Havn't had time to check out all those books posted by lrd.
Here is another good one .... Bat 21
Was/is a movie about it starring Gene Hackman and Danny Glover (damn shame about glover's BS political stance lately) Great read... the movie isn't bad either.... actually follows the book, more than most book to movies do. Hambleton rescued due to alot of factors (Read the book) . The main factor was "golf"

Synopsis:

The author reviews the basic concepts related to “deception.” Dr. Joseph Caddell defines terms, provides historical examples, and discusses problems associated with deception. He provides a general overview, a “primer” which is not directed at those who already possess a working knowledge of deception operations. Nevertheless, given the complex and everchanging nature of deception in the political-military environment, it may serve as a useful reminder of the basic assumptions and methods concerning the subject.

Go check out the Ariz. Univ or ASU library (or any university library for that manner), a cursory search online should tell you whether any of them are in stock. Then read em, decide which ones to buy from that. Just my suggestion, had a flashback to college and how I got things for free...

The AWC link in the OP has expired. The current reading list is located here (http://www.carlisle.army.mil/library/bibs/SMRLFeb09.pdf).

IMHO, the reading list would work better if items were grouped by topic or by theme rather than arranged alphabetically. Were it arranged differently, a reader could more easily grab two or three books on the same subject, read one in its entirety to establish an understanding of basic facts, and then read the others selectively for their argument.

I do not agree that the emphasis on recently published works is more important than an emphasis on relevant works or works that represent the cutting edge of intellectual inquiry.

When considering using lists like these, one must be careful of who the list maker might be and why they made such a list. For example, a list like the Vietnam one has some issues as far as I'm concerned - e.g., it is missing America's Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975by George C Herring (perhaps the single best overview of that war) :( and includes Bloods :eek: which - without qualification by the list maker of its contents - has been proven to contain some of the most outrageous falsehoods ever perpetuated about Vietnam veterans and SF.

Caveat emptor and GIGO applies as equally to one's reading selections, too.

The department of history at the USAF Academy sponsors the Harmon Memorial Lecture series. A brief description of the series and transcripts of the lectures are available here (http://www.usafa.af.mil/df/dfh/harmonmemorial.cfm).

FWIW, what the description does not say is that academics often use these types of lectures as opportunities to discuss a work in progress and/or the state of the field.
