I call bullsh!t.....what do you guys say?? I realize that some of the guys deploying are suffering trauma. I understand PTSD. But I think this guy is using this as a convenient excuse. I also think he was not as squeaky clean as they are making him out to be. Then again, I could be wrong.:munchin

Family: Deployment changed soldier charged in sex assault

A Fort Bragg soldier charged with burglary and sexual assault was emotionally scarred by a 2007 deployment to Iraq, his family said Wednesday.

Spc. Aaron Michael Pernell, 22, of 500 Regency Drive, was charged Monday in two burglaries and a sexual assault that occurred in December in the Ste. Mere Eglise neighborhood on post.

Fayetteville police said Pernell also is a "person of interest" in a string of break-ins and rapes in the Fayetteville area over the past seven months. Investigators are comparing evidence in the cases to determine whether to charge him in any of the cases.

"I was shocked. I didn't think he was capable of doing anything like this," his grandfather, Richard Foote, said Wednesday in a telephone interview from his home in Chicopee, Mass. "I still don't believe it. I don't believe he did it. I mean, this is just something that's not in his character."

Foote said he cared for Pernell and his sister for a year while their mother was in Air Force training. The children were home-schooled and attended church regularly, he said, noting Pernell's mother and stepfather are both ordained ministers.

"The kids were well-mannered, polite," Foote said. "(I had) no trouble at all with them."

Brenda Pernell said her son acted differently after returning from Iraq. A member of 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, he is an infantryman who fires mortars.

"We all saw such a change in him,” said Brenda Pernell, who also lives in Chicopee. “He started doing things he had never done before.”

Aaron Pernell became withdrawn and began drinking heavily, his mother said. He sought counseling through the Army but was told he didn’t need it, she said.

On his MySpace page, Pernell lists his occupation as "drunkard" and calls himself "an open book."

Maj. Brian Fickel, spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division, said he was unaware of any mental health issues with Pernell.

“This is not him,” Brenda Pernell said. “He’s always been a good kid.”

“We were raised to respect women,” said his sister, Vanessa Pernell, who also lives in Chicopee.

Fayetteville police charged Aaron Pernell in September with breaking into another home, where a mother and child were inside. No one was injured in that incident, and he was released on bond.

Six women in Fayetteville and a seventh in Hope Mills reported being sexually assaulted since late June. In each case, the victim said a man broke her home – usually an apartment – late at night while she was alone, according to police reports. In an eighth case, a burglar tried to sexually assault a Fayetteville woman before fleeing.

Last month, Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said DNA from a rape that occurred last August east of Raeford matched evidence from a case in Fayetteville. Fayetteville police haven't confirmed such a link.

The Army plans to conduct an Article 32 hearing, which is the military equivalent of a probable-cause hearing, in the next week to determine whether a court-martial is warranted, Fickel said.

Saw it this morning in the FayOb.

I think he's going to be charged in the other crimes in the area.

I think the family jumping out there with "the war" defense is BS.

Too much religion as a kid - he needed to break out - but break in is what he did.

So very many questions that are unanswered here. To stick a toe in the very shallow water, so as to avoid guilty until proven innocent, post-deployment rape of the kind alleged in this article would be farfetched without some extraordinary circumstances of that deployment.

For example, military sexual trauma would be one of the few links I could imagine.... (no doesn't condone it- don't even think that's the reference here).

Depending on his age- first deployment (?)- wouldn't expect him to be the "same". However being 'different' than pre-deployment doesn't mean that deployment made him a rapist, if he is guilty of the crimes. Rape is centered on control. Some instances of rape will be found to be a traumatization of another as has been done to the individual.

Disclaimer: I don't know this kid from Adam, he may very well have been a good kid, and he is innocent until proven guilty in our society.

With the above being said I can't tell you how many times I had a thug in court hemmed up on a substantial charge, like ABWIK which is assault and battery with intent to kill for all non SC folks (it's SC's version of attempted murder...kind of) and the family especially grandparents will come in and say Johnny is such a good boy, he never hurts anybody he goes to church and loves his cousins...blah....blah...blah, even when we have Johnny on video savagely beating a guy in a bar with a pool cue, or shooting at someone at a convenience store. So the fact that his family says he's a good boy holds as much water as a sieve for me.

I'd also like to know what this guy's MOS is and what he did and where he did it while deployed, because I've seen too many fobbits coming back claiming PTSD to get out of trouble...even when they never left the wire and were never closer than 500 meters of a rocket or mortar going off, and it just makes me mad as hell.

Yeah, I get it.....I am the son of a Preacher.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child,
I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

I'd also like to know what this guy's MOS is...

The article says "infantryman who fired mortars." If that's true it means 11 charlie, but who knows what got lost on the way to the presses.

Pretty much everybody I know from the Army has been deployed more than once. I don't know anyone who did this kinda crap. The numbers say it's all him and not the deployment.

I missed that part, well ok so maybe he's gone outside the wire, he may have seen some bad stuff, hell he might even have PTSD, but as TR said that's no excuse for his crimes.

We all know how the media doesn't really understand the military and has a tendency to put their own little spin on things. Who knows what he did or didn't do. It shouldn't matter anyway. I know a more than a few people who have been in combat, but they aren't running around committing crimes. It is about mental stability.

If every soldier that experienced combat had this issue it'd be a bit tough on society.
Always hard for a family to accept the fact that their kid is a shit head so let's make excuses.
Maybe if they'd made less excuses for him earlier we wouldn't be here.
