How about listing your favorites as follows:

1. "Everyday" beer -- what you stock in the fridge when there is no special occasion.

2. "Special" beer -- you don't drink it everyday, but you love it, you drink a lot of it, and you'll order this when you go out or have it available when you're entertaining or whatever.

3. "Extraordinary" beer -- you don't have this often, but you think it's the best.

You can have more than one per category. OK, go. :)

#1- Goose Island Hex Nut Brown Ale

#2- DogFish Head 90 minute IPA

#3- Hard to answer as there are so many choices.
Bells Expedition Stout, DogFish Head 120 Minute, Three Floyd's Alpha King, New Belgium Tripple, Chimay Cinq Cents, Ommegang Hennepin are just a few I can think of.

"Life's to short to drink crap!"

What do Miller Lite and sex in a canoe have in common?

I was just remembering the good old days logging the old growth around Mt. Hood when the big selection was between Blitz and Oly. The closest Coors was south of the border down in California.

Things have changed a little since then.

Around the knife shop Bud can be occasionally found and the only Bud "light" here is when the can is empty.

For nicer occasions we keep some local brewed beers like Black Butte Porter or Obsidian Stout from the Deschutes Brewing Co. over in Bend Oregon. Also the Full Sail beers are pretty good.
These are all local purchases which is pretty good considering this location.

Best occasion around Christmas, Alaskan Brewing Company's Winter Ale. Remember, this is a knife shop...few exotic imports.

This thread also reminds me I owe Rogue lawyer a 6 pack of Moose Drool to pay a betting debt. I use that stuff to quench steel in.

I'm such a drinker that I can - once or twice a month - drink two whole beers in an evening. It's such an occasion that I usually drink draft. :D

If I do buy, I buy what I really want: Mac and Jack's African Amber (WA), Hook and Ladder Backdraft Brown (MD), Longboard Amber (HI), or - if they aren't available - Newcastle Brown Ale.

The other half drinks Guinness.

Excellent stuff. There are a couple of other local breweries in the Phoenix area that make it as well, I'm checking to see if any of the NW ones do as well (Deschutes, Full Sail, etc..). If I could figure out a way to send some up that way without it going flat I would. Everyone needs to try this. A dark beer, but does not taste like your average dark at all.

We plan to buy 2 to 3 kegs when its available.

The ICB is actually a shotglass half-full of Jameson's with a half-shot of Bailey's floated on it, then you drop it into a pint of Guinness stout and chug it all down without stopping. If you don't drink it fast enough, it will curdle, though.

Hey you Aussies; where's the Foster?

Special: Old Frothingschloss ("The Pale, Stale Ale; the Beer with the Head On the Bottom"). Brewed by that very definition of world class hops processors - Iron City. It was brewed and canned every Christmas and it was adorned with photos of very select bathing beauties (Oh Yeah). Caution this is only for the most discriminating palates.

Depending on which version of brewing history you believe, Alexander Kieth is credited with the "invention" of the IPA which stands for India Pale Ale. The IPA is named such as it was a beer brewed specifically to withstand the harsh conditions onboard ships on their voyage from the UK/Europe to India where the British had troops stationed. The product was supposed to be blended once on station but it apparently did not happen and a new style was born.

Q,
You have great taste in beverages! Speaking of Northwest beers, it's official, Portland now has more breweries than any other city on this planet.

Negra Modelo is served (in glasses just out of the freezer) down the road at the very fine Mexican place we have here locally. :lifter

You have prompted a question, what does the little plastic device inside the Guinness bottles actually do? I broke one out last night for inspection and can't figure out it's function.

Negro Modelo is a Vienna Lager style beer. Many of the lagers you find through central/south America were influenced heavily by the Germans. You will find a lot of Vienna and Marzen style beers down South as well you will run into the occassional Schwarzbier (Black Lager).

Back when I ran the family liquor store, I drank them all.

I had to know my merchandise, and besides, PsychoBitch From Hell was pregnant with my son. It later turned out that she was bipolar, but who knew?

Anyway, my favorite was Sapporo in the large steel cans stuck in a snow drift on the balcony. That was my everyday beer.

When I was in the mood for something a little stiffer, I preferred Sheaf Stout.

When it was time to celebrate, then Chimay was the poison of choice.

Been a long time since I partook.

