Couple slips though security to crash state dinner

WASHINGTON – Crashing a state dinner at the White House apparently takes a security breakdown as well as some kind of nerve.

The Secret Service is looking into its own security procedures after determining that a Virginia couple, Michaele and Tareq Salahi, managed to slip into Tuesday night's state dinner at the White House even though they were not on the guest list, agency spokesman Ed Donovan said.

President Barack Obama was never in any danger because the party crashers went through the same security screening for weapons as the 300-plus people actually invited to the dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Donovan said.

Donovan confirmed the identities of the couple. The Washington Post, which first reported on their evening out, said the Salahis were well-known in the Virginia horse-country set and were being considered for the Bravo reality TV show "Real Housewives of D.C."

In an interview with the "CBS Early Show" in September, Michaele Salahi said, "President Obama has made it very accessible for anyone to visit the White House, so that's like a big thing right now."

The CBS interview was part of a segment on potential candidates for "Real Housewives of D.C." but never was aired.

The Secret Service learned about the security breach Wednesday after a media inquiry prompted by the Salahis' online boasts about having attended the private event, Donovan said.

One of the many photos from the dinner posted on Michaele Salahi's Facebook page shows the couple with a smiling Vice President Joe Biden. In other photos, they appear alone or together with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty, CBS News anchor Katie Couric, Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., and three Marines in their dress blues.

Donovan would not comment on whether the couple had been contacted by the Secret Service, how long they were on the White House grounds or other details of the investigation.

The Post said uninvited guests who got in could face a potential trespassing charge unless someone from inside the White House staff slipped them in.

Donovan would not comment on possible legal violations.

The agency's Office of Professional Responsibility was reviewing what occurred. An initial finding indicated that a checkpoint did not follow proper procedures to ensure the two were on the guest list, Donovan said.

"It's important to note that they went through all the security screenings — the magnetometer screening — just like all the other guests did," Donovan said. And, he added, Obama and others under Secret Service protection had their usual security details with them at the dinner.

Maybe I'm stretching things a bit, but I'm wondering which guest-list they weren't on. The copy that the media was given or the official copy? If I'm understanding the tranliteration of this name correctly, I believe the first name is "Pathway" (common Muslim name) and last name is "One who prays". We'll see how this gets spun, but I still have my suspicions.

EDIT: So I decided to satisfy my curiosity. This gets more interesting than what I'm seeing from AP. First, I tried looking him up to get a home county to check a few records. No results. So I tried some common transliterations of what believe his name is in Arabic. I found one "Tarek Salehi" in VA, two addresses but only one phone number. I won't post it here since I can't confirm it is indeed the same individual. Whitepage search it if you want it. So, armed with a plausible secondary spelling and two possible addresses, I went to look his property in the Rockingham, VA county records. Strangely enough, none of the listed names or even the addresses given in the whitepages show up in the county records search. Coincidence? Maybe, I'm too far out there to accept that. But, it does get weirder.

Next, I run across this article from "Kabob Fest", calling him the "coolest Arab of the moment", and identifying him as part of the American Task Force on Palestine.

http://www.kabobfest.com/2009/11/tarek-salahi-coolest-arab-of-the-moment.html

As the article mentions, he has been removed from their site. I also found a blank page that dates back at least to NOV 4th with the heading "Tareq Salahi".

Lucky for us Google has quite the caching program. Here are links.

While the big gun media and American Secret Service are out there investigating “party crashers” Tareq and Michaele Salahi, no one’s telling the truth: Obama knew the Salahis when he was still an Illinois senator.

Polo Contacts Worldwide could make it easy for the investigating Secret Service by brown-enveloping them this picture ....

Interesting little detail for White House gumshoes: As the above photo was published in June 2005, Barack Obama was still Senator Obama and not the President Elect.

Obie is just FULL of surprises, isn't he. I'm wondering how many dems really understand what they did by voting for him.

Did White House “Gatecrashers” Have Ties to Obama?

