What is it with all the Republicans cheating these days?... And what kind of arrogant prick actually thinks that anyone will buy the story that he went to Buenos Aires cause it's an exotic city - WITHOUT HIS WIFE.... Dumbass..
And I was a Sanford fan when he rejected the Bailout money...

-----
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/24/report-south-carolina-governor-traveled-argentina-appalachian-trail/

In a stunning confession, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday to being "unfaithful" to his wife during a press conference meant to clear up his mysterious week-long absence.

The admission was the latest, and most shocking, installment in the evolving story surrounding Sanford's disappearance. He left town Thursday and returned Wednesday morning on a flight from Argentina, even though his staff had initially told reporters Sanford was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Sanford on Wednesday afternoon admitted he was visiting his mistress in the South American country.

"I've let down a lot of people. That's the bottom line," Sanford said Wednesday. "I've been unfaithful to my wife."

Click here to watch the video of Sanford's press conference.

Sanford explained that he had "developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend" from Argentina. He said they first met eight years ago but the romantic relationship began more recently.

"It began very innocently as I suspect many of these things do ... Over this last year it developed into something much more than that," he said.

The governor apologized profusely to his family, his staff and the people of South Carolina. He said he's let down his four sons in a "profound way," though he said his wife Jenny had known about the affair for five months and they were trying to work through it.

He said he is resigning as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. The RGA announced shortly afterward that Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour would assume Sanford's duties.

Sanford did not say whether he'll stay on as governor.

The first-hand account Wednesday was meant to settle mounting questions over the governor's week-long disappearance.

His staff first claimed the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail a few hours away from the state capital. But confusion intensified Wednesday morning after The State newspaper reported that Sanford had just returned from Argentina. Reporter Gina Smith had caught Sanford returning to the Atlanta airport, where the governor admitted part of the story -- that he had been visiting Buenos Aires.

"I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford told The State. "It's a great city."

But it became clear early in his press conference that Sanford would reveal something much more personal surrounding his trip, as he repeatedly made reference to his family and apologized for his behavior. Several minutes into his remarks, he acknowledged the affair. He said it was the first and only time he's been unfaithful to his wife. (Sanford's wife earlier could not account for his absence when asked by The Associated Press. She said that her husband merely wanted to write and needed time away from the kids.)

Gov. Sanford said his staff does not bear blame, saying it is "my fault in shrouding this larger trip." He released a written statement afterward asking for forgiveness and repeating that his staff did not "intentionally relay false information."

"What they've said over the past two days they believed to be true, and I'm sorry to them for putting them in this position," the statement said.

Sanford's admission comes one week after Republican Sen. John Ensign, of Nevada, admitted an affair with a former campaign aide. He resigned his GOP leadership post after admitting the infidelity.

The South Carolina governor was considered a potential contender in the 2012 presidential election. Asked about the confession Wednesday, South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson said it was a "gamechanger."

He told FOX News he was "saddened, disappointed and shocked" by the admission.

Sanford had already generated stern criticism from Democrats and Republicans in the state for leaving without telling key people, like Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, where he was going.

Some believed Sanford was merely trying to unwind after a difficult legislative session during which he was unsuccessful in blocking his state from taking federal stimulus dollars.

Sanford said Wednesday that the session was emotionally exhausting and that sometimes he needs to get out of the so-called "bubble." But he said that's not the whole story.

Before launching into his rambling and detailed explanation, he said, "We'll let the chips fall where they may."

Holly,

The thing about Latinas is that when their young lady's they have the smallest waist lines, but when you go to see "Momma" she's usually a very stout woman..... Of course,I'm speaking from experience that's over 50 years ago,but I been told,(by Richard,I think!) that the more things change the more they stay the same...:p

No photos of her yet but her name is Maria Belen Shapur.

Apparently he had been using gov't funds to travel to Argentina - that could be serious a problem.

Here's another kick in the nuts for Sanford.. His wife has the money. They didn't move into the Gov's mansion because it would have been a step down. They (she) has a mega-house on Sullivan's Island. Her family started Skil brand tools.

I guess Sanford is going to move into the Gov's mansion now...:munchin

There has got to be more to this than has been released so far.

Since he is a Republican, I am sure that the media will get to the bottom of it eventually, with all of the gory details.

Hey, anybody heard anything else on the Rep. William J. Jefferson (D) trial?

You know, the one who took the bribes and had all of that cash in his freezer? Seems to have dropped of the radar. How about all of the Dim nominees who were tax cheats?

Which is more injurious to integrity of the elected office?

Which story will the media pursue?

