So there you are contracting in the ME doing what you guys do... you come up on a guy wearing the usual stuff then you look at his feet for no particular reason and see......toe shoes.. (see attachment). :D
OMG! That reminds me of those toe socks that used to be so popular. :D

Here is the website for this particular style. trek (http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_kso_trek_m.cfm)
I have a pair too I guess I should admit.
Mine are not that, mmmmmmmm, industrial grade.
mine are purple though
five fingers classic (http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_classic_f.cfm) (hold the cursor over the color shoe to show what it looks like. I still laugh at the reactions I get when I wear them.
Gahhhh I could never wear those. My toes must be...freeeeeeeeeee! :D

To tell the truth, they feel wierd. I have yet to truly get used to them.
I prefer my whole feet to be free. Barefoot rules.
But to see some guy in body armor and all that with a pair of these on, would simply leave me falling over laughing.
Hate to admit this. Espesically here. I have a pair. Love em. They have to be the right size, but I can wear them all day and my feet are not tired. I ahve a buddy that runs 15 miles a day. Couple of Ultra runners do most of their races with them on. Black ones are very sneaky too.

I read about those in the Born to Run book. Been kind of curious.
Is Vibram the only company that makes these?

Yep, if you can get past the toes in each individual 'case'.. they are comfortable. I bought them as boat/deck shoes at a local to Anapolis marine store. The pair in the photo belong to a contractor that is also a sailor.
To be honest I initially bought them for the 'wierd' factor. I have always enjoyed walking my own dirt road. :munchin

Toe shoes, eh? Interesting. Hey, I'm all about being comfortable. I even broke out one of my Utilikilts on my last tour in Iraq to deal with the heat while building a mortar position.

It was their Workman model which is made from the same fabric as Carharts. Cotton duck cloth, I believe. Utilikilts doesn't have any tartans but they do have different camo patterns. My guys initially cast disparaging remarks at my attire until the sun hit its zenith. They were soaking with sweat and I simply took it in stride. :p
Didn't mean to derail the thread. Perhaps there should a WTF? attire thread.

To anyone that has worn and run seriously in the Vibram Five Finger shoes or the "toe shoes" have you noticed an increase in your efficiency in running, decreased foot or knee pain or injuries ect as claimed by the manufacturer? The epidemiological data between shod and non-shod populations is interesting. Do those non-shod populations run on paved roads though? Those that are part of the "barefoot running" movement believe that modern running shoes only hurt us and state that no good studies have shown that all of the pricey technology in modern day running shoes hasn't been shown to decrease injury rates.
Sure they look goofy but if my overpronation is potentially caused by weak foot and calf muscles from being supported all day instead of my muscles doing the work I'll be willing to give them a chance.

Yeah, one of the guys uses them all the time and he says run a little at a time as the muscles in your legs and feet are not used to them. However, the SGM says they hurt!!! But you do not know it until after you are through running and lyou have run too fast for too long. They are comfortable, according to them.
They also look gay as hell but do work.
The study you site is well received by many runners and when they experiment with the toe style of runnig feel better, run longer, with less pain.
Dozer, easy man! You can talk shoes without going pink. Especially when it helps you run. :D

I go barefoot a lot when around the house, but these damn NC sand spurs are friggin' out of control in the backyard.
Good medium for me. I haven't run in them yet. A few more weeks and I'll be hitting the fire breaks a few miles at a time. Still too cold in the AM to shed some covering on the feet. They are really breathable though. That is nice.

I just bought a pair of the Vibram Five Fingers and started running in them and it's feeling good. Start slow with just 1 mile runs at first as your calves will let you know you have muscles that are now working harder.
As they report, my sciatica and slight knee pain isn't felt during these short runs but only time will tell with longer runs (4-7 miles). Run times seem to have increased a little bit also.
The logic makes sense to me. No more heel pounding that distributes the force up along your spine. But they are funny looking. No arguing that.

I used a pair of the Five-Finger Flow model for a long weekend canoeing trip. They worked much better than wearing sandels or shoes as I was able to jump into the water whenever I needed to and did not have to worry about hurting my feet or draining my shoes (squishy shoes are not fun). My only complaint was that after the trip, the stitching came undone on them. I am not sure if it was an isolated incident because when I took them to MEC, I was not able to get a replacement pair as they did not have my size and it was the end of the season so they would not be getting any more in.

