Marc W. Herold
Associate Professor of Economic Development & Women's Studies

Fields of Specialization:

Third-world economic development; Brazil; civilian casualties of modern air wars; women and development; international studies; postmodernism; political economy

Education:

Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley
M.B.A., University of California, Berkeley
B.S., Swiss Federal Polytechnic University

I have frequently been asked (and criticized) why a development economist should be concerned or know anything about, civilian casualties of war? My answer has been that in some thirty years of teaching and researching about the Third World my focus has been upon how “development” has affected the everyday lives of people. Sadly, such development has created an “economic body count.” My interest in civilian casualties explores how modern wars result in a “war body count,” severely affecting the everyday lives of simple, innocent people struggling to survive. The very same point has recently been made by the former chief economist of the World Bank, Joseph Stiglitz, in his Globalization and Its Discontents (New York: W.W. Norton, 20002) on p. 24.

Educated at Berkley and in the E.U.? How incrediby surprised I am that he might have a negative view of the U.S. military...

(W.M. where is that sarcasm key we were talking about? Oh...there it is.)

I love the "30 years of teaching and researching" that screams of "I've never ACTUALLY done any of that or BEEN there...but I AM an expert."

For anyone following some of the threads of the past 6 months - many of us here have adopted the use of pink = sarcasm - e.g.:

How incrediby surprised I am that he might have a negative view of the U.S. military...

It's the color choice found in the lower left corner of the font 'Colors' pull-down option.

Has anyone else noticed the bored snarl our Dear Leader shows whenever he's in the presence of any military person? I'd hate to know what he thinks of his USMC staff on board USMC-1. Of course, perhaps he's just being overly respectful when he snarls at people willing to die for his ass. Maybe that's the "Chicago Mystique". I guess my parents raised me the wrong way.

You have been attributed as being the father of "Sacastic Pink" or is it "Pink Sarcasm"... :D

Actually - it was nmap who first suggested it and some of us picked up on it pretty readily - my being attributed as its originator probably came about from being - perhaps - the most frequently sarcastic poster and, therefore, the greatest abuser of the idea.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :p

Nice sweater vest...

I think the pink is redundant in this case :D Because can you TRULY say "nice sweater vest" and NOT be sarcastic....?
