This evening I made the mistake of correcting my wife that chili with no meat in it was just "beans". Yes there were tofu chunks in it.
I think the last thing I heard was "If you don't like my cooking, go find someone else to cook for you". All I did was want to talk about chile...

Good thing there was some cured elk meat out in the shop.

Anyone else ever eat veggie chile and will admit it? :D

Chile with out some sort of meat is illegal where I come from. You could get shot if your came up and tried to pass off something with Tofu in it as Chile.

Thank you for the backup.

I understand in a few places just outside the United States, like in Texas, that for some recipes beans in chile are considered illegal too.

Tofu? Sir...please accept my deepest sympathy.

Texas. Real Chili. With meat. :D

Beans are a side dish. Real Men making Real Chili use animal protein, preferably something that had hooves on it, usually a ruminant of some kind. (Elk is pretty high class, we don't see much of that in NC!)

I did once, a black bean veggie chili. It was pretty good actually...but it was better once I added some beef to it. :D

Tofu Chile

When I clicked on this I thought it was for "The Comedy Zone"!

I fear I'm about to do a similar thing in the "Adventure Challenge" thread, though. ;) Cover me please, blade-master.

Is this a trick question???

Tofu chili is like

Possum Sashimi

Moose Quiche

Geoduck Clam Haggis

Road-Kil Bisque

Squid Huevos Ranchero

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...

In fact, there is a chili school of thought that only uses meat,, NO BEANS EVER..

Now,, I will admit that we have had a side dish of mixed beans with peppers, onions, and chili powder,, Mexican Baked Beans,, and I like it..

But Meat and Chili,, It's like Fred & Ginger,, made to be that way... :D:D

Tofu Chile? Is that some new LA splinter country of vegetarians out in the Atacama or on one of the islands somewhere in the Tierra del Fuego? No wonder the penguins are leaving! :D

As for chili--meat is mandatory, beans are optional here in Texas...but tofu? That's like saying the best salsa comes from New York City!

It is with the deepest sympathy that I offer the following insight: I was a judge for several Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) Cook-Offs. They do it right - meat and sauce only, no filler like beans. I think tofu would create an international incident. BTW, for you Texans, CASI holds it's international championship in Terlingua (?). For others, Chili's restaraunts offer Terlingua Chili and it's pretty authentic.

Once again, veggie chili is a travesty and tofu is a catastrophy. Keep that moose meat handy.

Venison and goat meat chili are popular out here in Texas, too. All veggie chili would get you hauled before a Judge Roy Bean type and an invitation to be the guest of honor at one of those famous cottonwood tree necktie party's out west of the Pecos. :)

I would commit Seppuku before I'd ever admit that.

Bill if you have hit hard times and need some "meat" let me know. I've always wanted to go to Oregon to kill something.....;)

It's not chili without "meat"and "beans"; and if your chili is made with tofu chunks in it, well, please conform to the don't ask and don't tell policy of your enlistment contract.

A few years back, my sister had me over for dinner. She had made some great spaghetti sauce. Or so I thought until I realized that she'd used tofu rather than meat. I glared at her as I put down my fork. It was one of the few occasions when I was actually bitter.

Years later, I'm still scarred by the memory.

They say that tofu takes on the taste of the rest of the dish. I say that Secretary of State designate Clinton can put on a Cate Blanchett mask, make flirtatious and witty comments with an Australian accent but she'd still be Mrs. Clinton, pants suit and all.

There's nothing wrong with vegetables. Just, when I eat a veggie, I want to know I'm eating a veggie. A carrot should look like a carrot. It's when people try to sneak veggies in undercover (like tofu, in chili) that evil has occurred. :p

Hell, that's one of the reasons I'm so happy to be living in Nevada again, rather than Cali: my pool of vegetarian/vegan friends who demand I cater to their pathological food preferences has diminished tremendously. (As well as a drastic rise in the incidence of friends with an extra freezer in the garage for various tasty animals.)

Sir--

What really gets my goat is the growing practice of using the phrase 'meatless' to describe everything from sausages, to hamburgers, to chicken breasts. Cultural double speak, I say.

I don't have any "vegetarian/vegan" friends, not in this lifetime.

I thought we were talking "chile" not "chili" Big difference! :)

My "chili" does have meat (usually HQ ground beef) and beans (usually kidney) and a rich, spice-laden, red sauce. My "chile" (no jokes from you Spanish speakers with time in Central America!) usually has NO beans of any kind, but does contain meat (usually pork chunks) and a rich, tasty "verde" sauce - though sometimes I do "colorado" (but prefer it with beef chunks)! The chile also contains other things - chilis, tater chunks, etc. depending on the mood and what is available.

There's still some left, do you want me to send it by mail or UPS? :D

Next morning after this I had some elk meat. Most folks would have cooked it first... but it still tasted just fine.

So would this be the wrong thread in which to wax rhapsodic about the joys of tofu?:D I agree with the sentiments about chili, although I make mine with beans so I am no purist.

My mother-in-law is a devout Buddhist and has been vegetarian for decades; therefore, I am familiar with dishes containing masquerading tofu. On one of our early dates, my wife took me home for an all-vegetarian meal cooked by her mom. I kept my mouth shut and dutifully ate; I may have even offered a compliment or two. As we were walking out to the car after dinner, I turned to her and enthusiastically declared, “I wanna go get a cheeseburger!” That ill-timed comment precipitated a little argument, and we found ourselves at a fork in our nascent relationship. Thankfully, we were able to arrive at a mutual understanding, and the rest is history.

I like tofu in tofu dishes, but not when it’s used as a substitute for meat in a meat dish. Before I met my wife, my only exposure to this concept was the occasional visit to temple as a kid. But, I must say, the monks have refined the art of cooking tofu. I’ve tasted certain dishes where you would be hard-pressed to know whether you are eating meat or tofu.

vsvo, We gotta talk!
Thank you for checking in here.
I've had tofu on several occasions that tastes like the best food one could ask for on this planet. Once was in China Town in San Fransisco (in a joint that that tourists dared not tread) and the other has been locally in restaurants owned and run by folks from China.
My observation is this food DOES NOT EVER belong in chilli or chile.

Mr. Harsey, I am with you on the chili. It would be an honor to dine with you one day. I will find my way out to SHOT eventually! You, TS and his fellow QP's, the ever growing PS.com membership, beer, food, guns and gear. It don't get no better!:D
