The soldiers were among 60 to 100 members of a Special Forces Operation team that trains Pakistan’s paramilitary Frontier Corps in counter-insurgency techniques, including intelligence gathering and development assistance. The American soldiers serve under the overall command of Admiral Eric T. Olson, the head of the Special Operations Command.
The Special Forces training, under way for the last 18 months, has been acknowledged gingerly by both the Americans and the Pakistanis but has been deliberately kept low key so as not to trespass onto Pakistani sensitivities about sovereignty, and not to further inflame high anti-American sentiment.

They were on their way to an opening ceremony for a girl's school.
Several of the kids were killed as well, as I understand it.
Religion of peace, strikes again.

We lost good men from the ODAs and line-units conducting CA/MEDCAP around their A Camps/base areas in SEA - the proclaimed beliefs may have been different, but many of the tactics were similar and the results were the same - sorry MFers all no matter what they call themselves.
Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.

The most heinous and the most cruel crimes of which history has record have been committed under the cover of religion or equally noble motives.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Feb. 5, 2010) – Three Army Special Operations Soldiers died of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device in the Lower Dir District of Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province, Feb. 3.
Sergeant 1st Class David J. Hartman and Sgt. 1st Class Matthew S. Sluss-Tiller, 96th Civil Affairs Bn., 95th Civil Affairs Bde., and Staff Sgt. Mark A. Stets Jr., from 8th Psychological Operations Bn., 4th Psychological Operations Group were deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
They were among the U.S. military personnel in Pakistan to conduct training at the invitation of the Pakistan Frontier Corps, according to a U.S. Central Command press release. They were in Lower Dir to attend the inauguration ceremony of a girls’ school that had recently been renovated with U.S. humanitarian assistance.
"Both Matthew and David are heroes in my mind -- they volunteered to come to Army Special Operations and the 95th Civil Affairs Bde. (Airborne), they both believed in what they were doing, and they were committed to helping people in a place where violence against innocent populations was too often commonplace," said Col. Michael J. Warmack, commander, 95th Civil Affairs Bde. "In the pursuit of what they believed, they made the ultimate sacrifice.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Melissa Sluss-Tiller and her daughter Hannah, and to Mrs. Cherise Hartman and her son Michael," he said. (Full statement)
Hartman, 27, was a native of Merced, Calif. He is survived by his pregnant wife Cherise of Rosamond, Calif., and their son Michael. He is also survived by his parents, Greg and Mikail Hartman of Merced. (bio)
Sluss-Tiller, 35, was from Ashland, Ky. He is survived by his wife, Melissa and daughter Hannah of Sanford, N.C., father Edward Tiller of Sevierville, Tenn., and mother and stepfather, Jane and Forest Blankenship also of Sanford. (bio)
Both Soldiers were civil affairs senior non-commissioned officers and had previously deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of the war on terror.
Stets, 39, is survived by his wife, Nina, and daughters, Jessica, December, and Rachael, of Fayetteville, N.C. He was a native of California. (bio)
This was his second deployment in support of OEF. He also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Stets was a senior psychological operations sergeant.
The incident is under investigation.

Defense officials quietly announced last week expanded US training in the Pakistani frontier.
"The new centers would supplement two already operating in Pakistan, and they would be used to accelerate and expand the training of Pakistani forces considered key to rooting out al-Qaida leaders hiding along the mountainous border, the official said.
"The plan would put U.S. forces closer to al-Qaida and Taliban insurgents, a carefully calibrated expansion of the military role inside Pakistan, where the terrorists are believed planning the next attacks against the United States.
"Staffing the new centers will require an increase in the more than 100 U.S. special operations forces in Pakistan for the training effort, but Pentagon officials do not yet know how much of a boost will be needed, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about internal discussions.
"U.S. officials see their effort to train Pakistan's forces, which includes the country's paramilitary Frontier Corps, its Special Service Group commandos and its Army, as a growing success.
. . .
"The plan to add more trainers may also depend on whether the U.S. can get visas from the Pakistani government — a diplomatic problem in recent months. Pakistan has held up visas for U.S. diplomats, military service members and others, apparently because of hostility within the country toward the expansion of U.S. operations there."
