General Thanksgiving
By the PRESIDENT [George Washington]
of the United States Of America
A PROCLAMATION

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be;

That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation;

For the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war;

For the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;

For the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general,

For all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;

To enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually;

To render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed;

To protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and

To bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally

To grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

G. Washington

1789 - 2009...Oh how far we have wandered in 220 years.

To render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed;

To protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and

I do maintain that I continue to be thanful for this great country in which I have been blessed to be a citizen of. In spite of all the issues that confront us there is no other nation I would want to claim as my own.

I suppose that would explain my frustration and downright anger over those who would erase, ignore or apologize for our history and heritage.

Yes - we have much to be thankful for.

The local grocery store had a special - turkeys for 40 cents per pound with the purchase of $10 worth of other things. Such abundance, when compared to most of human history...and most places, even today...is both amazing and humbling.

And, I am thankful for the men and women who have sacrificed (and are sacrificing) so much to protect and defend our nation and its people. Thank you, soldiers and past soldiers.

I'll echo Teddy's sentiments. As one who has been away from home on holidays, I'll say the one I missed being home for the most was Thanksgiving. Relatives over... lots of food... start eating at 10 or so... leftovers out the wazoo...

To those who serve and are not home with their loved ones - please know that this "old guy" appreciates your sacrifice, understands "where you are coming from," and salutes you for your service to your country.

That more felt what you feel...

While we as a nation have much to be thankful for, I am struck with the magnitude of how much we take for granted.

As I gather with my family this Thanksgiving, one chair will be empty, awaiting the return of our son from his current deployment. As we share our meal we will once again recount countless funny stories of times shared, including him in the conversation as if he were here with us. We will feel an equal measure of pride, for who he is and what he is doing; and the pang of separation, which inevitably resides with military families.

We will wonder where he is. Is he warm? Is he able to sleep? Will he have time on this day to even turn a thought towards home? And most of all, is he safe?

We know we are not alone. Similar thoughts will be present at the tables of tens of thousand of military families this Thanksgiving day.

But if you are one of those in service to our country, separated from your family this day, know that we love you; we pray for your daily; we are immensly proud of you; and that we need you home with us again, as soon as your duty is done. And please, do whatever is necessary to make it back home to us.

For all who have served, know that we are grateful for all you do and have done, and the countless sacrifices you have made to serve and protect all of us back home.

Happy Thanksgiving, and may God Bless you all.

I'll be spending time with the patients in our children's cancer and bone marrow transplant ward this morning. Due to the H1N1 epidemic most of their families cannot visit over the holiday.:(

I'm fortunate enough to go home at the end of the morning and drive down to my folks' place to break bread with my family.

Here's to everyone who can't be with family and/or friends for the holiday - whatever the circumstances.

An interesting bit of reflection on the idea of Thanksgiving in America. ;)

My wife and I will go into Dallas this morning for the annual Turkey Trot (we only do the 5k run - age, you know) and then gather with relatives around 1600 for food, family, and football - Cowboys football. :D

Personally - Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday as it celebrates - for my family anyway - the rewards of life in America and the family. :)

Happy Thanksgiving to all - and THANKS to all who are serving our nation wherever you may be.

Celebrate Thanksgiving The Ayn Rand Way
Debi Ghate, CSM, 25 Nov 2009

Ah, Thanksgiving. The word conjures up images of turkey dinner, pumpkin pie, and watching football with family and friends. It kicks off the holiday season and is the biggest shopping period of the year.

Children are taught that Thanksgiving came about when Pilgrims gave thanks to God for a bountiful harvest. It seems we vaguely mumble thanks for the food on our table, the roof over our head, and how lucky we are in spite of these hard economic times. After all, our lives are so much better than, say, those in Bangladesh.

But surely there is something more to celebrate, something more sacred about this holiday.

What should we really be celebrating on Thanksgiving?

Ayn Rand described Thanksgiving as "a typically American holiday" whose "essential, secular meaning is a celebration of successful production. It is a producers' holiday. The lavish meal is a symbol of the fact that abundant consumption is the result and reward of production." She was right.

This country was mostly uninhabited and wild when our European forefathers began to develop the land and then build spectacular cities, shaping what has become the wealthiest nation in the world. It's in the American spirit to overcome challenges, create great achievements, and enjoy prosperity.

We recognize that individuals free to produce create enormous wealth. We uniquely dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. It's no accident that Americans have a holiday called Thanksgiving – a yearly tradition when we pause to appreciate the bountiful harvest we've reaped.

What is the contemporary version of this bountiful harvest? In spite of the current state of the economy, it's our affluence. It's the cars, houses, and vacations we enjoy. It's the medicines we rely on, the movies we watch, and the safe, clean streets we live on. It's the good life, for the long haul.

