I was introduced to this book by a co-worker of mine last year, I borrowed it and couldn't give it back to him. The first chapter alone is completely riveting with his introduction to the book about how our subconscious tells our conscious what it needs to know in order to make snap decisions. This book goes to great lengths to talk about the terminology 'thin-slicing' and how we do it everyday, and the practicality and grave dangers we bring on ourselves from using this tool. It isn't a Freudian book really (although he does make various references to his theories) but more of a social study.
As a disclaimer about the author, he isn't a traditionally trained psychologist or even have a professional degree. He received his B.A. in History and was a writer for the NY Post (conservative writer, ironically) and a variety of other publications. So by going off his creds alone, his opinions are worthless. But as a reporter he gathers all of the information and evaluates the data, then designs the book around the data. But his delivery of the material is a true show of his talent as a writer.
My interest in this book holds many grounds. The one that I care most about is professionally. The ability to make good snap judgment calls these days is the difference between getting a quiet 'attaboy' or getting thrown in an Iraqi jail. This book really goes through a couple shoot-no shoot scenarios and dissects the thought process of the shooters involved.
IMHO, this book is for everyone in the industry. Gunslinger for 30 years or a cherry grunt. If you do not gain something from this book I will be surprised. Highly recommended. If you do read, I would appreciate your personal thoughts and applications as well. Thanks!
