"The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) has positively identified remains recovered in Iraq as those of Captain Michael Scott Speicher. Captain Speicher was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm."
The fate of Scott Speicher was one of the "unknowns" from the first Gulf War.
Glad to see he is now home.
RIP Sir.
Glad his family has gotten him back.
It's always been one of the mysteries over time. I'm glad the family can now have closure. RIP and blue skies.

".......A number of new leads did surface after the invasion of Iraq, including the discovery of what some believed were the initials "MSS" scratched into the wall of an Iraqi prison. More than 50 sites were checked by military search crews in the months after the invasion - hospitals, prisons, security archives, homes and the original site where Speicher's plane crashed, about 100 miles north of the Saudi Arabian border.
Crews first visited the site in 1995. They found wings, the canopy and unexploded ordnance, but the cockpit and Speicher were missing.
Investigators excavated a potential grave site in Baghdad in 2005, tracked down Iraqis said to have information about Speicher and made numerous other inquiries.
Officials said Sunday that they got new information last month from an Iraqi citizen, prompting Marines stationed in the western province of Anbar to visit a location in the desert that was believed to be the crash site. The Iraqi said he knew of two other Iraqis who recalled an American jet crashing and the remains of the pilot being buried in the desert, the Pentagon said............"
Rest in Peace Captain..........

I was at the Florida State vs Miami football game on labor day this past weekend and because Captain Speicher was a Florida State grad, the flyover was done in honor of him. His old squadron did a 'missing man' formation right after the national anthem that gave me chills. Touching moment, One of the coolest flyovers I have ever seen. His family was on the feild to see it. Below are links to an article about the flyover and a video of the flyover.

Though not at the same time as Capt. Speicher, I did a tour through VFA-81 in the mid-90s and that unit always held him close. I was happy to know that he was found so that his family can have closure and his shipmates can pay homage.
Fair winds and following seas, Sir. We have the watch.
R.I.P., Marine, You are in the company of heroes. God bless your family.

He was a Navy Lieutenant when shot down and given honorary promotions up to Captain ( 0-6). IIRC.