If you like Victory's Hop Wallop you should check out the 90 Minute and/or the 120 Minute IPA's from DogFish Head out of Delaware. The 90 & 120 Minute are two of their versions of what is called a Double IPA or I2PA which is also what Hop Wallop would be. Be mindful though if you go for the 120 Minute as it is 21% Alcohol while the 90 comes in at 9%.

Another I2PA that you might be able to get in the PA area is the Dreadnaught IPA from Three Floyd's out of Indiana. They also have another beer called "Alpha King", which is not an I2PA but if you like hops this beer has won the Hop King Challenge several times in a row.

Chimay is indeed a fine beer. Made by the Trappiist Monks at the Chimay Monestary it is one of only 6 in Belgium and 1 in The Netherlands (out of 171 Trappist Monasteries) that produce beer. Trappist beers are some of the best on the planet and are a must for anyone to try. Of course they can be cost prohibitive so one a day or so is about the limit. They will set you back about $7 for a liter or $20 for a 6-pack of 12oz bottles in most places.

Of course having the proper stem ware to serve these beers is essential. While most beer will taste fine in a pint glass, like wine great beer needs a glass that will help emphasize it's flavor, color and aroma.

Chimay also has a line of cheeses that are very tasty, again a bit on the $$$ side.

Here is a wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trappist_beer) on the trappist monasteries for those interested.

Like the chow and the black sand beaches. That whole darn area is still unstable........I like it that way.....more fun. Guatemala is probably the worst of them all and it used to be pretty tame. My brother in law did a few weeks in Belize, tried to talk him out of it, last time I seen that place it was without a doubt the nastious place. But nooooooo he goes anyway. Turns out they have gone touristy and cleaned the place up....some. El Sal may get going again I guess the Sandanistas are trying to take over again....same guys....legally. Well anyway, back to the subject at hand. Big German influence all over Central and So. America which means you can find some real good beers and of course the chow in Central America is Grand. I should be a tourist monger!!! Bye ya'll, "Q". PS: Magician are you a member of the 46th SFCA Association?? The Director lives near Pattaya?

Chimay is indeed a fine beer. Made by the Trappiist Monks at the Chimay Monestary it is one of only 6 in Belgium and 1 in The Netherlands (out of 171 Trappist Monasteries) that produce beer.

We are departing for the Netherlands this Wed, I will have to try the Chimay. I don't remember having done so in the past.

I would be looking to China and Japan in the next 5-10 years, especially China, to be putting out some very good beers. They have been buying up brewpub equipment left and right from the states (it is dirt cheap after the late 90's when a good number of pubs went under after the boom was over) as well they have been bringing in American and German trained brewers to show them how to use the equipment. The Chinese have been hiring American and German trained brewers left and right to come in and show them what is what and once they figure it out and start to feel a bit adventurous you will see the results.

The Chinese I expect to be putting out some serious amounts of beer as well as a good number of their products will probably be made with a soy base. I have had a few soy beers and surprisingly they have a very clean taste. One small brewer in my area is actually exporting (they are the first US Brewery to do so) a soy based beer they are making to China.

Africa is also putting out some good beers and for those who have or know someone with Coeliac you should have them try beer brewed using only Sorghum. It is either VERY low in gluten or has no gluten in the final product depending on whether they used any other cereal grains. A good number of African breweries are making them and with SAB (South African Breweries) having bought our Miller awhile back that means some of those beers are making it to the US market.

Hey, are we talkin' Asian Beer?? Sounds familiar. I remember Running Deer, Some of the Thai beers in the litre bottles. Now sold in the states and I'll be darned if I can remember the name (too much beer I suppose). Yeah, the Germans got around didn't they? Brewmonkey could probably talk for hours on that one. Only makes since, if you want good beer call a German to help you get it going. I did get ahold of some beer in Kenya, I think some of the guys have already mentioned it. White Star is one. The beer was real good but you had to know how to drink it. I think it is the only beer I've drank with chunks of something in the bottom. Now I've gotten some in other places with a little residue in the bottom but this African stuff was like a ball of slim. You stayed sober 'cuz you were afraid of swollowing it. Plus we were making nice with the Masai Tribesmen, nice guys! "Q".

If you are ever in a pinch and need to cool down beer, or any other liquid for that matter, quickly.

