The politicians only use it when they realized "holy crap, they caught me!!!!" and their butts are being handed to them on a silver platter.
Synonyms: be at cross purposes*, be bewildered, be confused, be perplexed, get signals crossed*, get signals mixed*, get wrong, get wrong impression*, miscomprehend, misknow, miss the point*, not register*, take amiss, take wrongly
I don't think I got it wrong when I read or heard their statements but they sure as hell leave me bewildered, confused and perplexed....as to how anyone thought enough of them to elect them. But I am not not bewildered, confused, perplexed nor do I miscomprehend how STUPID and what liars they are!

NOTE: "I was mistaken" is different from "I was wrong."
Look closer at "I was mis-taken." The root taken implies you (not me) took something.
In other words, you didn't understand what I said (you should listen closer next time)...

None will know you "misread" if you say nothing about what you "misread".