Toe shoes, eh? Interesting. Hey, I'm all about being comfortable. I even broke out one of my Utilikilts on my last tour in Iraq to deal with the heat while building a mortar position.
I was thinking about one of those Utilikilts myself. I love working in my garage on projects and it regularly gets over 100 degrees in there. I thought one of those kilts might be the ticket. The price is pretty high though. I bought a pair of 5 finger KSO after reading some articles on the barefoot running. I used to run in Asics Gel. I started out very slowly since I am running on pavement and just got back from a lower leg surgery. One leg is weaker than the other so I look like a broken toy running down the road. I like them. I can feel everything underfoot with no pain. I will have to see what they are like when I get back to running long distance.
I saw a guy wearing them in a Barnes and Noble today - uber-geeky and creepy looking.
I'm sticking with my Reefs.
Richard
So do they have them for monkey feet? For those poor soles that have the 2nd and 3rd toe that is as long or longer than the big toe......:eek:

SF_BHT, I have the second toe longer than my big toe and my KSO shoes work great. When I was buying them I wondered the same thing and found some info stating that sizing was ok if the second toe wasn't more than 1/6th of an inch longer than your big toe.
I bought at REI and wore a size 41 around the house for a day but found the second toe was too small so I took the shoes back and got a size 42. I normally wear a 10 to 10 1/2 shoe.
Not sure about the the third toe being longer. I think this probably would not be desirable. I have read on some other forums of some people extending the toes by heating up the rubber with a heat gun (carefully, to prevent any melting) and then putting something inside the toe to stretch it out (metal end of ratchet handle as it's close to diameter of a toe), then cool it in water. An expensive experiment at $85 a pop.

I have had my pair for over a year and Run and Ruck in them often. Any Crossfit I do in them as well.
Very good tool as it allows for your feet to be used as biomechanically intended.
The black KSO's are much less gay looking then some of the others.

I also have a pair, not as long as MolonLabeDoc has, but shortly thereafter. I love working out in them. My legs get worked like no other and the soreness that is felt are the muscles that aren't normally being used because normal shoes essentially deactivate their need. MLDoc knows more about it than myself, he can actually give you the physiology behind them. I'll just say that I have been wearing them on my ruck's carrying about 50 lbs dry while pushing my children in their jogging stroller and my legs can really tell the difference in the workout. Plus my feet will be tough as nails when I get to SFAS, which is the real bonus!

You will not be wearing toe shoes at SFAS, unless something has really changed.
Those toe shoe calluses may not be where you need them when you put your issue boots on your feet again.

Kansas, relax. It will be fine. Go to Benning, walk down the line, try on the stuff. It will fit just make sure to wear the socks you plan on wearing day to day. Issue green OR two pairs issue green with the inner ones inside out (my fav), OR those thick cheap wool yellowish ones you can sometimes find at the PX (my other fav esp in the winter), OR some HSLD ones that cost. The Army issue boot is pretty good, doesn't require much to break it in, and hold up pretty well. You'll probably get two -- summer and insulated, try them both on.
Work on regular PT before Basic, Push-ups, Sit-ups, 2 mi run for speed and also longer distance/slower (say 5 mi) for strength and endurance. Study if you want but they call it Basic Training for a reason. It is sometimes easier to learn something then to unlearn it and re-learn it.
I'll give you the same advice I didn't understand.
"20 years is a looooong time, pace yourself."
make us proud.
As for the rest of you. . . 61 posts and 1560 views of "talkin' about shoes with gurls." This is just wrong
Thank you Dozer for your advice. I will do exactly that when I get to Basic. 20 years is a long time I am just eager to get there and begin my journey. I agree, way too many people viewing this thread about shoes! Going to PT, thank you for your time.

I've had my Five Fingers for approx 45 days and have run for approx 50 miles in them. Here's what I've found
1. They're not good in public. Way too distracting. Most people say they look like gorilla feet.
2. Not good for off trail. Grass, sticks, and other funk get in between your toes and increase drag.
3. I've run on asphalt, grass, plowed ground, trails, front yards, back yards, and the local track. I prefer asphalt. The track felt the best, but I hate running on a track. My ultra marathon buddy runs mostly through people's front yards just off the side walk or in the ditch.
4. Form is key. See the various web sites regarding "Pose running" or "Chi running."
5. You must not run longer than 20 minutes for the first 10 work outs. Take it from experience. Use regular shoes for the remaining runs.
6. Not good for running on any surface where the rocks are bigger than 5 mm.
7. Overall- I did like running in them. I felt I had more control over my form and I was slightly faster. However, my calves felt like they were going to pop clean off of my legs. On the last bit of my last 10k there was a sudden and debillitating "twang" in my right calf. It is my opinion that I have suffered a partial tear of my soleus. I have been confined to the bike for the past 2 weeks. Any running causes quick fatigue to my right calf. I believe that this would not have happened had I taken more time to develop appropriate muscle conditioning prior. Lick on me.
8. I plan to slowly resume my training using these shoes once my recovery is complete (when ever that is).

