Note: "Christmas," 1551, X'temmas, wherein the X is an abbreviation for Christ in Christmas, from first letter of Gk. Christos "Christ". The earlier way to abbreviate it was Xp- or Xr-, corresponding to "Chr-," and the form Xres męsse for "Christmas" appears in the "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" (c.1100). ;)

Remembering all those times and places Christians were - and are - persecuted, the X is more than an abbreviation. As Richard pointed out, it has historical context from the Greek. It is also the spelling in Russian, "Христос."

In the same way early Christians used the drawing of a fish for meeting places, Russians under communism used an X. And the earliest Christian blessing was crossed fingers (as we do for luck). They meant it as Christ's blessing to each other -- symbolizing both the cross and Christ. The power of both in one symbol being significant.

So the cross, the X, from St Andrew's cross to a symbol for Christ when secrecy was required, is a revered symbol in many places. To this day, Russians will wrap presents in paper marked XP for Christ is born.

It was a great video -- thank you for sharing it and the English history, Richard... and Happy Christmas!
