In this house there are serious competitive swimmers and we all watched the Olympics this summer.
Before I say anything more the members here understand what real problems are this certainly isn't one of them.
That said, what the *#^@&! was Phelps thinking?
Records are fun to see broken but I'm seriously starting to question the worth of someone spending their entire life dedicated to a single narrow focus, which serves no greater purpose, then being considered a hero.
You all know who the real heroes are and they don't get endorsement deals.

I am sure Phelps was thinking what alot of other kids his age were thinking, a) he would never get photographed b) its only pot so it isn't that big of a deal.
In Phelps defense, I don't think he dedicated as much of his life to swimming because he was going to be lauded as a hero. The media made him a hero, he didn't do that to himself, in my opinion.
From a personal perspective, if this is the worse thing the media can pull up on this kid, I am not too worried. I know quite a few good people that smoked weed when they were kids. They didn't grow up to be drug dealers, or gang bangers, or complete dope heads. They grew up, as I am sure Phelps will do as well.
We as parents have an obligation to talk to our children and explain to them why this behavior is not acceptable, if that is what we believe. Our children should be taking cues from us, not Micheal Phelps. But on the lighter side, at least we haven't heard he isn't paying his taxes.:p

a) phelps is not a "kid", (at 17 I was carrying a rifle in defense of this nation, at 23 I was a member of Special Forces.)
b) phelps knows he's being paid big bucks because he thinks he's a "HERO".
c) phelps is now a loser and an idiot.
d) It's time for phelps to take his lumps, like a man.

Can the IOC convene a "what ever" to review this and strip him of the medals???
At the least ban him for life from all further organized competition??
This little photo-op will make he $$$$$$$$$$$ endorsements worth about the same as my opinion???

Not to sure about the IOC striping him of his medals, but if I recall, Shaun White, the snowboarder, had his medal striped from the Winter Olympics that were in Japan, after he was caught smoking up.
I think he has quit a few endorsements under his belt right now. I just don't think people care anymore.
As was stated earlier, it was the MEDIA that made/gave the title of Hero to Phelps. Yes, he should have been more cognizant of his actions and the repercussions that could/have steamed from them.
As TS stated, he needs to "Man up and take his lumps."

I'm thinking he was at a party being the center of adulation and joined in with the rest of the crowd so he could be thought of as being 'cool' and--like any of us his age--get laid. Although I did not do drugs...ceptin' my fair share of fermented flora...I'm glad we didn't have all those damn cell phone cameras, the WWW, and the like when I was a young soldier. ;)

Oh horrors!! Phelps hit the bong and is crucified while Daschle hit the IRS for $180K and is now a member of the cabinent.
I accompanied a Thai SF class on their final FTX. They had a party near the River Kwai and the USASF were invited. To maintain rapport (as per our training) we partook of cobra blood, monitor lizard and HAD to partake of the bong pipe as it was passed around. Maybe I'm doomed to hell!
Perhaps Phaps was maintaining rapport with the indigineous of USC>::munchin

No bongs...but you had to watch that crappy drink they loved so much for such occasions made out of the sour orange drink and laced with Mekong whiskey and ganja.

The broadsheet, and I use this term loosely, that broke this story estimated Mr. Phelps's 2008 advertising earnings at $5,756,400 USD (4 Mil pounds).
With that kind of income, Mr. Phelps could easily afford two body guards: one for his physical person and the other--armed with pepper spray and a Taser--for his dignity.:D

QRQ 30,
Your not doomed to hell, only here and thank you for helping me make my point.
You did your job not disrespecting the Thai SF class because of your finely tuned situational awareness. I will buy you some tie dye for this. :D
Phelps did what he did out of a complete and total lack of situational awareness or at the least with total disregard for the unique financial situation he was given by his hard earned accomplishments.
Here's what I'd write if no one was reading this. Phelps is a moron and if he showed up here at the door tomorrow, I'd kick his ass into the ditch on the other side of the road. Other than that, I hold no strong opinion.
Looks like this is probably going to blow by,, but there is one hurtle yet to jump..

www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/02/03/sheriff.phelps.marijuana/index.html
(CNN) -- A South Carolina sheriff's office is investigating whether Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps smoked marijuana on the University of South Carolina campus.
Michael Phelps is facing a criminal investigation into whether he smoked marijuana on a college campus.
Authorities will file criminal charges if the investigation determines that they are warranted, a spokesman said Tuesday.
"If someone breaks the law in Richland County, we have an obligation as law enforcement to investigate and to bring charges," Sheriff Leon Lott said in a statement.
"The Richland County Sheriff's Department is making an effort to determine if Mr. Phelps broke the law. If he did, he will be charged in the same manner as anyone else. The sheriff has a responsibility to be fair, to enforce the law and to not turn a blind eye because someone is a celebrity."
Phelps admitted "regrettable behavior" on Sunday after a British newspaper published a photograph of him smoking through a bong. The tabloid News of the World showed Phelps using the bong during what it said was a November party at the University of South Carolina, in Richland County.
Both university police and Columbia, South Carolina, police have said they could not pursue charges, according to The State newspaper in Columbia. It as unclear where the party took place, the paper said, or whether it was on the USC campus.
"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," said Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, in a statement Sunday.
"I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me," he said. "For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again."
The U.S. Olympic Committee also issued a statement that said in part, "Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the kind of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion."
In 2004, Phelps was arrested on charges of driving under he influence in Salisbury, Maryland. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months probation. He also issued an apology after that incident.
Phelps is one of 12 Olympic athletes who have signed on to "My Victory," an initiative launched last year by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency aimed at keeping competitive sports clean.

