Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV told 52 WHINSEC graduates Thursday that the unity nurtured by the institute is vital to the future.

Speaking to the Comand and General Staff Officer Course graduates, Caldwell, commanding general of the Combined Arms Center, said the days of one nation going it alone are over.

“There’s no question that as we go forth in the 21st century no longer will America be allowed to take on and tackle problems by themselves,” Caldwell said. “It’s going to take a coalition approach … and we all very much appreciate and understand there’s enormous power that comes from many nations coming together to find solutions for challenging issues out there.”

The graduation took place at the Supper Club of the Benning Conference Center. In addition to Caldwell, retired Maj. Gen. Kenneth Leuer, retired Col. Ralph Puckett and Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation Commandant Col. Felix L. Santiago also attended.

The yearlong course offered at WHINSEC brings to Fort Benning officers and their families from around the hemisphere. A total of eight nations were represented at Thursday’s graduation.

This course differs from others in that is it taught completely in Spanish.

“It allows us to bring all of our partners in the Western Hemisphere together for a year without having to learn our language,” Caldwell said.

U.S. Army Maj. Angel M. Martinez said the most challenging part of the course for him was reading, writing and analyzing everything in Spanish even though he’s a native Spanish speaker. Having served in the Army for almost two decades, Martinez said he’s become more comfortable conducting business in English.

“It took me by surprise,” the Special Forces officer said of his initial difficulty with the course’s language requirement. “It was quite challenging.”

Course graduate Air Force Maj. Chris Callis said he’s confident the training made him a more confident, competent leader. Callis also said that the friendships and connections he made while studying at Fort Benning will benefit him in the future.

“It brings us together and gives us an opportunity to study how to become better officers and it also gives us an opportunity to establish relations necessary for the future security of the Western Hemisphere,” Callis said.
