"Computerworld - Details about a U.S. Secret Service safe house for the First Family -- to be used in a national emergency -- were found to have leaked out on a LimeWire file-sharing network recently, members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee were told this morning.

Also unearthed on LimeWire networks in recent days were presidential motorcade routes and a sensitive but unclassified document listing details on every nuclear facility in the country, Robert Boback, CEO of Tiversa Inc. told committee members. ......"

LimeWire?????

One of several P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing programs in the tradition of Napster.

People using these P2P programs are frequently careless about what parts of their disk they make available to the world. Most users of sensitive information are poorly trained on security risks and security procedures.

I don't know if banning P2P programs from government and contractor computers used on government projects is the answer. It may be just one more incidence of government making a LAW where a PSA (Public Service Anouncement) should be.

Sounds like a good starting point to me.

P2P software (or any other software not controlled by the CIO) has been banned on DOD networks for years. Most workstations are locked down such that a non-admin can't install anything. Sounds like the other fed departments need to get on board.
