A Flagstaff High School graduate and former Flagstaff police officer was killed Sunday during a military operation in northeastern Afghanistan.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Eric James Lindstrom, 27, of the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y., was killed by gunfire during the operation near Bargh-e Matal, said his father, Ric. He said that his son had been stationed at Camp Joyce, which is a remote fire base near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He added that his son had been in several firefights in the last few months.
Lindstrom had gone into the Army at 17 after he graduated from FHS in 1999, his father said. After four years in the Army that included one tour of duty in Iraq, Lindstrom returned to become a Flagstaff Police Department officer. After four years with the department, he returned to the Army and was subsequently sent to a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
His wife and children currently live on base at Fort Drum.
Lindstrom leaves behind wife Tara and 7-month-old twins Olivia and Riley. He is also survived by his parents, Ric and Kathy; half-brother Jake; and grandmother Mary O'Hara.
The family is on the way to Dover Air Force Base to finalize arrangements. Services are pending.
The U.S. Army confirmed one death in Sunday's attack in Bargh-e-Matal, which is in the Nuristan province. Other troops were wounded, said Lt. Cmdr. Christine Sidenstricker. She did not have an exact number of wounded.
Sidenstricker did not provide more details on the attack, saying only that it was not a roadside bomb or suicide bomber.
Lindstrom's brings the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year to 105, compared with 151 U.S. deaths in all of 2008. Overall, 194 international troops have died in Afghanistan this year, according to an Associated Press count based on official announcements.
Other Coconino County soldiers killed in Iraq since 2003:
-- Lori Piestewa, of Tuba City, March 23, 2003, near Nasiriyah
-- Alyssa Peterson, of Flagstaff, Sept. 15, 2003, in Tel Afar
-- Keith Quinn, of Page, Sept. 4, 2004, near Fallujah
-- Marty Mortenson, of Flagstaff, April 20, 2005, in Ramadi
