Car Dealer Gives AK-47 With Purchase
Dealer Says Similar Promotion Last Year Proved Successful

POSTED: 6:44 am CDT July 17, 2009
UPDATED: 8:01 am CDT July 17, 2009
BUTLER, Mo. -- Those purchasing a vehicle at Max Motors in Missouri will receive an AK-47 assault rifle with their purchase during the month of August.

This is the second consecutive year the dealership has given away vouchers for a firearm as part of a sales promotion.

The logo at Mark Muller's dealership is a nod to his feelings about guns - with an old west caricature pointing two pistols at those who pass by. He said it's a nod to what he calls "big city" ways.

"We really are different than the big city dealers," Muller said.

The actual promotion gives those who buy a vehicle a voucher redeemable at a gun shop for the $450 dollars it costs to get an AK-47.

"That way it separates you from anything bad that could happen," Muller said. "We'll put it in the hands of professionals who do this every day."

The AK-47 ups the ante on a promotion Muller did last year, giving away vouchers for the price of the Caltec pistol. Muller proudly shows off the same pistol he carries in his pocket.

"We already did handguns," Muller said. "Let's do something more fun -- AKs. You ever shot an AK? Oh, they're a blast."

Muller said he knows people are bound to be bothered by the promotion, even in his small city locale, people like Gabe Johnston.

"I would not encourage people to get an AK-47," Gabe Johnston, of Jasper, Mo., said. "I'm fine with a rifle. But maybe not assault rifles ... I don't see the purpose of those guns."

Muller said the purpose of any gun is protection -- and at Max Motors, selling cars. "We get a lot of press out of these kind of promotion," Muller said. "We sell a lot of cars. And we have a lot of fun."

Muller says last year's promotion, which also offered the option of $250 gas cards, sold 35 more cars than usual.

This year's promotion is guns only, though Muller said customers can spend the voucher on a less expensive model, like a hunting rifle, or towards a more expensive one, like an AR-15 if they wanted to buy American.

Max Motors, a Kansas City car dealer, is offering a voucher for a free AK-47 for every pick-up truck bought in August.

Auto sales have been absolutely clobbered--down 28% year over year--so the government, dealers, and auto makers are coming up with all sorts of inventive ways to attract business.

Mark Muller, owner of Max Motors, said the program builds on an earlier offer where customers had a choice between a $250 gas voucher or a gun voucher of the same value. An AK-47 can cost twice as much. Muller calls the initial deal an overwhelming success. He also says it generates a lot of publicity and really anger "liberals."

Worry not "liberals," Muller cannot just send a driver off the lot with an AK-47 in the passenger seat. State law requires potential gunowners to obtain a license before carrying a weapon in their car. As an aside, requests for permits are already way up in the Kansas City area, according to The Kansas City Star. So, some customers can drive straight from Max Motors to the local gun dealer.

Max Motors also offers more family-friendly promotions. Last Saturday, four used cars were sold for $5 each. The cars--including an 2001 Mustang and a 1998 Jeep Cherokee--went fast, and brought hundreds of customers to the lot. Max Motors sells several brands including Chevrolet, Ford and Pontiac.

This deal beats the snot out of wimpier offers on the market. The government's cash for clunkers? Please, what can be shot with a new car? Suzuki's offer of free gas for the summer? With an AK-47, we think we can get free gas somehow. Hyundai's offer to refund a car purchase if you lose your job? Okay, that one is tough to beat, unemployment in Missouri is only 9%. Maybe the AK-47 deal is better for those with secured employment.

Face it, there's nothing better than breathing in the new car smell, mixed with the smokey scent of an AK-47 after it's fired off a full magazine of bullets.

So, given the fact that I have to buy the wife a new car, they really need to do this in Texas. I could use an AK-47.
