What a strange coincidence. If you've got a thing about military people and their underclothing please check out "Military Unmentionables" in the Commedy section of this website.

I had an SF Sergeant Major one time tell me that they got hit in a base camp in VN one night and he jumped out of his bunk where he was sleeping commando, pulling on the first pants he got on the way to his mortar pit. Turns out they were Bermuda shorts.
He said that he hung rounds defending the base till dawn. When daylight came up, he said that he was black from head to toe from the powder residue from the mortar rounds, except for a lot of blood on his shorts and thighs. They thought he had been hit and sent him to the aid station.
Turns out that he didn't have the time (or remember) to zip the shorts up and as he put it, the zipper "damn near sawed his tallywhacker off".
He said that as if that wasn't bad enough, he had R&R coming up with the wife in Hawaii the next week, and even if she bought the explanation, there wasn't a lot he could do with it for a while.
Nevertheless, it was probably a lot more fun than if the NVA had overrun the base camp.
I believe that when they call for every man on the perimeter, you get there with your weapon, and whatever else you can grab on the way there. Unless he had plenty of time and failed to jock up, this kid did the right thing. Looks like he brought all of the important stuff.

I recall an attack on our 1st Cav firebase in '70 late one evening up near the border. The commo captain was a Japanese-American fella from Hawaii. When pieces of metal began to drop from the sky he rolled out of bed, grabbed his rifle, and sprinted to the radio bunker. He was wearing his od boxer shorts and shower shoes. After a while a smart E-5 pointed out that he might be mistaken for a member of the opposition if he didn't put some clothes on. He told me he got dressed pretty damned quick.:D

U.S. defense chief lauds soldier in pink boxers
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday praised an Army soldier in eastern Afghanistan who drew media attention this month after rushing to defend his post from attack while wearing pink boxer shorts and flip-flops.
In fact, Gates said he wants to meet the soldier and shake his hand the next time he visits Afghanistan.
"Any soldier who goes into battle against the Taliban in pink boxers and flip-flops has a special kind of courage," Gates said in remarks prepared for a speech in New York.
"I can only wonder about the impact on the Taliban. Just imagine seeing that: a guy in pink boxers and flip-flops has you in his cross-hairs. What an incredible innovation in psychological warfare," he said.
Army Specialist Zachary Boyd, 19, of Fort Worth, Texas, rushed from his sleeping quarters on May 11 to join fellow platoon members at a base in Afghanistan's Kunar Province after the unit came under fire from Taliban positions.
A news photographer was on hand to record the image of Boyd standing at a makeshift rampart in helmet, body armor, red T-shirt and boxers emblazoned with the message: "I love NY."
When the image wound up on the front page of the New York Times, Boyd told his parents he might lose his job if President Barack Obama saw him out of uniform.
"I can assure you that Specialist Boyd's job is very safe indeed," Gates said in the speech.
The U.S. defense chief was scheduled to deliver the speech at New York's annual Salute to Freedom dinner in Manhattan.