By Roger Aronoff
Monday, November 30, 2009
While the major media have bought the official storyline about the so called White House gatecrashers, could there be more to this scandal? The mainstream media have ignored obvious holes in the story and important facts about the alleged gatecrashers. Not only did they pose for a previous photo with Barack Obama, one of them, Tareq Salahi, has ties to some of the same radical Arab interests that backed Obama.

WorldNetDaily reports that Tareq Salahi served on the board of the American Task Force for Palestine (ATFP), where Columbia University Professor Rashid Khalidi served as vice president. Khalidi was a close friend and associate of Obama. Judi McLeod of the Canada Free Press has a Google cache identifying Tareq Salahi as a member of the ATFP....

The brazen White House party crashers met the President months before they waltzed into the A-list state dinner and now they're seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars for their story.

A photograph from an America's Polo Cup party in May shows Tareq and Michaele Salahi hobnobbing with President Obama, Randy Jackson and the Black Eyed Peas.

The photo was taken during Tareq Salahi's America's Polo Cup fashion show - known as Rockin' the Runway, the Huffington Post reported....

Defense official communicated with WH crashers
December 1, 2009

EILEEN SULLIVAN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The couple who crashed the Obama administration's first state dinner communicated with a senior Pentagon official about going to the event, but the official denies that she helped the couple get in.

Michele Jones, a special assistant to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, said in a written statement issued through the White House on Monday evening that she never said or implied she would get Michaele and Tareq Salahi into the Nov. 24 White House dinner.

"I specifically stated that they did not have tickets and in fact that I did not have the authority to authorize attendance, admittance or access to any part of the evening's activities," Jones said. "Even though I informed them of this, they still decided to come."

This is the latest twist in the unfolding mystery of how the two reality show wannabes managed to get into the highly secured event and shake hands with President Barack Obama. Also on Monday, a House committee chairman asked the couple, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan and White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers to testify at a hearing Thursday on the incident.

In a similar incident a month before, the Salahis sneaked in through a back entrance to a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Awards dinner at which Obama spoke. A guest complained that the couple didn't belong at his table.

My concern is that for the second time in less than a year, people who should not have had access to the American president did.

I understand that perfect security is impossible. Yet, I cringe to think what might have happened had these attention whoring asshats not been content just to throw shoes or to point a skank at the President of the United States.

Let me be clear. I cannot think of an American living or dead whom I hold in greater contempt than the current president. Even so, my seventh grade home room teacher, a liberal, put it best as he restrained himself from assaulting a classmate who took pleasure in the assassination attempt on President Reagan, and shouted "THAT'S MY PRESIDENT!"

MOO, anyone who willfully evades or circumvents any current or former president's security detail should be treated as a mortal enemy of the republic.

YMMV.

My concern is that for the second time in less than a year, people who should not have had access to the American president did.

Agree with you. And Secret Service IS responsible (if they, in fact, weren't on "the list"). Regardless, a background check should have been run.

Let me be clear. I cannot think of an American living or dead whom I hold in greater contempt than the current president.

That's a pretty high bar [or low bar as it were].

Hasan and Maurice Clemmons come to mind. Unless you imply they renounced their American citizenship when they rejected our society and became traitors to it by turns arms against our own.

And given that the rogues galley of Muslim Brotherhood actors in this country don't consider themselves Americans,
your statement implies you don't either. Neither do I.

SO, he might be in the top ten list of least trusted. Some of the things he's said in the last 12 months constitute sedition. And his silent endorsement of others statements (Jerry Wright anyone?) are also reprehensible for someone who aspired to the highest office in the land.

And he needs to be shown the door by the American People as soon as possible. Realistically 2012 is about the best we can hope for right now. Barring a Republican landslide in 2010 followed by a scandal, impeachment isn't looking good.

In the mean time, guess we'll have to settle for the traditional American political evisceration with a President that polls under 50% and enjoys less than the support of the governed. Under ordinary circumstances, that would get the attention of the elected to right their course. But these are no ordinary times.

