View Full Version : Badly Wounded Soldier Want's Birthday Greeting's

THIS HAS BEEN CHECKED OUT WITH FT SAM and is OK!!
Sergeant Daniel Thornhill has been in recovery there for two years from an IED blast in Iraq. He lost both legs in the explosion, and was burned over 50% of his body. He still has his arms, but the manager states "one is in better shape than the other". His parents are concerned because his morale is quite low, and he has had almost no visitors at all. He turns 28 years old this week.
A birthday card, a note, flowers, a CD or DVD -- anything would help. Here's a young man who's lost more than most of us can imagine in service to our country, and a few kind words from well-wishers and fellow veterans would help his morale. The manager says he's a "typical young man" and loves electronics, so any gifts along those lines would also be much appreciated.
Heres his address:

BMT, it has been posted over at LF.net
I made a call to the number and asked the person who answered to relay my well wishes, as I personally do not have a way of getting any gifts there on time for his birthday.
BMT, thanks for putting this out there! I wish I was closer so I could pop in and visit this young soldier but I will definitely be sending him something in the mail this weekend! And I will let him know where I got the information about him so he knows how much he is supported and thought of!

Perfect, I have a project this weekend.
As I posted elsewhere, I think I shall adopt him. It's been a while since I had one. Thanks for posting this info. No one should feel down at a time like this.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump!:lifter

Tuukka did post this on Lightfighter.net as was asked about. Now, Boomer6469 has posted this update. I thought you might be interested to read it, as well.
I just got off the phone with Dan's mother, Susan. Dan has more than enough birthday cards as the last mail drop-off was two full mail tubs of cards.
... We talked at length about the Fisher House. The Fisher House is a complex of four buildings, two old and two new with a great staff. They have the capacity of around 90 families and run about at 90% capacity all the time. There is another barracks behind the Fisher House which can house up to 400 recovering soldiers. Ones who are far enough along in their recovery where their family does not have to be there 24/7. Dan and others go to the Center for the Intrepid for rehab and PT.
I asked Susan if when she came to the Fisher House a year ago if she brought everything she needed or, whoops, you realize what you forgot. I used this as an example for the new families arriving to help their soldier as to what they might need.
Susan is going to put me in contact with a couple of staff members/coordinators to see what we can collectively do as a group for the Fisher House families and soldiers. We could involve our churches, civic organizations, etc.
PM me with ideas or post here, whatever you would like. I will keep everyone abreast when I hear from Susan again.
I would be happy to post an update if Boomer has one, if there is interest. In any case, it sounds as if he is hearing from many people.

I donate money to Fisher House, but maybe that isn't enough. If you could post the things that they need for the families, you know, toiletries, etc., that would be great. I only live 3 hours or so from Fort Sam Houston
Thank you
