Mule Drivers Get Federal Certification
They fought the law, and the law won. So canal boat workers in Easton have no choice but to play by the rules. And those rules mean mule drivers must now be screened by the Department of Homeland Security! WFMZ's Stephanie Esposito reports.
>> Workers at all major ports across the country are required to get federal security clearance. It's an attempt by the department of homeland security to keep our waterways safe from terrorism.. so which local vessel falls under this law?
>> It's the Josiah White 2 here at the Easton canal. According to the department of homeland security at least one person on the crew needs to have a special certification.
>> We had 4 employees that had to get them we paid 150 dollars a piece for them.
>> REPORTER: At least one person on each ride at Hugh Moore Park has to have the same federal secutiry clearance as port workers.
>> I thought it was a little bit strange because we're bound in a 2.5 mile stretch pulled by mules.
>> REPORTER: The canal is about four feet deep, and doesn't connect to any other waterways.
>> The coast guard doesn't even permit anything with a motor to be on the canal.
>> Do you feel any safer on the canal because these people are certified now?
>>No. ha ha. No.
>> Do you ever worry about terrorism on the canal?
>> I've never thought about it.
>> REPORTER: U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent went to bat for the non profit organization.. taking photos of Hank and George to a Homeland Security Committee hearing asking the feds to relax their rules because the mules are "not terrorists.
>> George is always the sweetheart. Hanks the one you have to watch out for a little more. He's the adventurous one.
>> I think it's kind of silly Workers say the situation has made Hank and George celebrities...and given the feds peace of mind. This whole fiasco here is kind of humorous.
