Murtha Awarded the Department of the Navy ‘Distinguished Public Service Award’
March 5, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, was presented this week with the Department of the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award. The award, granted by the Secretary of the Navy, is the highest form of public service recognition bestowed by the Department of the Navy for a non-employee. It consists of a gold medal, miniature medal, lapel bar, rosette, and a certificate signed by the Secretary.
According to the Department, “nominations for this award will be limited to those extraordinary cases where individuals have demonstrated exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or as Department of the Navy as a whole.” Murtha was presented with the award in appreciation of his distinguished public service to the Department of the Navy.
“I’m proud of the service and sacrifices our troops are making, and I’m honored to receive this distinguished award from the Navy,” commented Murtha. “We have an obligation to ensure that our men and women in uniform have the most modern equipment, effective training, first-class medical care, and family advocacy resources.”
The Citation reads:
“Congressman Murtha’s selfless devotion to the Nation’s Sailors and Marines ensured they were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism. His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history. As Chairman of Subcommittee on Defense of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Murtha’s tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century. With grateful appreciation for his outstanding contributions to the Nation and the Navy and Marine Corps, Congressman Murtha is awarded the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award.”
The certificate of award is signed by Donald C. Winter, the 74th Secretary of the Navy. Secretary Winter was nominated by President George W. Bush and was sworn into office on January 3, 2006.

Ya notice no particular recognition was given the Marine Corps.

Be happy you are on that side of the ridge.....

Blatant sucking-up because of his position on the Appropriations Committee (Thumbs down DON)....only someone with a wildly distorted ego (narcissistic) would accept such an award without merit....I'm sure Mad(m)ame Pelosi will be beating on someone's door for hers very soon. It makes all previous recipients cheap.

This petition isn't going to amount to a hill of beans, not unless someone like Fox News, Rush, Glenn Beck, Bill O Reilly, Matt Drudge etc pick up on it and make it news.

Otherwise the only one that 's going to profit off of the petition and the thousands of signatures are the individuals that own www.petitiononline.com.......

If everyone on here sent it to those news outlets, then and only then could it become an issue.;)

Make some noise.

More and more lately I read post on here similar to this one. I find myself reading up to check if I am reading something in the Comedy Zone. Sadly I am not. Nothing that go's on in DC surprises me anymore.

23840, I grew up and my parents still live in Murtha's district (PA 12th). They did not vote for him. They made the point that all their friends who voted for Murtha did so because of the jobs and money he brings to the district. I dislike the concept of "pork" as much as the next guy. However, If my job depended on it and the GWOT didn't affect me personally, I might think differently.

Guys - Murtha's a senior member of Congress and if nothing was done to him after his outrageous remarks concerning the USMC in Iraq about 4 years back, ain't much gonna happen now - especially since this is just a political pat on the back from a political appointee to a Polecatus Washingtonium - probably because the USN wants a couple of those multi-billion dollar subs or such over the next term.

MOO - but the SecNav ain't gonna rescind this because of an on-line petition - and this is not gonna be as big a deal with the MSM when they've got MoveOn.Org miscreants doing the work of Barry's Great Community initiative out there picketing AIG exec's personal homes like some sort of American Hitlerjugend Krystal Nacht affair.
