's it. I'm officially disowning that state. First they vote for Obama, now're their failing proper gun safety procedures.
I'm rather embarrassed to say that Montana was the state I joined from.

...Haggard says he can't explain how the weapon was loaded.
Somebody needs to give ol' Dwain a Torah, Bible, Koran, or Book of Mormon - I'm sure there's a fuzzy explanation in there somewhere he can use to explain away his personal stupidity.
However...YMMV...and so it goes...

Hey Dozer, I was just down there two days ago at Pickwick. Always make sure to stop in at Shiloh for a jog or a bike. I would highly recommend this park/reenactment.
I remember trudging around the muddy fields of Shiloh with my wooden springfield rifle when I was a youngster getting chased by my Yank' older brothers.
