I just qualified for my security guard firearms permit and let me tell you how antiquated the procedure is in Ole Miss! The police dept requires you to use a 38 cal. pistol (not my 45 cal. that I wear on duty) because the state decides what type of weapon is required to qualify....... Where in any other state must you use a 38?

While in college I signed up as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff to get some law enforcement experience. The first firearms qualification I did in Tennessee back in 1989 used printed classroom material the stated all training & live fire must be done with Colt or Smith & Wesson revolvers chambered for .38 special. The .357 Magnum was specifically ruled out.

We were told to ignore all that and use any major name production .38 revolver, even my stainless Ruger GP100 .357, but still were issued 18 rounds of standard velocity Hornady 125gr XTP jacketed hollow-points that I chrono'd at 890fps. Fortunately, I never had to shoot anyone because that person would have been pissed. I swear on my life that when I quit a couple of years later I had to give the department back exactly 18 rounds of Hornady 125gr XTP JHPs. Except no substitutes, and beware of foreign imitations.

Jokes aside, it was super accurate, had virtually no recoil and none of us part-timers shot a toe off.

When TN started licensing armed security employees it was a revolver-only program, but surely that has changed by now.

On a suburban St Louis force, in the late 70's (damn I'm old), the response to one of the new "intakes" was that he could indeed carry any weapon he wanted, but it *would* fire only .38 special ammo.

On a suburban Detroit force in the early 80's the troops had a choice of any weapon that would fire either .38 special or the newly accepted 9mm.

Strangely enough, as a civilian with a CPL, I can carry anything from a .22 to "I-can-barely-lift-this", no caliber restrictions.

When I was a cop in Florida it seems to me that security guards were limited to 38s. Might have changed.
