From the DOJ:

United States Transfers Two Guantanamo Bay Detainees to the Government of Portugal

The Department of Justice today announced that two Syrian nationals have been transferred from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the control of the government of Portugal.

As directed by the President’s Jan. 22, 2009 Executive Order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of these cases. As a result of that review, the detainees were approved for transfer from Guantanamo Bay. On Aug. 6, 2009, in accordance with Congressionally-mandated reporting requirements, the Administration informed Congress of its intent to transfer these two detainees.

The transfers were carried out under an arrangement between the United States and the government of Portugal. The United States has coordinated with the government of Portugal to ensure the transfers take place under appropriate security measures and will continue to consult with the government of Portugal regarding these detainees.

Since 2002, more than 540 detainees have departed Guantanamo for other countries including Albania, Algeria, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Bermuda, Chad, Denmark, Egypt, France, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom and Yemen.

I wonder if any "accidents" will happen during transport of any of these individuals.

I can see it now....

The headlines would read:

"Khalid Sheikh Mohammed dies in transport back to the Middle East. The plane suffered catastrophic engine failures and crashed over the Atlantic. Both pilots miraculously lived without a scratch....;)"

What a day that would be. :lifter

The White House is close to selecting a U.S. location for some Guantanamo Bay detainees to be transferred to once the facility closes, Reuters reported an Obama administration official as saying Saturday.

"We are in the final stages of locating a secure facility in the U.S. where detainees can be held," the official told Reuters.

A second official told Reuters final options had not yet been handed to the president, meaning a decision was not imminent.

The administration officials did not disclose what the final possible locations were, but one did say a soon-to-be closed maximum-security prison in Standish, Mich., and a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., were not being considered.

The official said other options could be U.S. military brigs and the SuperMax prison in Colorado....

There was a 790 max prisoner count at Guantanamo
In Jan 2009 it was down to 245
News articles claim 540 have departed the building

So,, something like 240 remain,, Not bad for 10 years..

The Saudis have 9000 permanently detained,, few complaints there??

Saudi Arabia: Counterterrorism Efforts Violate Rights Aug 10, 2009

Saudi Arabia has detained indefinitely more than 9,000 people under its counterterrorism program since 2003, offering many religious "reeducation" instead of judicial review to attain their freedom.

Maybe we should ship the last bunch to the Saudis??

A mere 250 prisoner bump to their 9000, would be like dust in the desert...
