FBI agents this morning arrested a group of homegrown terrorists in North Carolina who were heavily armed, organized, and making plans to wage jihad overseas.
The seven men arrested—including a father and his two sons—were charged with providing material support to terrorists and conspiring to murder, kidnap, maim, and injure people overseas.
The father, Daniel Patrick Boyd, once fought in Afghanistan and trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan. All of the defendants are North Carolina residents, and all but one are U.S. citizens.
“The threat that terrorists and extremists pose to America and our allies has not dulled or gone away,” said Owen D. Harris, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Charlotte Division. “These arrests today show there are people living among us, in our communities in North Carolina and around the U.S., that are honing their skills to carry out acts of murder and mayhem.”
The seven-count indictment details a conspiracy that began in earnest in 2006 and continued until shortly before today’s arrests. The defendants trained in the U.S. for battle and were willing to die as martyrs. They raised money to support their training and in some cases recruited and radicalized others to further their cause overseas. In one case, Daniel Patrick Boyd traveled in March 2006 with one of his sons to Gaza to introduce him to individuals who believed violent jihad was a religious obligation. A year later, Boyd and several of the defendants went to Israel to wage jihad but returned without success.
The defendants, as well as some of the additional charges they face, are:
Daniel Patrick Boyd: The 39-year-old Boyd faces charges of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime, receiving a firearm through interstate commerce, and also selling a firearm to a felon.
Dylan Boyd: One of Daniel Boyd’s sons, Dylan, 22, is also charged with selling a firearm—a 9mm Beretta handgun—to a felon.
Zakariya Boyd: Also a son of Daniel Boyd, Zakariya, 20, is charged with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime.
Hysen Sherifi: The 24-year-old Kosovo native is a legal U.S. resident. As part of the conspiracy, the indictment alleges he traveled to Kosovo in July 2008 to engage in violent jihad, then returned in April to raise support for the mujahedeen. Sherifi allegedly supplied $500 to help fund Daniel Boyd’s overseas efforts.
Anes Subasic: The 33-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen discussed preparations with Daniel Boyd to send two people overseas.
Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan: A 22-year-old U.S. citizen.
Ziyad Yaghi: The 21-year-old U.S. citizen traveled to Jordan in October 2006 to engage in violent jihad.
The indictment details the arsenal the defendants built up over several years, including handguns, assault rifles, and a Bushmaster M4A3 that Daniel Boyd allegedly received illegally in 2006. Over the past two months, the defendants practiced with the weapons and developed their military tactics on private property in rural Caswell County.
The Raleigh Joint Terrorism Task Force of the FBI Charlotte Division led the multi-year, multi-agency investigation, dubbed “Triangle Terror Takedown” in reference to the state’s research triangle, along with the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center.
“We will remain vigilant, so must the public,” Special Agent in Charge Harris said. “If you see or hear something, act. Call your local police department or the FBI.”

Interesting. They were planning death and destruction abroad.
How long before they start planning missions here? or should I say, get caught planning missions here?
It's a safe assumption they're already planning missions here...it's been almost 8 years since the last attack. Was about 8 years since the one before that....I'd say we're about due...

Plus the new administration is scaling back what we can do domestically, or that's what it appears to be doing. Too bad it's going to take a domestic attack to wake up the idiots who voted for this guy. I hope we get lucky and it doesn't happen.
I have to say that this fellow really doesn't have the look of a radical Islamic terrorist.
I have to say that this fellow really doesn't have the look of a radical Islamic terrorist.
With a name like Daniel Patrick Boyd, I think he watched The Boondock Saints one too many times.
Many of the most radical web sites from the UK are run by Brit converts and many are Irish for some reason....
It seems to me, albeit unscientifically arrived at, that many that leave their own society/culture in search of whatever become the most radicalized in their adoption of their new identity.
They do not just adopt a new conceptual attitude but remake themselves into a created ethnicity that is 180 degrees from their actual roots.
An 'in your face' hatred from whence they came as a basis for this new self.
John Lind (sp), etc.etc.
If you are uncomfortable in your own skin/society...just create another and war against that which made you uncomfortable.

At first he looks like just a good 'ol boy but take a look at his eyes.
You never know who's going to go and join that cause. Adam Gadahn, who's a spokesperson for Al Qaida and also wanted by the FBI grew up on a ranch in Winchester, CA only 20 minutes from where I live.
What is it about certian institutions that make them so attractive to the "lunatic fringe"?

