GEN(Ret) Jack Keene, Former Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, told Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld:

"You and others shoud read a book called Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice
by David Galula. It's only about 100 pages, and if you don't want to read the whole hundred pages,
read the foreword, the introduction and then read chapters 4 through 7, which is really execution."

It's been mentioned here before, but if you want to learn about COIN,
add this to the read list:

Great interview, and a great read. Very interesting to hear they want to shift strategy and imbed small units within the populations for months at a time, and even get US civilians out among the Afghan people. Good luck getting the State boys out there...

Its comforting to know that Petraeus wants to use diplomacy to flush out the NWFP. 'Unilateral cross-border raids will create more blow-back than they are worth.'