You answered your own question. I own a sport-kilt in DCU, and have, in fact, worn it on deployment. One of the most comfortable things in the world. I also own a pair of "toe shoes," and my second pair should be here on wednesday. I should also note that SGMs and Training NCOs don't like it when you wear "toe shoes," to drill.

My second pair of toe shoes came in today. I got the KSO Treks, in black leather. They are Kangaroo leather, very comfortable, and have a beefed up sole, for trail running and such. Incredibly comfortable. Did a short run (3 miles) in them today, and I'm quite happy.

I don't know. I see the argument for them, but I don't think I want to force my 260lb, 32 year old body to de-evolve back to caveman times where they ran around barefoot. Over the last couple millennia the human body has evolved to work in shoes...isn't it slightly dangerous to suddenly just jump right back into the barefoot thing like our caveman cousins? Their feet, bone and muscular structure and overall physiology was made for the barefoot thing...ours isn't.
That's just me: knockin' it and not tryin' it.

I disagree, very strongly. We are not evolved to wear shoes. Not even close. Athletic shoes have only existed since the mid 20th century. Before that, running technique was the same as "barefooting," technique. I haven't personally seen the published evidence, but I've heard (for what it's worth,) that the number of knee injuries from running has increased dramatically since the advent of running shoes.
I don't think the toe shoes are "better for you," by default...but they "force," you to run with proper technique...and that is better for you. If you can learn to run properly, and force yourself to do so, in supported athletic shoes, you're probably fine. I enjoy my toe shoes, and my knees, hips, ankles, and back hurt a lot less now. That's what matters to me. I guess my experience counts more to me than all the published studies anyway.
I'm also going to have to very strongly disagree with the idea that "Over the last couple millennia the human body has evolved to work in shoes" it's actually pretty absurd. (Not meant personally)
Running shoes were invented in the 70's by a guy in his basement with a waffle iron, he gave himself brain damage and went on to form Nike. Running injuries then spiked as they became popular. The human body is designed to run with a mid-foot strike, the idea was by padding the heel you could run with a heel strike and lengthen your stride, allowing you to run faster, easier. What was not considered however is all the stress this puts on your knees, hips, ankles, back, so on and so forth.
I tried running in VFF's and got terrible blisters, even with Injini's, they are still my favorite shoes for lifting weights/crossfit though. I tried for about a month and gave up.
I now run in some New Balance 801's that do not have a built up heel (they are flat), and allow for a protected forefoot strike. I can run pain free for the first time since TACP school. I enjoy running again.
If you can go out and run in fancy running shoes with 22mm's of bullshit under your heel, you should continue to do so. If however you struggle with pain and injuries, I highly recommend you try something designed for a mid/forefoot strike.

ok. You know what? I can see where both of you are coming from. I completely agree with the need to rid our form of the ever so damaging heel strike. I'll probably stick with the flat shoes I have, similar to J8127's, but I am man enough to admit I am looking at the debate differently....thanks. I just like to speak then think. I think it's my right as a male.
I think it's my right as a male.
That made me laugh, I agree.

Love my five-fingers.
They don't make my lower extremities ache the way traditional running shoes do, during/after long runs. My only complaint is they need better stitching. The seams around my big toes on both feet have begun to part. Nothing a bit of 100-MPH tape didn't fix.

I was highly skeptical of these shoes but after trying a pair on, I went ahead and bought a pair of Treks. All I can say is that I am very impressed with them. I wore them just walking around for a few weeks just to get used to them and I must say, I did notice my calf and leg muscles getting a bit of a workout, in other words, the muscles were being used in a way they were not accustomed to. I have not experienced any blisters or durability issues with mine.
They are a bit tricky getting on at first but once you've worn them awhile I found they are a lot like gloves in that they form or mold a bit over time and it makes putting them on easier than when new.
Some people think they look weird but it really is like walking around barefoot but with the foot/sole protection you would get from most teva's/flip flops/sandals/tennis shoes.

And don't get me wrong...I'm not saying "you ain't running properly unless you are in VFFs," or anything like that. I love them, because my form and technique get sloppy when I get tired...and the VFFs force me to keep my technique honest...whereas running shoes allow me to still use bad form. As I said before, if you can maintain proper form in a running shoe, by all means do so...but I can't.