HOEKSTRA: Fort Hood shooting must be probed ASAP
Rep. Peter Hoekstra
Washington Times
OPINION/ANALYSIS:

Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's murderous rampage at Fort Hood last month that killed 13 was a wake-up call on the continuing threat to our nation from radical Islam and the growing problem of homegrown terrorism. We need to quickly launch a thorough investigation and congressional hearings to understand these threats and how to defend our nation from them.

Unfortunately, not only is there is a lack of urgency to investigate the Fort Hood, Texas, shooting from the Obama administration and congressional Democrats, but there has been a troubling refusal by Obama officials to acknowledge that the shooting likely was an act of homegrown terrorism.

How can it be that the House Committee on Homeland Security has launched an investigation and called hearings within a week to look into the couple who crashed a recent White House state dinner, yet a month after Fort Hood there has yet to be a single congressional hearing into the Fort Hood attack?

I fear that our nation is returning to the naive security outlook of Sept. 10, 2001, when radical Islamic terrorist attacks were considered law enforcement and criminal problems and not threats to our national security.

It is urgent that we immediately begin to better develop the record of the Fort Hood shooting as a possible case of homegrown terrorism and investigate the intelligence failures that prevented it from being detected. Americans underestimate the threat from homegrown terrorism. The president said it is inconceivable that this would happen in America. Wrong. It is not inconceivable and is a growing global problem that needs to be addressed.

During 2009, there were arrests of persons allegedly planning homegrown terrorist attacks in New York, Chicago, North Carolina and Atlanta. Russia recently has seen several alleged homegrown terrorism attacks, including a train bombing and an attack against a gas storage facility. There were horrific homegrown terrorist attacks in Madrid in 2004 and London in 2005. In 2006, 18 homegrown terrorists were arrested in Toronto. It has happened here and will happen again if we don't act. We cannot wish it away.

We need to understand how homegrown terrorism works if we are to identify and stop homegrown terrorists before they carry out acts of violence. How are al Qaeda leaders and other radical jihadists recruiting and radicalizing homegrown terrorists? A principle route seems to be the Internet. We know that Maj. Hasan was in contact via the Internet with radical Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and that Mr. al-Awlaki's sermons have influenced would-be homegrown terrorists in the United States and the terrorists who launched the deadly 2005 London subway bombings.

Mr. al-Awlaki, who was born in the U.S. and speaks perfect English, has been using his own Web page, social-networking sites such as Facebook, and e-mail to preach a message of violence to English speaking Muslims around the world. We need to better understand how Mr. al-Awlaki and other radical jihadist figures are using new technologies to recruit and communicate with their homegrown followers.

We also need to understand how radical Jihadist groups are being financed. It has been reported that Maj. Hasan sent money abroad to Islamic charities that reportedly support terrorism. How much funding are these so-called charities receiving from the U.S.? How much U.S. government funding is indirectly going to these groups? I don't know whether suspect Islamic charities are supporting radical jihadists such as Mr. al-Awlaki, but this is possibility that should be looked into.

An investigation of the drivers behind homegrown radical jihadists must be realistic and focused on the extremist ideas of radical jihadists leaders such as Mr. al-Awlaki, who recently posted a long article on the Internet stating his beliefs that the West is at war with Islam, that democracy is not Islamic, and that moderate Muslims are non-Muslims. Contrast this with the assertion by those who claim the Guantanamo Bay prison facility is a factor driving the radical Islamist ideology and that by closing this facility and trying its al Qaeda suspects in New York we will somehow tame radical jihadism. It is hard to understand the logic behind such a claim since radical jihadist ideology predates the Guantanamo facility by decades. Clearly Mr. al-Awlaki and other radical jihadists are not going to suddenly moderate their views because we closed the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The serious national security implications of the Fort Hood shooting concern both a possible homegrown terrorist attack and a likely failure of U.S. intelligence agencies to cooperate, yet Congress has done nothing to investigate and the Obama administration has stonewalled requests by individual members of Congress for information.