Hysen Sherifi is a Kosovar.
The rest are American citizens.
Take a hard look at Chechnya and the Islamic front there...Europeans...this threat will become more difficult to handle as more and more converts come from Euro countries

Does this Boyd have any military time?
I'm hoping not.
IMHO, gents...
I'm having a real problem following the rationale of Mr O'Dummy...let me get this straight: First, let's say I'm an agnostic. One day I say to myself, "I need to become more enlighted...hey, I know...I'll go out and study up on Islam." The next day (after careful study and a few loads in the bong), I now say; "Ya know, I think I'm going to (1) go to Pakistan (is it "Pak-i-stan" or "Pawk-a-stawn"?) anyway, I'm going to go there and study how to blow up strangers...that'll put me in solid with God!" (2) "After I do that I'm sure to get a girl!"
Understanding the motive is impossible, for me anyway. Can't stretch the old mind over that rainbarrel. That's probably why God never made me a Quiet Professional...I'd spend too much time on wondering why some SOB was doing something stupid and not just take care of business. I think we need to develop a strategy of talented fighters who can infiltrate these groups and just quietly resolve matters. I'm not advocating ignoring the Constitution. Just take care of business. There's no doubt the terrorists are in the domestic theater. I'm just not sure the FBI or the CIA can do the job anymore. Too often their charters get in the road. We need something else. IMHO we need more military experience working the problem.

Does this Boyd have any military time?
Yes, for the other side.
"According to the indictment, during the period from 1989 through 1992, Daniel Boyd traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan where he received military-style training in terrorist training camps for the purpose of engaging in violent jihad. Following this training, he allegedly fought in Afghanistan."
http://charlotte.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/2009/ce072709.htm
He'd have been 19 years old in 1989, and with a two year-old son. His second son would have been born in '89.

8th suspect sought in North Carolina 'jihad' case
RALEIGH, North Carolina (CNN) -- Federal authorities are searching for an eighth alleged member of a North Carolina group that authorities say plotted "violent jihad" overseas, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Robin Zier of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Raleigh told CNN that the eighth person, whose name has been redacted from court documents, is a U.S. citizen.
She added that U.S. Attorney George Holding had said federal authorities hoped to have the person apprehended soon, and the public should not be worried.
The U.S. Attorney's Office would not release further details.
According to an indictment released Monday, the eighth suspect, described as a North Carolina resident, traveled to Pakistan in October 2008 to "engage in violent jihad." It offered no other information....

Search broadens in case of Raleigh-based terror plot

RALEIGH, N.C. — Federal authorities searched overseas Tuesday for a U.S. citizen charged with plotting "violent jihad" as part of a North Carolina-based group of aspiring international terrorists....

Spokeswoman Khalilah Sabra, bottom center, and other supporters with the Muslim American Society speak publicly Tuesday in Raleigh, N.C., cautioning against early judgment in the case of a group of Raleigh Muslims accused of plotting terror attacks.
My first impression is that these guys played way too many video games online. So after mastering Rainbow 6, they decided to do it for real. Started their own training camp, conducting real world operations to the hotbed country of Kosovo. To digust their intentions, they only travel during spring break and summer vacation. And after a few weeks, they would return without conducting any operations of violent terrorism. I'm sorry, but I think these fellows are the new era of dungeons and dragons players.......
When I look at Mr. Boyd I can’t help but remember an old joke we had about soldiers that “smoked Kools, drank grape soda, and parted their hair down the middle.”:D

I'll go with that!
All I need to know about Boyd I can figure out by doing the math & looking at the photo. Guy was 17 when he had his first kid & followed up with #2 two years later. This guy is straight white trash, poor genes + poor upbringing = dip sh*t adult.

But oddly enough with some people it is not money, ideology, or some misplaced sense of duty which drive them to do the pure BS they do. Some people just want to bring chaos to everything they touch. I believe these are the truly EVIL SOB's which need to be wipped from the hard drive of this world. How can you reason with a person who does something just because?

N.C. terror suspects had arms, ammo, FBI 'playbook,' agent says
updated 2 hours, 23 minutes ago
....Also found at the home of Daniel Patrick Boyd and his sons were gas masks and a book that FBI special agent Michael Sutton called "essentially our playbook to how we respond to acts of terrorism."....
It's too bad the QP's here didn't run into this terrorist while he was actively engaging in operations and cooperation with the enemy. I hope the FBI folks are able to successfully walk back the cat and figure out what other affiliated cells and support they have been getting here. That way the whole lot of them can be dealt with appropriately.

Amputation of a hand and foot?
Too bad those sentences in Pakistan weren't carried out.
Homegrown terrs should be dealt with as traitors, tried, and executed.

Curious, How does one (An American) get into a Terrorist training camp oversea's. I would think that would take some interesting contacts no matter what your intensions were. Two Thumbs up on the FBI...

True.
Makes one wonder how the Jihadis screen potential trainees. You would think they would be very concerned about foreign intelligence operatives.
