Officials identify motorcyclist killed in Edgewater

EDGEWATER -- Police today identified a 53-year-old New Smyrna Beach man killed in a motorcycle crash.

Kevin Richard Nirschl was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday morning when his motorcycle slammed into the side of a rental truck at the intersection of West Park Avenue and Air Park Road.

A police press release said the 10:50 a.m. collision was prompted by the truck, driven by Jackie Turner, 62, Edgewater, went through the stop sign while traveling north on Air Park Road.

As the truck moved through the intersection, Nirschl crashed into its side. He was not wearing a helmet.

A traffic homicide investigation is ongoing, but preliminary indications are alcohol was not a factor in the fatality. Charges are pending the completion of the investigation

Kevin had served as SGM at SCUBA school in Key West at the time of his retirement. Also a contractor teaching at the ASOT committee.

Sad loss indeed.

I was in the 11th with Kevin Nirschl a long time ago. If this is the same guy, and I’m pretty sure it is (how many guys you know named Nirschl?), he went active serving with the 19th Group in a full-time team slot. He was in the 82nd his first time around and joined B211 in Youngstown. He got SF qualified and made E-5 while with our mob in Youngstown and went active at a time when things were slow in the economy in the 80’s. I remember that he had a Skull and Crossbones tattoo with crossed pistons in place of the bones. He was a biker to the very end and I wish he was wearing a helmet because things may have turned out differently for him. Kevin was a good guy, a reliable team member, and proud to be Airborne and SF.

A helluva way to die but everyone gotta go sometimes.

RIP Kevin..
