Happy 234th birthday to all the 'soldiers of the sea' out there! I know there are numerous members of this board who, like me, once wore (or still wear) the EGA on their uniform and many more who have served alongside the Marines in one capacity or another.

Happy birthday brothers, keep up the fight and Semper Fi.

I never have been a Marine, but I have been told more than once by Marines they don't like to be called "soldiers"....... That's fine with me because I don't like to be called an EX-Special Forces soldier,I'm a "former" Special Forces soldier........:eek::p

In 1775 there was a contest between the Army and the Navy over who would get the Marines and who would get the mule... The Navy lost!

A Marine to admire - Jack Lucas - who survived the grenade explosion (one went off - one was a dud) mentioned in the MOH citation and WW2. What the citation also doesn't tell you is that he had celebrated his 17th birthday just five days earlier, was the youngest person to be awarded the MOH in the 20th Century, and that he had been in the Corps for 3 years by the time he turned 17. :lifter

JACKLYN HAROLD LUCAS
PFC, USMC

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 20 February 1945. While creeping through a treacherous, twisting ravine which ran in close proximity to a fluid and uncertain frontline on D-plus-1 day, Pfc. Lucas and 3 other men were suddenly ambushed by a hostile patrol which savagely attacked with rifle fire and grenades. Quick to act when the lives of the small group were endangered by 2 grenades which landed directly in front of them, Pfc. Lucas unhesitatingly hurled himself over his comrades upon 1 grenade and pulled the other under him, absorbing the whole blasting forces of the explosions in his own body in order to shield his companions from the concussion and murderous flying fragments. By his inspiring action and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice, he not only protected his comrades from certain injury or possible death but also enabled them to rout the Japanese patrol and continue the advance. His exceptionally courageous initiative and loyalty reflect the highest credit upon Pfc. Lucas and the U.S. Naval Service.

Happy Birthday Marines!

Dad was a Marine who served in Viet Nam. I remember him having my brother and me doing PT in the front yard when we were kids. He's still tough as nails, and he's still my hero.

Happy birthday Marines.

Grandpa served in the United States Marine Corps 1st Division where he participated in action against the Empire of Japan in Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and New Guinea.

Heaven's streets are well-guarded (Marine Corps Hymn, last verse).

Richard In the book Flag of My Father it states that after the war Jack Lucas returned to his home town and re-enrolled in High School to earn his diploma. Try to imagine sitting next to that kid.

Happy Birthday, Marines!

Although I am SF... one of my sons served in the Marines... and participated in DSII. He's out now... living the quiet, :boohoodull life as a civilian, with his wife and 4 kids:munchin. At times, he tells me about the good, and bad, things that he remembers... but that most of all... he misses the brotherhood.

Once again, Happy Birthday...
