My brother called it “The Alarm Clock from Hell.”

As guests, he and his wife slept in our spare bedroom one weekend not long ago - this clock was in the room. It had been my Dad's and we just put it in there for any guests - we had never used it and had not paid any attention to it. Anyway - my brother messed with it - that was his big mistake.

It woke him at midnight - eventually he found the only button that would make it stop was the snooze button - so every 10 minutes, it would wake him again. Finally out of desperation - he unplugged it. Sure enough, 10 minutes later it woke him again - yep, the battery back-up works too. So being thoroughly awake, he studied the clock and saw a small button that said cancel - he pushed it and went on to sleep.

10 minutes later, it woke him again. He studied the clock again - and noticed there was this strange marking under the cancel button that looked like you not only had to push the cancel button, but also turn the button 90 degrees CCW. So he did that. When it woke him again 10 minutes later and not having a small screw driver to get the battery out, he put the clock inside a suit case and muffled it to death - the next day, after I got a big laugh, we put the clock in the garage.

The clock is the GE Radio Alarm Clock Model 7-4837B.

By the way - it turns out that the little symbol that looks like you should turn the little cancle button (which you can't really do anyway) meant to inform you that after you push the cancel button, you should then push the Wake Button, but only when the Clock is actully alarming - any other time, it won't work.

I leanred that by doing an internet search on the damn thing.

Hi Mitch,

By any chance when you were in Bad Tolz did you pick up a Cuckoo clock? Many of the GIs did when I was in Stuttgart.

Hey Mitch,

Maybe we could start a thread on German girlfriends or wives. I was crazy about the tall blonde ones.

Yes, I bought a clock in the Royal Canadian AFB at Baden Baden. I cannot remember if was about Christmas 67 or 69. I gave that kuhner sp. to a neighbor back in 1995 or so. He built my deck for me plus wired my garage. He loved clocks. I think I paid 65 bucks for the one where the guy goes up the ladder to see the farmer's daughter, and; the pitchfork comes out with the farmer. The music was very nice. I recall you just adjusted the the weights that looked like pine combs.

I have never cared that much for material things that others appreciated more then I did.

Well now - that may be fun - you go right ahead.

But honestly - the Mädchens and Fräuleins that I remember from so long ago were great to look at, but never met one that had a personality half that of your average American Gal. Seems like their temperment was always somewhere in the single digits of the Celsius Scale!

Maybe that's why we called it the Cold War?
