Che" Guevara the coward, murderer, terrorist now has new "fans" in hollywood. Leave it to hollywood to make a movie staring a coward, murderer & terrorist.

A Washington Times interview with Benicio del Toro about Steven Soderbergh's new movie "Che," in which he plays the Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, ended with the actor storming out.
"I'm getting uncomfortable," the Times quotes del Toro, after fielding a question about the film's portrayal of the Bolivian and Cuban revolutions. "I'm done. I'm done, I hope you write whatever you want. I don't give a damn."
The Oscar winner then walked out of the D.C. restaurant in which the interview was being conducted last week.
The film is no stranger to debate and has been met with mixed reaction. The over 4-hour biopic portrays Che as a reviled figure who spread armed rebellion through Latin America.
However some have criticized the film for glossing over Guevara's stance on capital punishment, and glorifying the romantic notions of his legacy while ignoring his darker side.
"He took joy in killing counterrevolutionaries and was one of the most hard-edged, most Stalinist, pro-Soviet communists of the whole leadership," Ronald Radosh, a Hudson Institute adjunct fellow, told the Times.
Soderbergh defended the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Times reported.
"I've had people ask me: 'How can you make a movie about a murderer? A terrorist?'" he told reporters. "What they don't understand is that I'm in support of everyone who appears on screen. I have to be. I take the position of everyone who's on screen. I'm not judging them one way or another."
Guevara helped create Cuba's forced labor camps, and del Toro became agitated in the interview when the prisons were described as "concentration camps."

...More than his cruelty, megalomania or even his epic stupidity, what most distinguished Ernesto "Che" Guevara from his peers was his sniveling cowardice. One day before his death in Bolivia, Che Guevara-for the first time in his life-finally faced something properly describable as combat. So he ordered his guerrilla charges to give no quarter, to fight to their last breaths and to their last bullet. A few hours later his "untamable defiance," lack of hypocrisy and "walking of the walk" all manifested themselves. With his men doing just what he ordered (fighting and dying to the last bullet) a slightly wounded Che snuck away from the firefight and surrendered with a full clip in his pistol while whimpering to his captors: "Don't Shoot! I'm Che. I'm worth more to you alive than dead!"
His Bolivian captors begged to differ.

I saw the film, both Part One and Two. I have read a lot about Che's capture, and that is what I wanted to see the most (how Hollywood portrayed it).
Not surprisingly, I was disappointed. The film ignored Guevara's hardline Communist beliefs and instead made him look like a liberator. He justifies his actions throughout the film, especially in Bolivia, as helping the peasants. He asks, "Have you seen how you're peasants are living? Have you seen the infant mortality rate?" But his wanting to spread Communism through Latin America was never mentioned.
What I did like was a scene where the Bolivian president is having a meeting with a couple Americans about Guevara being in the country, and they make a direct reference to SF, saying "we have soldiers that can train your men in guerilla warfare, we did it in Vietnam." They also have a scene with SF soldiers training Bolivian commandos, who in the end kill Guevara after they capture him. How his capture unfolded in the movie is not how it really happened, according to history. But its Hollywood. :rolleyes:

A four hour film on Che Guevara.........not one I would have considered even hearing about.
DelToro should be running from interviews, IMHO.

Strangely, or perhaps not, after 4 years of HS and 3 more of college History, I read about Che for the first time here, on PS.com.:rolleyes:
No wonder there are those "americans" who support this type of crap movie, actors, directors etc...content to be sheep, IMHO.

Now, TS: You know that it was the Bolivians that got Che. It was coincidence that an MTT was around then.
Have not seen the movie but anything from Hollywood about a terrorist can not be good. Che was a coward and a Murderer. Good riddance......

I have seen many of our young soldiers here in Fayetteville wearing t-shirts with his face on the front, 2 of those young soldiers were SF candidates. I was very disappointed. Worse yet, when I asked one of them if he knew who that was on his tshirt.

I have had a couple of similar encounters. When I see people wearing a Che t-shirt, I ask, "Oh, so you're a Communist?" Of course I get a stark, "no!" I ask if they know what country Che died in, or what his reasons for fighting were. No response.
Its a trend of immature defiance and rebellion. They know nothing about Che or what he stood for. If they did, I doubt they would wear it.
A traitor to his class and a 1st class puta.

when I was a 1SG on Bragg, many years ago, I had a red flag with Che in the center of it on the wall behind my desk. When asked "why?"....my reply was "it's a reminder"....."Know your enemy!"

All someone has to do is read Che's Motorcycle Diaries to realize what an A-Hole he was. In his own words he is an attempted rapist, thief, liar, and braggert. It seems like he just enjoyed causing trouble. As far as the T-shirts go, I have a similar story...A couple years ago I was in a bar watching some bands play, and a guy had his shirt off and actually had a Che tattoo. I asked if he new who the guy was and he said "not really". I said you got that right if you actually got a tattoo of that MF. On another note, some band must have gotten sick of all the T-shirts because I noticed a song titled "Cli-che Guevara" scroll across the radio a few months ago. Take care. BN

The issue of Che's cult status and the use of his image as pop iconography is irritating to all of those who are educated enough to know what he was about and what he did. I find that it is especially frustrating here in a University environment where kids are wearing his image because they think it looks cool. They will freely condemn, vilify, and characterize our former President as a murderer and American despot (again because they don't know better and it is the popular thing to do to seem deep and brilliant) but will then wear paraphernalia that celebrates a man who murdered with his own hands and whose only real interest in life was rocking the boat to cause chaos, death, hate, and destruction. I apologize but it is hard sometimes being so frustrated and ashamed of the soft, trendy, and uneducated nature of my generational peers. We are truly a me generation and an uninformed one at that. Maybe next we will see kids rocking shirts with Pol Pot, or Stalin, or Franco, or maybe even someone like Himmler. Can't wait! Sometimes standing against the tide of ignorance really makes you appreciate environments where people know that the real world is often a violent place where bad people do bad things, and that sometimes our world here in the US is false but it is still up to those who know to protect those who don't want to. Hey kinda like you guys.

Anyone here remember back in 1982 the picture of che that hung on the wall just outside of 1SG Fontana's office at 3rd SF Training Company? I always wanted to ask why a commie's picture hung on the wall, but as 1SG Fontana was prone to fits of rage-filled outbursts in a thick Brooklyn accent, I thought it best to keep my ponderings to myself.

IIRC, an 8th Group guy named Major Pappy Shelton led the MTT that trained the Bolivian Rangers, and a CIA agent named Felix Rodriguez was there when Che was killed.

Funny. Do a Google and read the now declassified files.
I remember people visiting my team at Tolz, late 60's. It would go like this, Peter, I saw your dad in Brussels, your mother said hello and Sgt. Duffield and the team bulletin board. They then would go to the bulletin board and look at six or so pictures of a dead man. I never could get Duffy to acknowledge who the dead man was, but I think i know who it was..........