I climbed Pikes Peak on Thursday and say a young man wearing them for this hike.
I salute any guy brave enough to wear one. But tell me guys, why go that route? What's it got that a pair of shorts don't have? (Besides a breeze? :D)

62.it’s easier to run away with your kilt up than it is to be caught with your pants down….

88.Want to meet people? Wear a UK - you’ll meet people right and left!
89.I’ve worn the kilt for years, with a recent hiatus because I’d ‘outgrown’ my traditional kilt. I finally took the plunge for a UK, and I think it’s great. So does everyone I’ve discussed it with - I’ve not had a single derisive comment (not like I care). I’m a 43-year-old software engineering manager with a family (and a longtime biker) - f*** ‘em if they can’t take a joke. (Yes, I’ve ridden a motorcycle while wearing a kilt.)
90.Consider what disintegrates just as your jeans reach their maximum comfort: knees and crotch, if you’re like me. Enough said.
91.Because you can be the ‘Belle of the Ball’ at Gay Pride.
92.For women, it’s not all about what’s under the kilt. It’s about that strong self confidence and absolute masculinity you exude when wearing one, too…. no, I lied. It’s all about what’s under the kilt.

Reminds me of an old Scots joke:
Jock, a true kilt-wearing Scot, spent too long in the local pub and at closing time staggered down the lane until it began to rain. He sought cover under a tree and quickly fell into a deep drunken slumber.
The next morning two lassies on their way to work saw Jock sleeping. Whispering to themselves, the two shop girls decided to see if Jock was a real man who nothing under his kilt. Lifting his kilt they saw he was indeed regimental. Taking a blue bow from her hair, one of the lassies tied the ribbon around Jock's manhood, and laughed their way down the road.
When Jock finally woke later in the morning he need to take a powerful whizz. Lifting his kilt he spied the blue ribbon and said, "I dinna ken whar ye've been, Willie, boot I see ye've won first prize."
:p
Great list! Thanks for the laugh, Sir.
My favorite is #9: In this culture, men have spent the last century ogling women’s legs. It’s time to turn the other cheek. :D Cheek is an interesting choice of words here. :p

Heh...just remember, if we wore something under there, it would be a skirt, not a kilt.
LOL!
Then there's the old joke about Seamus, who was wearing his kilt when a curious lady asked if there was anything worn under it.
"No madam,' he replied with a flourish. "Everything is in perfect working order."
A lot of the younger Marines here run and hike in them. They all say the same thing. Take some getting use to. But after that they are good to go. I remember when Oakley first came out with the wrap around glasses. At that time everyone was wearing Ray Bans and aviator glasses. We thought the Oakley's looked stupid. Year later everyone was wearing Oakley's.
I just drank the coolaid. My old lady got me a pair of 5-fingers for a gift. Have done just a few workouts in them and wore them around the house. I must say my legs can tell something is different :lifter . I like them a lot so far, though still not something I would wear around town.
Got a pair of these a couple months ago and I run more with the five fingers than with my shoes but I occasionally transition back to my shoes. Start slow and minimal distance and work up your mileage. Im at 6 miles and my calves still burn but the good burn. FOR ME, I have noticed that I am having less knee aches since you do run differently by landing on the ball of your foot instead of the Heel. Probably not for everyone but they have felt good for me.

If you have a look at this photograph (apart from the insane dog) you can see that the soldier who is part of 10th Special Forces Group is wearing five fingers. At first I thought he just had really dirty feet but if you look at his left heel you can clearly see the Vibram Five Fingers!

Adding to the toe shoes topic, I recently bought a pair a few months earlier, and replaced my everyday shoes for them. I have ran in them, but attempt to refrain as it will be unwise due to what will be worn during SFAS. As far as PT leg strength is up, feet more durable, and running form has improved. I can't agree with modern running shoes being negative on your body as there are many types for all people, each with their own unique stride, and manner. These are just another type of utility to come out as an alternative to the latter, another avenue of approach. I happen to enjoy the benefits they have given me, the same as others who have not found them beneficial. In regards to the kilt, :D, looks like pros to cons. Charlie mic.
I was thinking just today, that the invention of the "shoe" and "dentistry", were probably the two big leaps forward in extending human life.
Elevating our bodies, just a bit above the muck, shit, and crud of life, to protect broken flesh from infection, and the fine art of pulling a bad tooth for obvious reasons.