All you need is a bucket large enough to fit what you are cooling, some ice and rock salt (if possible but any salt will work), water and a CO2 fire extinguisher or a 5lb CO2 cylinder. Fill the bucket with water and add some ice and about a cup or two of the salt. Place the extinguisher or cylinder in the water and then discharge it. As we all know as CO2 is expelled from it's compressed form it will give off COLD energy which will then cool the beer down in just a few minutes (about 2 or 3).

edit- I have found the if you have a CO2 cylinder around it works best. They will last MUCH longer then a fire extinguisher and can be used many times before they are empty, unlike a fire extinguisher. As well using a fire extinguisher to cool your beer may leave you in a pinch at a future time.

Out at the "Forward Launch Site", before the "Guns" left for home, we'd pull several 2.75s from the tubes and stack beer cans into them. Then they'd take off, climb up to a good/cold altitude for a few minutes and bring the beer back down to us. We'd push the cans into mermac containers to keep it cold and we'd have a few brews to drink while we watched the sun set over Laos!!

Licher Hefe-weizen. Pretty much any hefe-weizon.

A good Bavarian Hefe is good, when they are served at the proper temp and sans lemons. A font of phenolics from clove to bubble gum and all those other wonderful aromas and flavors make them great on a hot day.

However in the past years a turn from the German strain of yeast, Weihenstephan, to another "wheat beer strain" in the US has left a second style called an "American Hefe" which is less bubble gum and more clove/spice flavor. Reminiscent of a Belgian Wit more then a Hefe I find them an abomination of the style and a big reason many here in the U.S. seem to turn their nose when offered a proper Hefe as they see the phenolic aspect as an "off flavor."

The GREAT thing about a Hefe is that it is the quickest beer you can make because it does not need to be filtered or even fined (gelatin or isinglass) to clear it out. Due to the high level of phenols in the beer even a young beer does not have that "green" flavor other might if served as early as a Hefe may be.

Most ales require at least 14 days from grain to glass but a hefe can be turned out in 7-8 days easily when in a pinch. A lot of pub brewers who get caught short in their brewing cycle, which happens when a beer is more popular then anticipated, will throw a Hefe into primary to buy them some time.

Widmer should be on a lot more store shelves in the near future. When I was at their main brewery back in 2002 I was in awe! For such a "small" brewery they have a HUGE system. They brewed in 2 batches what it took me 100 batches to make! They have a 250bbl brewhouse and can run it 24/7 if they needed to and pump out about 2000bbls a day easily (that is 4,000 kegs or about 52,000 cases).

A few years back they entered into a distro contract with Anheuser Busch which gives them access to everyone of the AB distributers in the country as well as premium shelf space, very similar to what Red Hook did many years ago. I suspect that as the Widmer Bros. start to get their labels approved in the various states you will be able to find them outside the PNW/West Coast.

Check out beeradvocate.com or ratebeer.com. They both have a search feature and should let you narrow it down to the region of the country that you will be located. Check out the local breweries no matter where you are and I will bet that you will find great beer. Be prepared though because unlike in the states where a brewery will have 6-12 beers they brew most German brewhouses will have between 1-3 they brew, a Pils, A Vienna/Munich Lager and maybe a Shwarzbier if your lucky. They will all be good though!

Optimator is a Doppelbock and a classic example of the style. If you like that beer you should check out Ayinger's Celebrator as well as Salvator Dopple. For a decent one made here in the US check out Sam Adams Dopplebock. While I do not care for some of their other beers they have done a bangup job on this one.

For those in NH check out Smuttynose brewing, in the Ohio area check out Great Lakes Brewing (The Instigator), and for those in the San Diego/Carlsbad areas check out Pizza Port Brewing for their C U Later Dopplebock, Chicago area check out Goose Island, Delaware & Pennsylvania check out the Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant . For the Pizza Port beers you may see them in bottles soon as they have purchased the old Stone Brewing Co. facilites in San Marcos (after Stone vacated for their new brewhouse down the road). For those of you in the PNW check out Widmer Bros Dopple.

Another import that is decent would be Hacker-Pschorr Animator Dopplebock. Many are familiar with Hacker-Pschorrs Pils, which is one of the best, but their Dopple should certainly be tried if you can find it in the US.

Yeungling is the oldest continually operated brewery in the US and while they are a big operation you can still call and find one of the Yuenglings answering the phone. Boston Beer Co. was founded 1 year prior to Yuengling (1828 vs 1829) but there was a span of several years from the 70's through 1984 when Jim Koch bought the company that the doors were closed and no beer was brewed.