How do we get this bountiful harvest? Watch any hardworking American. We create it by working hard year after year, and by wanting excellence for ourselves and our loved ones. What we don't create ourselves, we use our best judgment to trade value for value with those who have the goods and services we need, such as our bankers, hairdressers, and doctors. We alone are responsible for our wealth. We are the producers and Thanksgiving is our holiday.

So, on Thanksgiving, we should thank ourselves and the other producers who make the good life possible. Why don't we?

From a young age, we are bombarded with messages designed to undermine our confident pursuit of values: "Be humble," "You can't know what's good for yourself," "It's better to give than to receive," and, above all, "Don't be selfish!" We are scolded not to take more than "our share" – whether it is of electricity, profits, or pie. We are taught that altruism – not mere benevolence or generosity, but selfless sacrifice for others – is the moral ideal. We are taught to sacrifice for strangers, who inexplicably have a claim to our hard-earned wealth. We are asked to bail out failing banks and uninsured patients. We are asked to serve rather than lead. We are taught to kneel rather than reach for the sky.

But morally, each one of us should reach for the sky. Electricity, profits, and pie can only be truly earned through individual production – giving each of us the right to savor their consumption. Every decision, from which career to pursue to whom to call a friend, should be guided by what will best advance an individual's rational goals, interests, and, ultimately, an individual's life. We should take pride in being rationally selfish.

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to appreciate and celebrate the fruits of our labor: our wealth, health, relationships, and property – all the values we most selfishly cherish. We should thank authors whose books made us rethink our lives, engineers who gave us the BlackBerry and iPhone, and financiers whose capital has helped build entire industries. We should thank ourselves and those individuals whose production makes our lives more comfortable and enjoyable – those who help us live the much-coveted American dream.

As you sit down to your sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner, think of all the talented individuals whose innovation and inventiveness made possible the products you are enjoying, even if the spread is a little smaller this year. As you celebrate with your chosen loved ones, thank yourself for everything you have done to make this moment possible. It's a time to selfishly and proudly say: "I earned this."

Debi Ghate is vice president of academic programs at the Ayn Rand Institute, which promotes the philosophy of Ayn Rand, author of "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead."

As posted elsewhere, and echoed (I think) by UtahBob - Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, too. Fall! Football! Food! Family! So great. To my extended family here at PS.com - God Bless you all. May we all survive these difficult times.

As an older guy who has lived through such as this before (granted - not to this extent), I offer... this too shall pass. Hold on to your guns and those you hold dear, but also - trust that this Republic is stronger than many think. It will survive. Hello everyone, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I'm once again on the road and heading home. I'll have my feet firming planted under the family dining room table early Thursday afternoon and thought I'd better post before time runs out.

I have very much enjoyed the reunions with old friends and the new friends I've made in 2010, and those here at PS.com.

I would like to publically express my graditude to my SF brothers for their undying devotion to country. To thank the younger enlistees, the 18xer(s), the MOS reclass and all who have stepped up to wear the uniform of a SFAS candidate, the uniform of the SFQC student and finally the recent "Q" graduate soon to arrive to their first SF assignment. Thanks for suiting up.

To my OSS family members - my uncle Grant who served in Burma, and my uncle Frank, who served in Europe.

I'm grateful for the love of my children, their playfulness and creativity. My sweet mother, who nurtured and protected me, and who allowed me to operate power tools in the house and play rock n' roll as loud as I wanted. To my father, who taught me a three jab, right/left hook combo, although, it took me awhile to see his. To thank him also for his tenderness and compassion, for his love of country and duty to serve in uniform.

I'm grateful for my immigrant ancestors who braved extreme risk of life and cost to venture to a new country with the promise that anything was possible. For those who traveled accross the vast prairie wilderness to only carve out a humble existence in the Rocky Mountains and western states.

But above all, I thank God for my life and the life I've lived, and by His divine providence the United States of America.

A-726 was conducting road check points with B Company, 1st Bn, Honduran Army. We'd been there since August and would be there for three more months. The patrol had begun that Monday and we'd stopped a bucket load of trucks, etc heading to El Salvador. My partner and I had brought our platoon back to the company perimeter near Penoname and made sure that they were in their positions and ready for nightfall.

We were eating two Honduran rations a day on one C rat (usually for dinner). We found that we were losing too much weight if we ate their food even 3 times a day. We sat down and I pulled out my meal for the day - a can of turkey loaf. I heated it, applied some Tabasco sauce and began to take it easy. Then it occurred to me that it was Thanksgiving Day. Hadn't even thought about it. It was 24 November 1983.

To all those brothers who are out there today, my thoughts are with you. You're protecting us all and we all appreciate it. Remember, there will be lots of holidays in the future where you'll be sitting back here thinking of those who are away. Take heart! We won't forget you or your sacrifice.

"Give thanks today that you are free. Take a moment to savor all the things that make life worth living, and freedom worth defending. And then set out again to work, to do whatever you can, wherever you are, in whatever situation you're in, to turn back the tide of Islamic supremacist encroachment upon free societies everywhere."
