Ok folks, our objective is to try and fill all the positions within a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha with famous personalities from the 19th Century, and in particular, from the Old West.

For starters I chose Phil Sheridan to lead the team in the position of 18A. Considering his military background and the fact that he was one of the outstanding leaders of his time I gave the title to him. Sorry to some of you for not chosing George Custer but anyone who graduates last in their class at Westpoint and then gets their entire command wiped out doesn't get to be a team leader.

The position of 180A went to William Cody. His experience as a soldier, scout, buffalo hunter, trapper, and a host of other trades, and also the fact that he managed the Wild West show on two Continents really appealed to me. Because of his varied talents William Hickock was a strong second choice.

For the position of Team Sergeant 18Z I wanted someone who had a good head on their shoulders and a who had a strong ability to influence other people. For these reasons I chose Virgil Earp. Though not as famous as his younger brother Wyatt his experience as a soldier, rancher, lawman, and businessman made him a good choice.

Alan Pinkerton was chosen as the 18F because of his extensive expertise in the tracking and capturing of criminals. He also served in the Union Intelligence Service during the Civil War.

My choice of 18Bs was relatively easy. I chose Tom Horn to be the senior and William Bonney, alias "Billy the Kid" to be the junior. These men were picked because of their experience with firearms and their more than willingness to use them. A second choice would have been Jesse James and his brother Frank.

Robert Parker, alias "Butch Cassidy" and Harry Longabaugh, alias "The Sundance Kid" were chosen to be the team's 18Cs. They were chosen because of their expertise with explosives. They often used their talents in blowing up train cars and opening safes.

For 18Es I chose Thomas Edison as the senior and Alaxander Graham Bell as the junior. Both of these men were brilliant inventors and had extensive experience with the technology of their day.

Considering the scarcity of doctors in the Old West the choice for 18Ds was a rather difficult one. I eventually went with Doc Holliday for the senior and Sitting Bull for the junior. Sitting Bull wasn't a physician by any means but was a onetime shaman instead. What the heck, those Native Americans knew a great deal about both herbal and holistic medicine.

Well there it is folks, if anyone choses to make any changes or substitutions the floor is yours.

Outstanding team. I wonder how they would have done with the old "Certification and Validation" from the late 80's?

A word of caution, though might have a bit of a personality clash between the 18E's.

OVERHEARD IN THE TEAMROOM
" I invented it"
"NO, I invented it"
"Well, I thought of it first"
"Hell you did! You heard me talkin' about my idea"
"You call that mumblin' 'talkin'?"
"Look who's claimin' to be the Great Communicator"
"Hey, Junior Who's the Senior 18E?"
"Oh, good come back. . . "
"When you talk all I hear is a dog whistle anyway"
"You talkin' to me?"
"Your lips are moving but. . . "
ad nauseum . . .

Completely not plausable without mention of sunspots!
Tesla was the man, the team would have had AC power too.

SF had to get rid of the G43s when they got rid of LT XOs - no 180A would ever crank the generator for an Echo. :D

Richard's $.02 :munchin Robin Sage. Final night of Isolation, equipment divvie-up. "Someone" took a look at the generator and started negotiating.
"If you'll take THIS, I'll take that, and that. . . and that, . . . and that, AND this . . . and (aww com-mon) that? . . . and that, . . . "

We were geniuses! ;)I'm sure we invented strapping it to a tree and pedalling it like a recumbant bike. We thought we were SO smart
("WOW guys, we ARE so SMART" "Yeah, we ARE." Wonder why no one ELSE figured out this way?)

Then it broke. Suddenly, completely, irrepairably. Robin Sage suddenly got a lot tougher.:(

J.E.B. Stuart over Sheridan. Also John Singleton Mosby or John Hunt Morgan seem more in line with unconventional warfare/guerrilla actions than Sheridan.

Col. William Holland Thomas, commander of the 69th North Carolina (Thomas Legion), for 180A. http://thomaslegion.net/

John S. Hinson and Hiram Berdan for 18Bs.

I would say how could you recommend anyone for a Team until you have been on one?

Don't worry, none of them were through the school either.

sf11b,

Interesting post, perhaps I should have done a little more research.

Evidently I shouldn't have posted anyway, so it seems my post wasn't that interesting or welcome.

True! BUT, the "school' didn't exist during their time. It does exist now, and has for a while. Besides, the comment was that they didn't have "team time" - not whether or not they attended the "school"! Big difference...

1st My comment was in regards to You not them.
2nd It was ref Team Time not have if they had gone to the School (SWCS).

If you wish to be a Smart Ass get it right.

3rd So Far you are the only one that has made a comment that has not been vetted as a QP or show's in their profile that they are SF. The two non QP listed guys I know one and he is SF and served in 3/5th SFG with me but has not asked to be vetted. The other after reading his post for a while I can tell you he is SF and all he will need to do is request vetting.

Remember your SA and what board you are on. :munchin