Molson Coors Brewing owns the oldest label, Molson, in North America.

Actually no fruit in beer is ok unless it is a Lambic style like a Pecehe (Peach), Framboise (Raspberry), Kriek (Cherry), Cassis (Currants) and a few other less popular variety of fruits and even then only from certain breweries. Lambics are only able to be made in one area of Belgium, Payottenland, as they are spontaneously fermented by allowing the wort to be exposed to the open air where in only that small region of the world a special wild yeast strain will ferment the beers.

They have cultivated this strain and do sell it but even then the beers are not quite the same as what you would get from that region.

Leaving a beer out in the sunlight (or any UV light including indoor lamps) in a clear glass bottle/growler like that will cause the beer to become lightstruck. It is why the majority of beers are packaged in amber(brown) bottles as the UV rays cannot affect the contents the same as green, blue or clear glass.

Lightstruck is that flavor (skunk) that you get from beers like Corona, St. Pauli Girl, Grolsch and many others. It can happen quickly too, under 5 minutes in many cases, for the beer to be ruined. If you have beer from a pub in glass other then amber(brown) it is best to keep it out of the sun or in a brown paper sack.

What happens is that the UV light reacts with the iso-alpha acids from the hops and they change their structure giving us that skunky smell/flavor. These iso-acids are also the portion of the hops that give us bitterness in beer so it is not like we would be able to figure out how to extract them from the beer/process and still have the same product.

An interesting note though is that if the brewer use pre-isomerized acids, like MGD does (it comes in a clear bottle), you will not have the lightstruck issue. The problem with that is brewers in small pubs cannot afford to use those products (very expensive) and must go the old fashioned route of actually having to boil the hops for X amount of time to achieve bitterness, flavor & aroma.

Thanks for the info, Brewmonkey.

I don't know much about beer, except I never liked it until I was stationed in Germany and discovered the fresh stuff.

Upon requesting my celebratory end of the quarter pint (or 3) I inquired and was informed they (the brewpub I like to frequent) quit using growlers in anything but clear glass. The posted picture was taken to show off the excellent color (I do adore that red) and the background flag. Whereupon it (the growler) was whisked away to the fridge until called upon for pouring duties.

I shall endeavor to exercise more care in the handling of these fresh products. And of course, shall commence a lengthy and detailed testing of the lightstruck issue on my taste buds. If, of course I can even tell the difference...

A quick question: How does the UV interaction with the acids differ from the heat from boiling interaction? Does it have to do with the difference between the finished product and just the grain?

LL

brewmonkey
06-04-2006, 07:54
The heat does not act on the isomerized acids, it creates them. When the hops are added to the kettle it is so that the alpha acids contained in the hops can be isomerized (the alpha acids then become iso-alpha acids) and impart the bitterness. Once they are isomerized by the boil they can then become lightstruck by UV light.

Ok, I think I understood most of that. Thanks Brewmonkey!

She told me we couldn't afford beer anymore and I'd have to quit.

Then I caught her spending $65.00 on make-up, and I asked how come I had to give up stuff and she didn't.
She said she needed the make-up to look pretty for me.
I told her that was what the beer was for.
I don't think she's coming back.

Thanks for the info, Brewmonkey.

I don't know much about beer,

From my limited experience with beer, I consider the most important aspect of beer, is opening the bottle. From there the rest is down the gullet.

I heard recently, IIRC on NPR, that there is an ingredient in beer that helps to prevent prostate cancer. However, to reach the effective dosage, one would have to drink seventeen beers daily.

They said that like they though it was a bad thing. :D

There are also some qualities of beer (especially darker beers) that help prevent cancer, the same as red wines. Flavonoids, which are found in dark beers and red wines are anti-oxidants and have been proven beneficial in preventing cancer based on several studies that have been done.

There are also some anti-oxidants in hops, which are a required ingredient in beer in the US, which means that all beers to some extent will have anti-oxidant properties. Of course some beers have very little hops while others have more then their fair share. Beers like IPA's, Barley Wines and Imperial Stouts are very heavy on the hops to balance the large amounts of malt used. Beers like Imperial Stouts also use roasted/higher kilned malts which also lend flavonoids to the beer making them that much higher in those anti-oxidants.

Some studies show that just as a glass or two of wine each day can be beneficial, beer can also provide the same results.