I wonder how many of us would be "squeaky clean" if we grew up in an age when everyone had a camera/phone and the internet. I have never been CAUGHT for DUI but. . . I was a rather wild youngster. A favorite movie quote comes to mind, I think from Dirty Dancing. The preacher addresses a group of angry church members and says: "Go home and sit in judgement on yourselves."
Phelps is an outstanding person who needs credit. He suffered from autism as a youth - perhaps he still does. Some autistic children became musicians and artists, I think swimming was a medium he concentrated on. Perhaps autism was an advantage giving him the ability to completely focus on.

I just hate to see anyone with this kind of talent rise up and slam the ceiling, only to crash and burn way to early in their careers..

You make a good point.
I have have never claimed to be squeaky clean but reserve the right to call out stupid behavior. This was profoundly stupid behavior.
I think the situation Phelps has is "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder" or ADHD . Autism symptoms can be linked to this.

I guess when he is on break he is really on break... off season sometimes is the only time these athletes don't have to count their caloric intake and make sure their heart rate is zoned at all times of the day. I have some experience with this. The cross country runners are the worst. During the season they run and run and run; but the night after the last race of the season they all go and black out at the bars. Soon after this they come crying that they are sick or they are just feeling horrible lately... I ask about the beer uptake and this shortly ends conversation with go get rest.
At least my view is that the grass is always greener. The fat beer drinker always wants to be the in shape dude and the in shape dude always dreams of how it would be like to be the fat beer drinker and wake up at 1500; most of the time they try it out and find out it doesn't fit other times they drop out of school....
Maybe Phelps thinks he has finally achieved something and wants to try out party side of Phelps... 5 bucks says he has a new vogue model girl friend in the next three weeks.
I still think he is a big dumb dumb... and his circumstances just make it worse.
Much ado about nothing!

I think the shame here is that we are so judgmental, perhaps because of Phelp's fame. Shucks, didn't any of you oldsters ever go under the bleachers at school for a smoke break? Read Catcher in the Rye.
Perhaps the dumbest thing Phelps did was open his mouth. With his money, a good lawyer could tear up that picture if it is the only evidence. I find it strange the picture was taken in Columbia, SC and finally published in an English tabloid two months later.
A good lesson for our youngsters is to show them that the pranks they now perform for the Internet will follow them throughout their lives.
Parents can only do their best. I have three children in their 30's. The boys are successful in their fields. The youngest, Teresa is probably the brightest but is now serving 5 years probation for 12 counts of fraudulent drug RX's. I keep wondering how I let the signs slip buy.

Sure, I went under the bleachers a number of time, but I swear that it wasn't to smoke. I have a witness who can corroborate that, but I don't think she would want her name put out on the internet.;)

I'm dismayed at the negative attitudes in these early posts. Congrats on serving you country guys. I don't think you have anything to prove to anyone on this board. Or maybe you do. Who knows.
From an 18D stand point, I'll give you this, THC, the active ingeredient in marijuana is not physically addictive. Aside from raising obesity, there are not a whole lot of long-term effects from the occasional bong hit. I don't think Phelps has to worry about that. If anything, I think this proves that taking a hit doesn't turn you into the instant, go-nowhere, do-nothing-with-your-life loser that the War on Drugs rhetoric has brought us (my generation) up to believe. If this were a legal substance, would we be having this conversation?

As a high school principal for bright (above-average to superior intelligence) LD students for 13 years, I came to understand that LD ffolkes like Michael Phelps--no matter how bright--are usually developmentally delayed (including their maturity levels and judgment) and commonly suffer from feelings of low self-esteem no matter how successful they appear to be or actually become. This makes them more vulnerable than the average bear to peer pressures and impulsive, regretful decision-making such as this one. My experiences have been that LD students are generally 3-5 years behind their peers in such developmental matters. It is not an excuse...it just is.
Additionally, many such LD people are very sincere, loyal to the extreme to their friends, and very sensitive in nature. Personally, I think he will suffer greatly from the guilt he will feel for embarrassing his mother, a junior high school principal, and from what others will say of his actions.

