Green Beret dies on motorcycle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The motorcycle rider killed when he crashed into a semi-truck on Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs was a 27-year-old Green Beret based at Fort Carson.

Fort Carson identified the soldier Friday as Sgt. 1st Class Justin Alfred Petersen of Rock Springs. He was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group and had been deployed to Iraq twice, in 2003-04 and 2007-08.

The crash occurred Thursday morning. (28 May 2009)

Police Sgt. Rob Kelley said Petersen and another motorcyclist drove across a dirt median separating an onramp from I-25 as they tried to get ahead of a large truck.

Kelley said Petersen's motorcycle hit the truck's front passenger side and he lost control.