The Obama administration seems to forget that it is a requirement, not an option, for the executive branch to keep Congress fully and currently informed. Instead of a healthy discussion with Congress on why this horrible event occurred, we have something akin to pulling teeth to get even basic information. This is wrong and it makes me wonder what Congress will find when the layers are pulled back.

The Fort Hood shooting brings to the surface serious threats to our national security. These threats require three things from the president and congressional leaders: leadership, action and speed. We cannot wait for the next homegrown jihadist to strike.

• Rep. Peter Hoekstra, Michigan Republican, is ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

AP Exclusive: Tourists enjoy White House breakfast
By BEN EVANS, Associated Press Writer Ben Evans, Associated Press Writer
17 mins ago

WASHINGTON – It wasn't a state dinner, and they didn't crash it on purpose. Still, a Georgia couple who showed up at the White House a day early for a tour somehow wound up at an invitation-only breakfast with President Barack Obama and the first lady. It left the White House once again explaining how people who were not on an event guest list wound up being ushered into the presidential mansion anyway.

The improbable adventure of Harvey and Paula Darden, Obama supporters from Hogansville, Ga., took place on Veterans Day, two weeks before Virginia socialites Tareq and Michaele Salahi infamously crashed the Obamas' state dinner for the prime minister of India.

The Dardens mistakenly showed up a day early for a tour scheduled through their congressman.

The White House and Secret Service both said the Dardens went through the appropriate security screenings and were allowed into the breakfast as a courtesy because there were no public tours the day they arrived.

That explanation was news to Harvey Darden, 67, a retired pharmacist, who said he and his wife never were told about the breakfast. They thought they were simply starting their tour until they were ushered into the East Room, offered a buffet spread and told they'd be meeting the president.

"The further we got into the White House, the more surprised we were," Darden told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "My wife looked at me and I looked at her, and I said, 'You know, I don't know if we're in the right place.'"

They approached a White House aide with their concern that they had veered off course but were told to "just go with the flow," Darden said.
"I felt kind of funny because I was the only man in the room that wasn't dressed in a coat and tie," he added. "I was just a plain tourist."

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said agents performed the same screening procedures on the Dardens that were used for other breakfast guests: They checked the Dardens' names and did a criminal background check — steps that were not taken for the Salahis at the Nov. 24 state dinner.

Because the Dardens were able to pass Secret Service vetting, they were allowed to attend the breakfast for veterans as a "nice gesture," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said. He added that it's not unusual for White House staff to take people who are cleared in for tours to other events if there is space, including Marine One arrivals, East Room events and Rose Garden ceremonies.

Shapiro said the White House Office of Public Engagement, which Obama created to engage citizens in White House activities, was responsible for clearing in the Dardens, as well as the other breakfast guests. The social office handled admittance to the Indian state dinner.

On the morning the Dardens showed up, security officials working from a list of names began letting people inside. When the Dardens reached the checkpoint, they said they were told their names weren't on the list and were asked to present photo identifications and other information.

After waiting for agents to check their information, they were allowed in and directed into the East Room, where about 200 people were gathered for the breakfast.

The Dardens approached an aide who was mingling with guests.

"I told him, 'I don't think this is part of the White House tour,'" Darden said. "He said, 'No it's not. It's an invitation event for veterans.'"
The official, whose name and title Darden didn't remember, asked whether Darden was a veteran. Darden told him he was a Navy veteran, and the aide suggested he stay, Darden said.

So the Dardens served themselves at the buffet, and took their seats. Shortly thereafter, Barack and Michelle Obama arrived and began talking and getting photographs with guests at each table. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, also stopped by.

Darden said it was "quite a treat" to meet the Obamas and the Bidens. But he remains puzzled about how he was escorted into a private breakfast — and he grew a little anxious after the Salahi episode exploded in the news.

The couple's only regret, Darden said, is that they haven't received a copy of that picture taken with the Obamas