Mmmmmmmmmm... Barleywine and Imperial Stouts sound so delicious right now. Beer syrup. I may have to make a run after work. Too bad they're both in such short supply in most liquor stores.

Just make sure you drink your coffee too, it's supposed to limit the effects of alcohol on the liver, with a loading dose of 17 beers, you'll need the caffiene anyway. What good soldier doesn't like both beer and coffee, especially now that they're good for you!

We tried this last night at a restaurant. As we were waiting in the bar for our table, I noticed this on the taps and thought it rang a bell from this thread. Served ice-cold from the tap in a Chimay glass - wow, what a beer. Thanks magician and Brew.

I didn't read the entire thread, so the answer may be staring me in the face...But, since I have grown too fat, what "skinny" beers, lowered caloric content are recommended?

I had a couple of Becks Light on a flight recently, fairly wimpy taste, but at 64 calories...

Depending what I am trying to accomplish:

Coors light/Lonestar light/Miller light:GP hot weather swill.

Heineken light/Shiner light: these I am pretty much indifferent, take it or leave it.

My favorite is Amstel light for actual drinking purposes, the previous mentioned are just fodder.

My .02, YMMV

Good Times,
Blake

Also:

Bought a "minikeg" of Paulaner Oktoberfest amber ale last friday; Two thumbs up (at least I think this way is up)

Beck Made a very nice Near beer. I think it was named Haack. A friend, because of health issues drank the stuff, introduced it to me. It is great on a hot day when one has to work with machinery, reloading, shooting. Very refreshing with out the worry of loosing body parts.

I really love the taste of water so I stay away from water that tastes like beer.

OOPS! Thanks for the info, Christophe. I should've known, when I asked the bartender is this the beer brewed by the Trappist Monks, and he responded with a blank stare. I remarked to my wife, that's OK, I'll just go back to this thread and get the real skinny!:)

I saw the Chimay at the local Total Wine store over the weekend, and I should probably pick up some and try it at the proper temperature. However, and this will probably get me banned from this thread, after working in London for a summer several years ago, I told myself I'm never drinking near-room temperature beer again.:D

1- Warsteiner/Radler if it is a hot day

2- Most local breweries in Germany make a pretty good Pils

3 - Hefeweisen

Has anybody here aver been to Brisbane Australia and had Castlemaine XXXX Lager? The Aussies called it lunitic stew. It won't make any gourmet beer lists but I really liked it. At least I thnk I liked it. I don't really have clear memories of that time. I did discover that if you go to a bar in Brisane and order a Fosters people will look at you funny. I never saw an Australian drinking fosters and eventually someone told me that the only peoplein Australia who drink Fosters are old men from the country and American Tourists.

1. Westmuller Double (dark)

2. Westmuler Triple (light beer but higher alcohol content)

3. Westvleteren I haven't had this one yet as the monks have quite selling for a while, but I will reserve a case as soon as they start selling again. I am told the 12% beer they make is out of this world.

And when I say light I don't mean the calories. The joke is there's a loaf of bread in every bottle.

Hmmmm all this beer talk is making me thirsty. I think I'll go have a Westmuller. Man do I love Europe!:D

It is not "room temp" it is "Cellar temp" which should be closer to 52-55F. Too warm and you will have just as nasty a beer as too cold. Cellar temps allow for the perfect combination of all the ingredients of the beer to come together and give you what the brewer intended. At those temps the complexity of the malts will astound and the wonderful aroma/flavors will make you wish you had time to drink beer all day long. The next thing you know you will want to run a brewery...

TS, most beers in Utah are 3.2% abv but I think in-state breweries can go up to 4%.
Most Utahns go out of state and bring better beer in with them.

I'm finding that most any beer imported from Belgium is the best (just way more expensive). Higher alcohol content (7-10%) but great taste unlike barley wines. We have John's Market here in Portland, OR that has the biggest beer selection I've ever seen. Have to make solo trips there as the family always asks "Can we leave yet?"

I have a buddy that grew up not too far from Latrobe. He said Rolling Rock was the cheap beer they drank when money was tight.

When they start selling Narragansett as a premium out there, let me know; I'll set up a distribution center for free, just to get that crap out of New England!