The blogosphere is alive with the search for photos of the woman and there are already extracts of her correspondence (via email) with the governor. It is too bad Gov. Sanford could not find it in himself either to develop and to express such sentiments to his wife or get out of his marriage.

KTLA, a So Cal area station, has a morning news show that gets increasingly gossipy once the morning rush hour starts to fade. Two reporters were pillorying Gov. Sanford in no small part because the man was so outspoken during the fall out of W.J. Clinton's search for a desk with ever more headroom.*

What was ironic about their gabbing is that one of their colleagues, Lu Parker, was recently outed for her stealth relationship with L.A.'s mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa. When that story broke, every local station covered it, except for KTLA. KTLA communicated in a news release, cited in some of the reports, that Ms. Parker would not cover any more stories regarding the mayor. (Nothing was said about the impact of the relationship on the strong bond of trust between KTLA's news department and the L.A. community.)

The irony continues. Mr. Villaraigosa had, a couple of years ago, ruined his own marriage and national political career, when he disclosed that he had stepped out on his wife a second time. His mistress, Mirthala Salinas, also a reporter, was thrown to the wolves. She'd not told her bosses that she was covering stories about her married novio..

Mr. Villaraigosa went on with his career as a somewhat popular mayor. After all, he was doing something about the potholes (in the streets, if not his head) and traffic. (To his credit, it no longer takes ten to fifteen minutes to drive from the Hollywood Bowl to Hollywood and Highland during rush hour. On the other hand, what is up with the potholes on Wilshire Blvd. No, I'm not bitter, I'm just saying.)

Earlier this week, Mr. Villaraigosa announced he was not running for California's governorship after all. KTLA teased the story as if (a) the announcement would be a surprise, and (b) the mayor would have had any chance to win that office.

Ms. Parker talks about her favorite subject (herself) here (http://www.luparker.com/). :munchin

MOO, part of the reason this story is receiving such attention is because of Gov. Sanford's disappearance and then his changing stories. This weird factor is yummy icing on the fluffy cake that is contemporary American political journalism. YMMV. (That is, on the status of journalism. I would hope that we could all agree on the proposition that icing is intrinsically yummy.)

The non-coverage of Edwards changed the course of American politics, and, potentially, American history. How many Democrats threw their support to the eventual president on his say so?

After 10 hours listening to news on various stations in the car today, it seems even many republicans believe he was outed by the SC Republican leadership. Seems they hated him. Not "properly conservative" for their tastes.Too much of a maverick. Also, it seems well known that he and the lt governor detested each other. Politicians will eat their own.

Maybe I'm the last one on earth, but I do. If you can't trust them to do right by their own families how can we trust them to do what's right for the state and the country? The reality is he/they are in positions of public trust, if they want to be a cheating, lying, idiots, while they'll fit right in in politics, they shouldn't be there IMO.

My feelings are this, if you don't love your wife/husband anymore or have irreconcilable differences that's fine, you've given up on the oath/promise you made, you know that death do us part thing, ok I got it, at least be man (or woman) enough to say it's over and get a divorce and move on don't drag the family through the mud.

My point, though lost a bit in traslation, was the 24-7 news coverage of this story.

My personal morals on this subject aside, it just seemed overblown by the media, who must think this is all Our Country wants to hear about.

Bingo. Alas the great unwashed masses will sit slack-jawed and enraptured by the story as they flip from Entertainment Tonight to the Real Housewives of New Jersey, to Larry King Live.
But if a story comes on about an important piece of pending legislation, their eyes will glaze over and they'll wander to the kitchen for another bag of Cheetos.

Arguing couple does no damage with Cheetos
Wednesday, June 24, 2009
By Brian Mosely

A local couple arrested on domestic assault charges Sunday had an unusual choice of alleged weaponry -- Cheetos.

Warrents filed by Cpl. Kevin Roddy, of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department, stated he responded to a call at a home on Pass Road, where 40-year-old James Earl Taylor and Mary S. Childers, 44, were allegedly involved in an argument.

According to Roddy's report, the pair became "involved in a verbal altercation" with each other "at which time Cheetos potato chips were used in the assault."

"There was evidence of the assault," the report read, "however no physical marks on either party and the primary aggressor was unable to be determined."

Both Taylor and Childers were charged by Roddy with domestic assault. Both posted a bond of $2,500 and will appear in Bedford County General Sessions Court on July 15.

I've met Governor Sanford and he seems like a very personable guy with a good sense of humor. That being said, he is not well liked by either party at the state level here in South Carolina. I also must deduct points for not being very creative in the alibi department. For example, he could have said that he last remembered drinking a beverage in his office and then woke up 5 days later in Argetina....similar to what happened in the movie "The Hangover".