At last after lurking for so many years on these forums, a thread I know something about: Swimming and doing stupid things.
Competitive swimming requires huge amounts of training from the youngest years. It is not only a solitary sport, but requires that the athlete lead an extremely structured life (i.e. boring ). So, Phelps succeeded in China, made a bundle and cut loose. I say good for him. Would any of us do anything different under the circumstances?
Using dope at a party was immensely stupid. Allowing himself to be photographed was stupid. He’s going to lose endorsements and may be criminally charged. Will any of us feel sorry for him if he is criminally charged, or losses a million in endorsements? I will not. If nothing else, he should be charged with terminal stupidity.
But, will I stop admiring his accomplishments? No. Will I cheer for him in the ’12 Olympics. I absolutely will. What he’s done hasn’t made him any less of a wondrous athlete, and it hasn’t caused me to lose any respect for his athletic abilities and accomplishments. Knowing the nature of competitive swimming makes his accomplishments even more admirable.
So, if Phelps showed up at my door, I’d invite him in for dinner. I’d talk with him about his training/work ethic so my children can learn firsthand that hard work pays off. My kids would also see firsthand that stupid acts can defeat all your work and kill your dreams. I think my kids would profit from a visit with Phelps.
I also like to know his thoughts on winning a medal because the bad luck of the European swimmer who was clearly beating him, and winning a relay on the back of a teammate who swam the fastest 100m freestyle ever – ever - to drag down those arrogant Frog swimmers to win the relay. I mean, after all his years of hard work and training, he had to rely on luck and another athlete to accomplish his success. I think my kids would profit from knowing this information as well.
What Phelps did was a misdemeanor in SC. That is like a traffic ticket. You can not be extradited for a misdemeanor so unless he is even more stupid than we seem to agree, he will never come back here. OTOH as a first offense he would probably get a tap on the wrist and a fine. except they have no evidence, i.e. the contents of the pipe.:munchin

Richard Sir, very good points indeed!
There is no genius in my below post, but am going to attempt to clarify a point or two for those that are not familiar with the Learning Disabled.
First off, yes, it does exist, and yes it is a challenge for some people to learn. But after being around these truly exceptional folks as a caretaker, I have leaned a couple of things.
One is that familial and community support is a huge key in their adaptation in to society. If that support does not exist, the individual is less developed socially and emotionally.
Secondly, is that if the support given to these folks is positive, unwavering, and with a "never-quit" attitude, that anything can be acomplished..despite what is written in textbooks, or on doctors notes.
In other words, environment is key! Mr. Phelps may have had low self-esteem, and certainly possesed a poor decision making ability in this situation, but He made the choice. Now the question is, will he learn anything from it? I believe so.
Just my .02.

Michael Phelps: "Wasn't Easy" Explaining Pot Pictures to Mom
By Us Magazine February 5, 2009 6:41 AM PST
Michael Phelps admits it "definitely wasn't easy" explaining those pot pics to his mom, Debbie, a middle-school principal.
"Seeing my mom reminded me of how it was the day after I got my DUI, and I swore to myself I'd never do that again," Phelps -- who was arrested in 2004 at age 19 for DUI -- told the Baltimore Sun.
"We've been talking a lot," said Phelps, 23, adding that he's been spending the past several days with his mother and sisters. "I've been able to get back to my family. It's part of my life I need back."
Phelps continued: "It's something I am going to have to live with, and something I'll have to grow from."
"This was stupid, and I know this won't happen again," he added.
The swimmer could face criminal charges, The State newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina reported Tuesday.
A South Carolina law enforcement official said he would charge Phelps if he could prove the U.S. Olympian smoked marijuana in his county. "This case is no different than any other case," Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.
The 14-time gold medalist hit the pool Tuesday, making his first public appearance since the photos surfaced over the weekend.

I don't often post here (in fact, I believe this is my third substansive post since becoming a member), but I'm a student at USC, and it's been all the rage here, as you can imagine.
I've heard of students caught red-handed by USC PD, by Columbia City PD, and by Richland County Sheriff's Department that were released with warnings. This doesn't just apply to marijuana; probably one out of every three kids I hear of getting caught drinking get off with a warning. This guy is getting slammed purely because of who he is, not because of what he did, and it's as clear a case of media manipulation as any political fallout. The PD almost didn't have a choice in going after him, after it got plastered in every newspaper.
It ought to be remembered that we're talking about (as far as anyone knows) a clean athlete. Mr. Phelps made a very poor decision by smoking, but he didn't do anything that half this campus hasn't done. Certainly, that doesn't make it right, but in an age of athletes on steroids, blood-doping, state-sponsored forgeries and the myriad other immoral acts, I think Mr. Phelps deserves some credit for shooting a straight game in the pool.
Yes, he made a tragically bad decision. I still say that he has more moral fiber than a lot of athletes, some of whom are olympians themselves.
Sorry for the long post, and I know my opinion doesn't matter very much, but I just feel bad for the guy. The humiliation and guilt he has to be feeling are more hurtful than any dollar signs disappearing, and are very probably punishment enough.
Shucks, Spurier can't even keep his football team out of the hoosgow.:D

Here is the question, Can he re-hab his image and if so, what are the steps?
Kolbe Bryant survived.
I think he is on the way through hosesty and humility.