Man this one takes me back to RAF Mildenhall prior to the GWOT. At a little hotel bar right outside the gate (actually between the base and the flight line). The bartender added a shot of black current cordial. It was so good I forgot to ask how it was made and had to come back months later for another taste. Widmer Bros., a Portland Oregon brewing company has a very nice amber ale, Drop Top.

I like Guiness, but it has to be on draught. The cans and bottles just didn't do it.

I tried Corona when it was the rage in the 80's. It had that "peculiar" aftertaste and I wanted to know what caused it, so I sent a sample to a friend at a lab, without telling him what it was - just asked to have it analyzed. He called me a week later and said, "Your horse has diabetes.":)

Fat Tire is good beer for a light beer (color). Once you get onto the micro brews regular beer is like water. Traditional lagers, pilsners and ales are so thin - like stone soup! Good after a long dirty day of hard work with a buddy but not good for much else.

I knew I was in trouble, recently, when I had a Guinness and thought, "Gee, this tastes kind of watery."

I will say, I enjoy a good "Truck beer" with friends. Hey, I like beer.

Fosters......The best!

Fosters is, indeed the BEST.
But for once a year enjoyment, try "Old Frothingshloss", "The pale. stale ale; the beer with the head on the bottom." It's canned by that Brewer of, none other than, Iron City (so you Western PA guys should know about this). Each year they have a different figure on the can, usually an AMPLE bathing beauty with a circa 1920 bathing suit. The cans have become real collector's items. The beer? Oh well, Iron City says it all.

There not even an American owner brewery any longer...

Could not get me to drink it if my teeth were on fire.

Now based on a good dose of the answers I have seen I have my work cut out for me. With all the wonderful brewpubs, microbreweries(not the same as a brewpub actually) and Regional Specialties out there, there is no reason to be drinking macro swill. In fact many brewers in small pubs have the same exact training as many of the guys at the big guys, I know guys running small 2,000bbl breweries (that's 4,000 kegs a year in production) who have PhD's in fermentation science and many of the others I know were schooled by the American Brewers Guild (http://www.abgbrew.com/) or Siebels (http://www.siebelinstitute.com/) in Chicago. Even know a few who made it through Heriott-Watt Universities (http://www.hw.ac.uk/home/) tough ass 4 year degree program.

The problem is that for close to 4 generations now Americans have been told that the offerings from companies like AB, Coors and so on are what real beer is when in fact those are styles that did not really exist until after Prohibition. Those companies used to make products like you would find if you went to Czechoslovakia and order a true Pilsener, which in the U.S. would now be akin to what we know as a Pre-Prohibition Lager.

I can't believe how many people mentioned Corona. Zonie hit it on the head- it is not Mexico's best.
In Mexico, Pacifico is my first choice. After a day of fishing in the hot golfo sun a bucket of iced Pacificos and a large bowl of ceviche, watching the sunset is about as good as it gets. Carta Blanca and Sol are good if Pacifico is not availabe. Dos Equis is tasty, espcially with Tacos de cahuama, Modelo if Dos Equis is not available. Tecate is like Budweiser in Mexico. Actually, not that bad.

U.S- Coors original.

Thailand- Singha. Put them in the freezer until ice forms on the bottle. Chang is good. Someone mentioned Running Deer- It is actually a Thai Whiskey. It makes Mekong taste like 18 year old Chivas...

Right arm, Mark!

Neighbors are coming over later. I've been told he drinks beer. I couldn't decide what he might like, so I bought six packs of Pacifico (lo mejor) and Dos Equis (Obscura). I almost bought the new Bohemia (Obscura), but wimped out. (If he doesn't like 'em, he'd better have brought his own. I won't get stuck drinking crappy beer!)

Where the lime in Mexican beer started, I don't know - but I wish it would stop. I think it started big-time when Corona got popular (to cover the taste). Prior to that, the only Mexican beer I was ever served with a lime in it was Tecate. I was told it was because Tecate was brewed to have a tequila-like taste. (It was what we all drank with our Mexican food at the "Club Cafe" on old Route 66 in Santa Rosa, NM during Open Water Certification dive weekend trips to the Blue Hole back in the mid- to late-80's.)

My first Mexican beer was Modelo (Clara) at the Cholla Bay Sportsman's Club in Rocky Point, Mexico in 1965. My uncle bought it for me - I was almost 16), with his famous words, "Don't tell your mom (his big sister) about this!"

It was love at first sip!

All that said... if you're buying - I'm drinking...except Schlitz.:D
